FIFTH GENERATION

16. John CARRINGTON was born in 1602 in England. He died in 1690 in Farmington, Hartford Co. Ct.. The nameCarrington is believed to have been derived from the residence of its first bearers, in Carrington, Chester County, England.It is found in Ancient English and early American records in the variant spellings of Carrynton, Carrinton, Carinton,Carynton, Carington, Carrington, and others, of which the form last mentioned is that which is most generelly used inAmerica today. Families of this name were resident at dates in English Counties of Chester, Lincoln, York, Hertford, Essex, Buckingham, Leicester, Warwick, and London. They were for the most part, of landed gentry and nobiltiy of the BritishIsles. Carrington, John b 1602 England. John Carrington, a carpenter, with his wife Joane, came to Wethersfield-HartfordCo. Ct. before 1643.

DEED: 03-08-1647 Wethersfield-Hartford Co. Ct. It was orig. Edward Vere’s lot, boarded north by highway, east by acommon, south by a swamp, west by a swamp. Later 2 1/2 acres was sold to widow of Leonard Chester, resided next doorwest of Robert Francis on Sandy Lane. In 1652 John Carrington sold 1/2 acre of land with a cellar on it to Samuel Martin.In 1649 the town gave him a home lot of 30 rods.

They had a homestead on Sandy Lane, near the corner of Fort St. Carrington was probably a somewhat lawless man, for in1650 he had been fined 10 Lbs for “barting a gun with an Indian.”. In March, 1651, he and his wife were indicted seperatlyfor witchcraft, the charge was in the usual form, that, “Thou hast entertained familiarith with Sathan, the greate enemy ofGod and mankinde; and by his helpe thou has done workes above the course of nature; for which, both according to thelawe of God and the lawe of this Common wealth, thou deservest to die.” The unfortunate culprits were convicted; and thehusband certainly, and the wife, probably executed. The Court, administering upon Carrington’s estate, directed that theinventory thereof be filed, but not recorded. A John Carrington emigrated from England to America in 1635 with his wifeMary______ both 33 years of age and settled first at Wetherfield-Hartford Co. Ct. Some historians believe that he wasidentical with that of John Carrington who settled at Farmington and then at Waterbury, New Haven Co., Ct., where he diedin 1690, but it is more probable that this John of Farmington, Hartford Co., Ct. and Waterbury, Newhaven Co, Conn. wasthe son of the immigrant John Carrington who came from England to America in 1635 with his wife Mary________. Onewriter states that John of Farmington and Waterbury had brothers named as follows: Ebenezer. Samuel and EzekielCarrington.

The material continues as follows: John Carrington was an early settler in Farmington, and one of the “eighty-four propri-etors” in 1672. He signed the articles for the settlement of Mattatuck, Waterbury, in 1674 and appears to have joined thenew plantation early; for he is named in all the divions of fences. It appears that for some cause he did not fully complywith the conditions of the new plantation covenant asd was consequently declared to have forfieted his rights, Feb. 6, 1682.But little is known of him. He moved to Waterbury in early 1690. He died in the early part of 1690, leaving a widow whodied before the inventory of his effects was rendered, June 30 1690. John Carrington’s house lot of two acres was on WestMain St., at the south side, about where Lavenworth Street now runs. It was bounded north and south on the highway, easton timothy stanley, west on George Scott. It was sold in 1710 by the heirs to Timothy Stanley and George Scott.

To take care of portions and not be overruled by John Carrington the administrator. 03-03-1691: Dist to Eldest Son L23, to the rest of the children, to each L12.

CARRINGTON

This family is one of great antiguity. Sir Michael Carrington, who was a standard bearer to Richard I., 1189 is the first ofwhom I find any record. His grandson Sir William Carrington was an officer under Edward I., 1272-1307 Sir EdmundCarrington, Kt, was an officer under Edward II., 1307-27. Sir William Carrington, Kt. Temp. of Edward III 1327-77 SirThomas Carrington, Kt., Steward (of the household) to Edward III, was the father of John Carrington who in the beginningof the reign of Henry IV for his adherence to Richard II (who was deposed) was compelled to flee from his country and onreturning assumed for disquise the name of Smith. He died in 1446 and was the father of Hugh (Carrington) Smith, whoappears to have been the father of (1445-1500) Sir John Carrington Smith, Baron of the Exchequer, temp. Henry VIII.,whose fourth son (1509-47) Francis (Carrington) Smith of Ashely Tolville, Leicester, was the great grandfather of Charles(Carrington) Smith, who was created Oct. 31 1643, Lord C——, Baron of “Wotton Warren” in Warwickshire, 4th of Nov.following Viscount Carrington in the Peerage of Ireland, was murdered by his valet at Pontoise in France, Feb 21, 1664 andwas succeeded by Francis Carrington Smith, 2d Baron and Viscount. He died in 1705. Charles his son died young in may1706. The title and honor thus became extinct.

He was married to Lucinda FOX on Jun 20 1866 in Franklin, Delaware Co. N.Y.. Lucinda FOX was born in 1797. Shedied in 1877. She was buried in Del Co.NY-Ouleout Cem. Franklin, N.Y.. 2nd wife of Jeremiah Carrington-Married June20 1866-Wayne Carrington of Oneonta, New York indicates that Lucinda Fox was “Indian” ( Native American ) and therewere no children in this marriage.During a visit to The Oueleout Cemetery in November 1993, and a visit to the Cemetery in Meridith, where Jeremiah’sMother is buried, a small cemetery located a few miles down the road from the Oueleout and on the same side was visited.It disclosed that there were several persons by the name of Fox buried there.Lucinda Fox was 69 years old when she married Jeremiah Carrington and the name Fox may have been from her 1stmarriage.

SECOND GENERATION

2. Jeremiah Wheaton CARRINGTON was born on Aug 12 1824 in Delaware Co. N.Y. Near Ouleout&. He was buried in1915 in Susquehanna, Pa. Grand St. Cem.. He died in Apr 1915 in Susquehanna, Pa. J. W. Carrington Established Farm inSusquehanna County. Jeremiah Wheaton Carrington (1824-1915) was born near Franklin N.Y. in Delaware County. Hecame to the Susquehanna, Pennsylvania area sometime in the early 1850’s and purchased property on what is know knownas the “Brushville Road”. He was a carpenter by trade and here he built his home and he and his wife raised a family of sixchildren: Eugenia, Melvina, Eva, Cora, Delos and Leslie. Over the years, large barns were built and the house enlarged tobecome a very attractive two family dwelling.

Jeremiah’s sons, Delos E. and Leslie eventually took over the farm. They formed a partnership in a venture which becamequite a prosperous truck garden business known as Carrington Brothers. They supplied garden produce to the local storesand residents and were well known in the area for their strawberries. They also maintained large hot beds where plantswere grown for their own use and for sale. Upon the retirement of Leslie Carrington, Delos Carrington continued thebusiness with his son J. Delos (Lossie). Leslie Carrington built a fine residence on Riverside Drive in Susquehanna, Pa. andmade his home there.

After the death of Delos Carrington in 1931, his son (Lossie) continued to operate the farm. In the early 1940’s he sold theproperty to George and Muriel Washburn Wanatt. Today, most of the barns and out buildings are gone, but the house stillstands. Though somewhat altered in appearance from the original building, it is well maintained by members of the Wanattfamily who still own and reside on the property. 2/94 J.G.S.

pg. 459, 24 september 1850 Meridith lists a Catherine Warner 18 at school. This may be the Catherine Warner whomarried Jeremiah W. Carrington. Jeremiah Carrington Monument in Grand St. Cemetery gives the following: CatherineWife of J.W. Carrington died July 3, 1878 aged 46 years (Months hard to read) and 22 days. 1878-46 =1832 Same year ofbirth as Catherine Warner above: 1850 Census, less 18 years =1832 year of Birth. Jeremiah W. Carrington and his wife(Catherine Warner) - their 1st Child Eugenia was born in Delaware Co. in the year 1854 Jeremiah WheatonCARRINGTON and Catherine WARNER had the following children:
