DOES THE 21ST CENTURY BELONG TO CHINA?The Munk Debate on ChinaKISSINGER AND ZAKARIA VS. FERGUSON AND LI
Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and CNN’s Fareed Zakaria go head to head with leading international historian Niall Ferguson and renowed economist David Daokui Li on the key geopolitical issue of the century: the rise of China.
Is China’s rise unstoppable? Powered by the human capital of 1.3 billion citizens, the latest technological advances, and a com-paratively efficient system of state-directed capitalism, China seems poised to become the global superpower this century. But the Mid-dle Kingdom also faces a series of challenges. From energy scarcity to environmental degra-dation to political unrest and growing global security burdens, a host of factors could derail China’s global ascent.
In this edition of The Munk Debates — Canada’s premier international debate series — former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kiss-inger and CNN’s Fareed Zakaria square off against leading historian Niall Ferguson and world-renowned economist David Daokui Li to debate the biggest geopolitical issue of our time: Does the 21st century belong to China?
Highly electrifying and thoroughly engross-ing, the Munk Debate on China is the first for-mal public debate Dr. Kissinger has participated in on China’s future, and includes interviews with all four of these leading thinkers.

MIDSUMMER NIGHT IN THE WORKHOUSEDIANA ATHILL
“[Diana Athill] ranks among the very best writers of the late twentieth century.” — The Times
“I can remember in detail being hit by my first story one January morning in 1958.” So begins literary legend Diana Athill in the preface to Midsummer Night in the Workhouse, a long-overdue collection of her short fic-tion, originally published in the 1950s to the 1970s.
In unsentimental though often touching prose, Athill’s young women anticipate, enjoy, or just miss out on brief sexual encounters with men met on trains, at parties — just about anywhere they can. A cheating wife, back with her boring husband, is wracked with agonizing love for the unavailable partner of her brief fling; a writer seeks inspiration at a writers’ retreat whilst avoiding the group seducer’s invitation; a wife’s party flirtations propel her possessive husband into another woman’s bed; a teenager experiences enraptured detachment during her first kiss.
Beautifully written, touching, and funny, Midsummer Night in the Workhouse is Diana Athill at her best.
DIANA ATHILL was born in 1917. Her distinguished career as an editor at André Deutsch Limited is the sub-ject of her acclaimed memoir Stet. She is the author of five other volumes of memoirs, Instead of a Letter, After a Funeral, Yesterday Morning, Make Believe, Somewhere Towards the End (winner of the Costa Biography Award), and a novel, Don’t Look at Me Like That. Her short fic-tion was first published between the 1950s to the 1970s in Observer, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour, and Gentleman’s Quarterly. In January 2009 she was awarded an OBE. She lives in London, U.K.

Granta has long beenknownforthequalityofits travelwriting.The1980swere theculminationof agolden age, when writers including Paul Theroux andBruce Chatwin, James HamiltonPaterson, and JamesFenton set out to document life in largely unfamiliarterritory, bringing back tales of the beautiful, the extraordinaryandtheunexpected.Bythemid1990s,travelwriting seemed to change, as a younger generation ofwriterswhoappearedinthemagazinemadejourneysformorecomplexandoftenpersonalreasons.DeccaAitkenheadreportedonsex tourism inThailandandWendellSteavenson moved to Iraq as foreign correspondent.Whatallthesepieceshaveincommonisasenseofengagement with the places they describe, and a belief thatwhetherweareinBirminghamorBelarus, thereisalwayssomethingnewtobediscovered.
