Family section of Cabell County History indicates that Thomas Cartmill and Samuel Hatton both came to BigSandy in 1790's. Says Tom's son John and "his" (John's?) son James were in Civil War. There's a James listed asAWOL in WV Archives, but claims it's probably son of John (not James Madison Cartmill). The whole clanmoved to Clinton Co. MO (including John). John was the only Cartmill surname in 1870 Wayne Co. census;didn't check for Fields, Chapman, etc.

Ratliff's book on Compton says that Thomas was son of John Cartmill and Susannah Ward; also mistakenly listsMargaret as having married James Madison, but doesn't list her having a brother by that name.

Notes for Jane Cartmill:Hatten Cem. on Lower Gragston has Jane Hatten, d/o Thomas Cartmill b. 1793 & Philip Hatten, Sr.(1790-1872), s/o Samuel & Rosanna (Queen) Hatten. Look for marriage ca. 1805. I think it could be acousin of Thomas--perhaps daughter of his uncle Thomas. The whole family is in Wayne Co. 1860,though, including the Shannons who married the Hattens. Virgil Hatton: The History or Genealogy ofthe Hatton Family insists that this Jane was Tom and Nancy's daughter, but says she was born in1788...which makes it very difficult to be correct!

Notes for Peter Van Bibber II:LDS AFN has him listed as died 7 Mar 1799 at Pt. Pleasant. Fought at Battle of Pt. Pleasant.

Per History of Greenup County, Kentucky:"The Van Bibber family came from Pennsylvania to Greenup County in the very early days, and they seem to

have been closely associated with the Boone family. Captain John Van Bibber’s wife, Chloe Staniford, was bornin Cecil County, Maryland, in 1760. They were the parents of James, Jacob, and a daughter Rhoda, who waskilled by the Indians. James married Lois Reynolds... Chloe Van Bibber, who may have been another daughterof Captain John Van Bibber, had married Jesse Boone before coming to Greenup County and they were theparents of two children, Harriet and Alphonso. A third child, Minerva, probably born in Greenup County, married Wynekoop Warner in 1817.

"Peter Van Bibber (parents not known) lived in the ‘French Grant,’ Scioto County, Ohio. He married NancyDevore in Greenup County, in 1815. James Gilruth states in his letters that Peter had four sons, Jesse, Jacob,

John and Tyce. Also that a niece, Olive Van Bibber, who lived with them married Nathan Boone, a son ofColonel Daniel Boone. This couple went to Missouri with the Daniel Boone Family in 1820. ... "

The following is taken from notes from Trans-Allegheny Pioneers and Van Bibber Family by Mrs. Miriam W.Donnolly:

"Peter Van Bibber, with his young son, Jesse, and his two brothers, John and Isaac, a Baptist minister foughtin the battle of Point Pleasant, October 10, 1774. They came with the army from Greenbrier and afterwardssettled in the Kanawha Valley, where they became the ancestors of a large and prominent family. Peterdistinguished himself for bravery in this battle so that he was promoted on the battlefield. His implements ofwarfare with which he fought so bravely are preserved in a case in historical rooms at Charleston, West Virginia.

‘"Peter’s son, Jacob, was captured by the Indians near Point Pleasant in 1789 and made prisoner. He madehis escape however, and got home about two years later. He was afterwards with General Wayne in hismemorable campaign of 1794. He and his wife died in Missouri....

"Children: Jesse (1759), Peter, Matthias (Tice) (1772), who married Margaret Gardner, Jacob (1775), whomarried (1795) Sarah Miller (1776-1843), Olive, and James, who married Jane Irvine. There may have beenother children, Joseph, Nancy, Sophronia and Ellen.’” "

Dallas Johnson says that the family came from Southwest PA to (Lawrence) KY before 1810([email protected]).

(Russell) VA Personal Property Tax 1790: James/John/Peter; 1787: John/Peter

In "Boone Family" (familytreemaker.genealogy.com), page 556, Peter and brother Isaac are said to be natives ofHolland, came to US before Revolution and settled in Botetourt Co., VA, and later in Greenbriar Co., VA. "PeterVan Bibber, who was probably the eldest of the two brothers, married Margary Bounds, and lived at the mouth ofthe Big Kanawha River. He died probably before September, 1799 (see page 127) and his widow went to livewith one of their sons in Ohio, on the Ohio River opposite the mouth of the Big Sandy [that would be Burlington.dtc]. This son was probably the eldest, Peter, Jr., as it is stated in an old record that Nathan Boone, who marriedOlive Van Bibber went to claim his bride at the mouth of the Little Sandy, 'where Mr. Peter Van Bibber thenlived.' (Draper Mss. 6 S 118-254) The father having died previously, this must have been the younger Peter VanBibber, with whom his mother and sister made their home."

Children of Peter Van Bibber and Margery Bounds are:50 i. Jacob Van Bibber, born 1775 in (Greenbrier) VA; died Bet. 1836 - 1839 in (Loutre Lick area?) MO or

Notes for Olive Van Bibber:Spraker goes on to quote a statement she says that Olive made during her lifetime. "A newspaperclipping, unnamed and undated, was sent to us, containing an account of this interesting record. Effortshave been made to locate the branch of the family in which this quaint and interesting document ispreserved, but without success. It is said to be a statement made by Mrs. Nathan Boone, recorded in thehandwriting of Mrs. John C. Boone (her daughter-in-law) and preserved in the family of L. N. Boone ofWebster Grove, Missouri. After saying that she was born the 13th of January, 1783; and grew up at themouth of the Big Kanawha River, Mrs. Nathan Boone continues:'After the death of my father, Peter Van Bibber, my mother and I lived with my brother in Ohio, on the

Ohio, opposite the mouth of the Big Sandy River. I was married on the 26th of Sept. 1799. On the first

of October, without any company but my husband, I started to Missouri, or Upper Louisiana. We hadtwo ponies and our packhorse. After being on our journey some time we were overtaken by a mand andwoman who travelled with us to Vincennes. We remained there nearly three weeks, in consequence ofgetting one of our ponies crippled. We travelled alone the remainder of the way, arriving in St. Louis thelast of October. My husband was offered eighty acres of land (in the center of what was afterwards thecity) for one of our ponies. He laughed and said he would not give one of the ponies for the whole town.We went to St. Charles County, and located about twenty miles above St. Charles. We crossed theMissouri river at St. Charles by placing our goods in a skiff. My husband rowed and I steered and heldthe horse by the bridle. It was rather a perilous trip for so young a couple. I was just sixteen, myhusband eighteen.'"

Notes for Nathan Boone:Per Hazel Atterbury Spraker: The Boone Family; Genealogical Pub. 1974, page 126-7 ref. Nathan andOlive (whom she says was born "on the banks of Greenbriar River, Ky...." and "some say she was thesister of the wife of Jesse Boone."):Nathan Boone spent his early childhood in the primitive settlements of Kentucky, and married at the age

of eighteen. In September, 1799, he assisted his father in removing the family to Missouri. DraperManuscript 6 S 18-254 gives an account of this journey as follows:'Daniel M. Boone and Nathan Boone started with their mother in the boat (called a pirogue) while Col.Boone started with the stock by land, assisted by a young man named George Buchanan and D. M.Boone's negro Sam. At Limestone (now Maysville) Nathan Boone got his marriage license and returned(75 miles) to Little Sandy, where Mr. Peter Van Bibber then lived, and Sept. 26th was married to MissOlive Van Bibber; then started out and went all the way by land via Lexington, Louisville, Vincennes, and St. Louis.'"The young couple located in St. Charles Co., Mo. In local history we find the following: 'From 1800

to 1812 he (Nathan Boone) was employed surveying Governemtn land in what are now St. Charles,Montgeomery and Warren Counties. In 1870 he with his brother Daniel surveyed a road from St.Charles to Blue Lick in Howard County, a road that is still in use. In 1820 he finished a large stone two0-story house in St. Charles County, Mo. In this house his father Daniel Boone died, September 20,1820....Nathan Boone was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1820, and was in the U. S.Army from 1832 to 1853.'"(She goes on to recount his military record in some detail, then moves on to Olive; see her notes. dtc)

vi. James Van Bibber, born May 08, 1766 in (Halifax) VA; died February 1840 in (Calloway) MO; marriedJane/Jean Irvine.

Notes for James Van Bibber:Per "Montgomery County" <http://www.genealogy.com/>, page 297, which also contains errantinformation that Peter and Isaac had come from Holland, says that James married Jane Irvine, "andsettled in St. Charles County in 1803. He was Coroner at the time William Hays was killed by his son-in-law, James Davis. In 1817 he removed to Callaway County and settled on the Auxvasse." Lists childrenas I have them, and notes "Joseph was a surveyor, and made the government surveys in range eight, westof the fifth principal meridian. Olive VanBibber married Nathan Boone." The implication here is thatOlive is James' daughter, not his sister, but I think that was not intended. dtc.

801. Christina, born Abt. 1640.

Notes for Isaacs Jacob Van Bibber:Mennonite; persecuted; came to Philadelphia 1684 (parents and children followed), then to Germantown; 1704went to Labidist community with brother Mathias, then 1705 to (Cecil) MD.

Per: History of Cecil County (MD):"Prominent among the early settlers of Bohemia Manor were two brothers, Isaac and Matthias Van Bibber.

Their father, Jacob Isaacs Van Bibber was a Hollander, and was one of the first settlers of Germantown. Hissons, the two brothers before mentioned, were natives of Holland, and were naturalized in Maryland in 1702.Previous to coming to Maryland they had been engaged in merchandizing at Philadelphia. In 1702 Mathias VanBibber bought part of john Moll, Jr.'s land, which the reader will recollect was the easternmost of the four neckswhich comprised the Labadic Tract. Two years afterwards he bought another portion of the same tract, and in1708 his brother Isaac bought 130 acres of it, which he and his wife Fronica sold to Matthias in 1711 for 150pounds, which , it is stated in the deed, had been expended in the erection of a milll then occupied by the saidIsaac. This mill was located upon a branch of the Bohemia called Mill Creek, on the site of what was formerlyknown as Sluyter's mill, every vestige of which has long since disappeared, even the land once covered by thedam now being cultivated. This is the first mill mentioned in the history of that part of the county. It was built ashort time before the date of the deed.

"Matthias Van Bibber appears to have been fond of the acquisition of the land, for in 1714 he purchased St.Augustine Manor of Ephraim Augustine Hermen for 300 pounds. This manor was directly east of BohemiaManor and was separated from it by an old cart-road, which was known then and for many years afterwards as the"Old Choptank Road." It was originally an Indian path that led from the Choptank River along the dividing ridgebetween the two bays, probably far up into Pennsylvania, but was laid out and cleared from the head of St.George's Creek to the Chester River, twelve feet wide, for a cart road, in 1682, by Casparus Hermen and HughMcGregory, who were appointed for the purpose of the court. The road had been used so little that it was thenovergrown with young timber and its location was doubtful, consequently the boundaries of the Manor wereunknown. Van Bibber claimed that the road from the head of Elk to the head of Bohemia, which ran near thehead of Back Creek, was the boundary between the two Manors. Whereupon Hermen obtained a commissionfrom the court to ascertain the eastern boundary of Bohemia Manor, and in this way to settle the dispute. Thecommissioners, who were John Dowdall, Captain Benjamin Pearce, Francis Mauldin and William Dare, met inSeptember, 1721, and after taking the testimony of several witnesses, fixed the location of the Choptank Road,

Page 38: Ancestors of Nannie Cartmellfreepages.rootsweb.com/~chafinmarsh/genealogy/cartmill/ncartmell… · 1 Ancestors of Nannie Cartmell Generation No. 1 1. Nannie Cartmell, born June 16,

38

and thus ended the dispute. The alienation fee claimed by the Proprietary of Maryland was paid when the sale ofSt. Augustine Manor was consummated, showing that it was then claiemd as part of Maryland. Matthias VanBiber also became the proprietor of Van Bibber's Forest, which was patented to him in 1720. This was a largetract of land in the Third district, near Mechanics' Valley, containing 850 acres. In addition to this he ownedanother tract, which is described in his will as his plantation at the head of Elk. It was located a short distancesoutheast of the mansion of Hon. J. A. J. Creswell. Matthias Van Bibber was for a long time chief justice of thecounty and occupied that responsible position when the court-house was built at Court House Point.

"Isaac Van Bibber's will was proved in 1723. He left three sons, Jacob, Peter and Isaac, and three daughters,Hester, Christiana and Veronica. Matthias Van Bibber's will was proved in 1739. He left four sons, Jacob,Adam, Matthias and Henry, and four daughters, Sarah, Rebecca, Christiana and Hester. He bequeathed his landat Head of Elk to his son Jacob; his dwelling plantation, which was part of the Labadie Tract, to his son Adam;Clifton, in Middle Neck, he devised to his sons Matthias and Henry, and his part of St. Augustine Manor to hisdaughters, Sarah and Rebecca.

"Henry Van Bibber, brother of Isaac and Matthias, came to Cecil County about 1720. His will, which waswritten in Utrecht, is to be found among the records of the Orphan's Court, and being a literal translation from theoriginal Dutch is probably the most curious document in the archives of the county.

"These members of the Van Bibber family ... continued to hold some of the land there as late as 1840, whenHenry Van Bibber of Virginia sold it to Robert Cochran, father of J. P. Cochran, late governor of Delaware, whoyet owns it...."

He was kept eleven months, when he escaped, and after 7 days struck the Ohio at Belleville--and happened to be a canoe on the river with several persons in it, men, womenand he hailed them telling them who he was--and though some of them knew of his captivity, at the dread of a decoy, led thewomen to be timid--yet at length, they went over, and took him to Belleville--and thence got home. He married Sarah Miller, daughter of the preceding John Miller--and moved several years after the War of 1812 to the region where the Boones lived inMissouri--probably Loutre Lick. Lived several years in Greenup Co., KY and went out from there to relief at Ft. Hays."16. "Draper Manuscript S09," quoted by Dick Walker <[email protected]> in Correspondence of Bruce Logan (LDSMicro. He became very muchattached to his Indian mother, and she to him, and where the Indians would get into a drinking spree, she would hide him bycovering bark over him till they would get sober, and danger was passed. He hid away food a little at a time till he gotenough to venture to run away--and had often sent him after horses and he succeeded so well, and they had so muchconfidence in him, they sent him again after horses, when he got his small supply of provisions, and started in the direction ofthe mouth of the Kanawha, as the Indians informed him when he had previously asked them.
