Present day situation

“The Palace”, home now to “Ananda – in the Himalayas” as we look down into the Doon valley from its majestic height of 3500 feet for over 100 years. Crowning a picturesque ridge of the mighty Himalayan ranges, the palace is a symbol of the grandeur and splendour of an era gone by. Original relief work still adorns the palace walls and two magnificent World War I cannons flank the royal gateway.

The Viceregal Palace

Built in 1910 with the idea of hosting the guests of the Royal family, the Palace consists of a very inviting reception hall, which gives more of a residential feel to it as compared to the usual reception counters in most hotels. After the traditional welcome guests are escorted to their room in an electric cart. Next to the reception hall, is the magnificently restored palace sitting room. The room has two original fireplaces, a 14 feet high ceiling made of 19th century stamped and pressed copper, enhanced with Venetian crystal chandeliers. The walls are adorned with photographs of royalty, including kings, queens, and viceroys who visited the Palace for a peaceful retreat and offer their ‘salaams’ to the Maharaja.

The Viceregal Hall

The staircase to the lower-ground floor leads to the erstwhile Maharaja’s personal game room – Viceregal Hall. The hall is an ideal area for conferences and meetings. The venue is also suitable for the staging of various art performances due to its good natural acoustics that can raise and resonate the human voice to spiritual heights.

The Viceregal Palace - Ground floor facilities

On the ground floor of the Palace, adjacent to the Lobby, is the Maharaja’s Library, which shelves over 1000 rare books on ancient medicinal sciences from the Maharaja’s personal collection. Opposite the Library, is the Billiards Room housing a 150-year-old original hand-carved billiards table and the Maharaja’s original cues. Next door is a board / conference room with seating capacity for 14 persons.

The Viceregal Suite

A grand staircase with hand carved Burma teak banisters and newel posts gracefully lead the way to the magnificent Viceregal Suite covering 3000 sq. ft. With breathtaking view of the Himalayas, Rishikesh valley and the Ganges, the suite has fully marbled bathrooms and three fireplaces, including one in the bathroom. One of the rare features of this suite is its private terrace of about 2000 sq. ft., with its private Jacuzzi bath overlooking the valley, the Ganges and the gardens of the Palace. A special private elevator has been provided for the personal use of the Palace Suite and the Private Dining room on the roof.

Hi tea loungeLocated in the Viceregal Palace, it is a warm, romantic setting for an afternoon cup of tea and light snacks.

Palace Lawns

An open air expansive lawn encircled by a jogging track 600 meters long, with a majestic marble floor shelter in the shape of a fortress donning a gold leaf fresco ceiling and surrounded by a still and peaceful water pool like a moat around it , at the southern end. This is referred to as the Music pavilion.
