Sri Kanchi Maha Periva Thiruvadigal Saranam

    INTRODUCTION

Hari Om! Namaskaram from the Kanchi Periva Forum community.

We are very happy to continue this special ebook series, a huge treasure this one, on Experiences with Sri Maha

Periva. Yes, this is one of the wonderful best-sellers in Tamil titled “Anbe Arule” authored by a great writer – Sri

Baraneedharan. More than just being an acclaimed, prolific writer, he is an extremely humble human being and

is an ardent devotee of Sri Maha Periva. He has a lot of books and articles to his credit  – almost everyone is a

jewel but the ones that outshine others are his travel accounts (பயணகடரகள & அணசல

மகரம). It is a matter of great pride and satisfaction for us that this title is getting translated and published

    through this Satsang.

Again, the translator (and mostly the illustrator too) of the series is a well-known, highly respected moderatorof our Forum – Sri Narayanan Bala (known as anusham163 in our Forum), someone who has dedicated his life

to thoughts about Periva and working on something related to Periva all the time – be it drawing, translation of

articles, new writing, sketching or a wonderful painting. He is so abundantly blessed by Periva’s Divine Grace

and it shows in every step that he takes on any of these fronts. For this particular series, Sri Narayanan Bala has

taken lot of pains to conceive the idea, secured permission for translation personally from Sri Baraneedharan

and has put in so much of effort to get this treasure to all the Periva devotees at large. Our sincere thanks and

namaskarams to both Sri Baraneedharan and Sri Narayanan Bala for this outstanding effort.

When we decided to launch this series, we were looking for an appropriate time to commence and it struck us

that the “Pratamai thithi” certainly deserves a special place for us as our Periva’s avatar on earth was on a

Krishna Paksha Pratamai. Like Sri Krishna Ashtami and Sri Rama Navami, Sri Periva Pratamai should become one

of the celebrated thithis in the future, and with such a desire, we decided to launch this as a regular series to

    be published on Pratamai.

We published the First Chapter of this series on Krishna Paksha Pratamai and on the day of Gayatri Japam – 30

Aug, 2015. Chapter 5 of this series is being published on 28th October 2015, Krishna Paksha Pratamai thithi.

We humbly submit this e-book edition at the lotus feet of Sri Maha Periva. Though this book is for restricted

circulation among like - minded members of the society, this is a free publication which can be downloaded

from http://www.periva.proboards.com/. Feedback may be sent at [email protected]

    TRANSLATOR’S NOTE

Om Sri Gurubhyo Namah! Sri Maha Periva Thiruvadigal Charanam

Mr.Baraneedharan's book, 'Anbe Arule..' was the turning

point in my life, which moved me towards Maha Periva'

After this only I started reading all the books by Sr

Ra.Ganapathy and Deivathin Kural. I also showed my first

ten oil paintings of Maha Periva to him who encouraged

me and blessed me by saying, "you will do 108 paintingsof Periva".

I submitted all these ten paintings to SriMatam. Later he

asked me to paint portraits of Sri Seshadri swamikal, Sri Ramanar and Sri MahaPeriva (I

quote him " these three Mahans were contemporaries; I want to display them in the Sr

Seshadhri swamikal maemorial in Chinna Kancheepuram on Sri Seshadhri Swamikal's

    Jayanthi day.")

I did them and they were hung on the walls there on His Jayanthi day as planned. He

blessed me there with the 'Pattu Angavasthram' with which Sri Seshadri Swamikal's photo

was decorated during the homam and puja. Memorable day for me.

Because of his blessings only, I have completed 69 portraits and I am sure I will be able

to complete 108 with his and MahaPeriva's anugraham.

I welcome your feedback on this compilation. I can be reached on [email protected]

    ANBE ARULE – CHAPTER 5

The prize money of Rs.1000/--, which I received from Sahithya Academy for the translation

of the novel ‘The Guide’ by R.K.Narayan to Tamil, was instrumental in giving me a new

    experience.

Swamikal was camping in Chennai at that time. I wanted to submit a small portion of

the ‘ big money’, which I earned for the first time from my job as a writer, to Swamikal.

I decided to give Rs 101, along with a flower garland as my offering, to Swamikal on the

day of His birthstar, Anusham. I had not gone for Dharshan of Swamikal, with flower,

fruits, or flower garland until then.

I converted Rs. 101 to coins. I bought a jasmine flower garland, closely set with flowers,

for Rs. 10,(big value at that time).

Next day was Swamikal’s birthstar. I was planning to offer the money along with flower

garland during the early morning Viswaroopa Dharshan.

Swamikal had retreated to His rest room, after night pooja and after giving Dharshan

to devotees. Doors were also shut. The time was around 10.P.M.

There was a Pavizha malli tree, opposite to that room, at a distance of 20 feet, . I wentand sat under the tree. In front of me, there were 101 silver coins along with the

aromatic jasmine flower garland in a bamboo basket. I was determined to sit there

    without sleep.

I subjected myself to a test of my devotion by making the following decisions in my

    mind:

---I should be awake and ready to meet Periyava, whenever He woke up, whatever be

    the time 2.30.A.M. or 3.00 or 4.00.A.M.

---Mine should be the first flower garland to be offered. If, Periyavah accepted my garland

first, when He woke up, I would consider my devotion to be true and pure, and His

Anugraham to be full and complete.

I did not realize that by undergoing such a severe test, how much I would be

disheartened, when what I wished did not happen. I immersed myself in the Maha

Mantra, ‘Hara Hara Sankara---Jaya Jaya Sankara’.

Whenever I heard even a small sound, I would rush with the bamboo plate to the rest

room thinking that Swamikal had woken up. As the door did not open, I would returnto the place where I was sitting.

Crows and small birds started tweeting and chirping here and there. The time might

have been around 4.A.M. A few flowers, fully blossomed with sweet scent from the

Pavizha Malli tree fell on me.

At that time, one lady (sumangali) came and stood near the door which I was keenly

watching, like a snake. She used to come regularly for Viswaroopa dharshan . She was

one of the ladies, who would perform Aarthi with camphor, singing with shivering voice

After her, two or three ladies also came with plates full of flowers and some pieces of

camphor. Soon after, came two more ladies having some flowers and loudly chanting

Mangala Slokas, and stood in front of the door, and covered the door from my view.

I started losing hope slowly. The thought that I would not be able to present the flower

garland as the day’s first offering, disturbed me. How can I reach Swamikal and have

Dharshan overtaking these ladies, which I am not used to ?

I felt upset. Although I was awake throughout the night, I would not be the first. Had

I failed in the test? I became agitated.

I stood behind those ladies and waited patiently, thinking that everything would happen

    as it was destined to.

The door opened. Swamikal, appeared with His holy face, bright and radiating Tejas

without any symptom of tiredness from sleep. His holy body shone in the light ofcamphor. In the midst of the feeling of bliss, the thought of my ‘Sankalpa’ ( test) was

echoing at the bottom of my heart.

Next minute, Swamikal’s right hand came near the jasmine flower garland I was holding

, like the trunk of the elephant faced Ganesha.. Thrilled as I was, I moved one foot

    nearer.

Achaaryar, took the garland and accepted it, a smile playing in the corner of His mouth

Observing this scene with surprise, those ladies turned to see who was standing behind

Due to this mild stir, I got some maneuvering space. I jumped forward and submitted

the silver coins at the Holy feet and prostrated at His feet with moist eyes.

I got another experience on another of His birthstars.

Swamikal was camping in a nice Ashrama, located near a temple pond in a small town

called Karwate Nagar, on way from Puthoor to chittoor.

This time also I went to Karwate nagar the previous night of Star Anusham, with two

of my friends. During the time of Dharshan, I submitted Rs. 100/- to Swamikal saying

‘Periyavah should add this small amount to the  expenses of Birth star” and kept the

money humbly on a wooden plate’.

    Periyavah thought for a minute.

‘How did you come’? --- He asked.

    ‘By car’. --- I replied.

‘Have you got a driver’?--- He asked.

    ‘Yes’. --- I said.

He said, ‘Give this Rs.100/-to the driver, and ask him to go buy curds and bring. I wil

send a boy with him to accompany him. You people need not go, stay here’.

Driver Pazhani was very much excited and happy, when he came to know of the matter

He had unbounded devotion towards Periyavah. He was overwhelmed that Swamika

had entrusted him with this job. He started with some vessels, accompanied by the

    boy.

We three were commenting and discussing various reasons, for buying curd for Rs

    100/- and spending the time.

The Car returned at 10 P.M. without curd. When queried, Pazhani said:

“ Curd was not available in Puthoor. When asked, they said curd would be available only

5 or 10 measures. I said ‘no’ and returned. They said that I would get plenty of curds

at Tiruppathi. Shall I go and come?”

    “Can you?”

‘’Periyava  has ordained, so I have to buy from wherever it is available. There is no

question of whether I can. If Periyava says something, it is done.’’—Saying this, Pazhani

started for Tiruppathi after getting money for petrol and other expenses.

I got up two or three times (to see if he had come back). The car had not returned

When I last saw, the time was 3.30.A.M, and he had not come then. At last Pazhan

came around 4.30.A.M with curds for Rs.100/.

When I went for Viswaroopa Dharsanam, I narrated the whole story of how Pazhan

went all the way to Tirupathi and brought the curds. Periava was happy.

He said, “Do you know what this curds is for ? Today, a lot of people will come here

for Dharsanam; I will ask only rice to be cooked; mix this curds with the rice, add

chillies, mango and ginger; then distribute the curd rice to all those who come, with

    your own hands.

It will be so cool and soothing during this hot weather; let everyone eat to his heart’s

content…”.( At that time, only Swamikal was staying in Karvate nagar. Sri Jayendra

Saraswathu Swamikal had been camping in another town, with the Puja.).

As ordained by Swamikal, rice was cooked in many big vessels and curd rice was

prepared. In the hot sun, a lot of people had come from neighbouring places for

Dharsan. I, along with the two friends who had come with me and some more persons,

distributed it to all those people, from about 1 P.M.

We went to Periava at 4 P.M, to take leave.

“Did all the people eat to their hearts’ content ?”------He asked.

    “Yes, they did..”

“In such a place as this where there are no facilities, and in this warm weather of

Vaikasi month, the curd rice which you made for Rs.100/-- and distributed would have

been like nectar for them, and you would have also been fully satisfied, is it not?”

    “Periava Anugraham…”

“How many of you have come in the car ?”-----He enquired.

    “Three persons..”
