Convocation of Thanks
The tree on the cover image contains the fingerprints of the students comprising the Surgical First Assistant, Physical Therapy, and Medical School programs. After today’s Convocation, the original piece will be displayed outside the Donor Program office as a tribute honoring the donors who have left a unique and lasting imprint on each student as they prepare for their clinical careers.

On behalf of the students and faculty of the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences, thank you for attending the 2018 Convocation of Thanks. We welcome you in the hope that you will feel the immense gratitude and respect we have for both your loved ones and for you, their gracious families and friends.
Our theme this year, “A Lasting Imprint,” strives to capture the enduring influence and essential foundation that your loved ones have imparted to us through their selfless gift. Your loved ones’ journeys intersect with your lives in profound and unique ways and we students have been deeply impacted by the brief time we have spent learning from them. They are our first patients—patients who have trained and informed us, whose gift will serve as the foundation of our understanding and intervention on behalf of countless future patients.
Whatever distance you travelled to be here, however long it has been since you have said goodbye, your presence today is a powerful testament to the lasting imprint of your loved ones. Thank you for celebrating with us. We hope that in sharing this service together, you are encouraged, honored, and in some small way, a little more healed.

“The legacy of your loved ones will carry on with every patient we treat...I learned about my donor in the most intimate ways, he mentored me, challenged me, and encouraged me to be better. His lessons will follow me for the entirety of my career. Your loved ones believed in something bigger than themselves and I hope you can find solace in knowing that on the other side of your heartbreak an abundance of wisdom has been found.” – Kathleen Michaels
“What we can be taught by others is extraordinary and touching. What an incredible gift I have received!” – Sarah Kroska
“I may have never met these people while they were living, but they have taught me valuable knowledge in a way that no professor ever could.” – Michael Wilshusen
“The time I spent with my donor challenged and deepened my anatomical knowledge a thousand times over, but it also provided important occasions to consider what it means to leave a selfless legacy. The gift of these donors has in the highest order demonstrated generosity, compassion, and belief in the next generation of healthcare providers. They have foundationally influenced every patient interaction I will have--by both equipping my professional competency and preparing my hands and heart for the very human task of healing.” – Ellen Larkin
Sleeping in the Forest
I thought the earth remembered me,
she took me back so tenderly,
arranging her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds.
I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed,
nothing between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths
among the branches of the perfect trees.
All night I heard the small kingdoms
breathing around me, the insects,
and the birds who do their work in the darkness.
All night I rose and fell, as if in water,
grappling with a luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better.

“At the close of a man’s life, to estimate his worth it is
wise to see him in relation to his life surroundings, to
know not only the part he played as an individual, but
also as a component part of the great events to which he
contributed in the betterment of mankind.”
