In fünf

rung, denn in fernen Ländern herr-schen andere Standards.

Innovative strength is the trademark of companies that manufacture analy-sis and laboratory equipment. The industry’s user markets appreciate that because demand for new analysis instruments is higher than ever. For example, food inspectors don’t just have to detect hazardous materials. They also have to distinguish between horsemeat and pork just as reliably as they do between natural and synthetic flavors.
Biogenetics and genetic analysis At this year’s analytica, the bio-analy-sis sector will surprise visitors with instruments that take an even closer look at biosamples. Besides high-

than 1,100 exhibitors will present their latest developments for labora-
tory technology, analysis and biotechnology in five halls. A look at the

resolution microscopes from industry giants such as Olympus, Leica, Nikon and Carl Zeiss, Horiba Jobin Yvon’s Raman spectroscope is particularly convincing. It measures molecular compositions and produces two- or three-dimensional images of cells and tissue. Bio-imaging is not the only sector in which the range of methods is expanding. Genetic analysis includ-ing polymerase chain reactions could soon be conducted differently. The start-up GNA Biosolutions is present-ing ultra-fast DNA detection at ana-lytica: Nanoparticles that heat up by laser-beam irradiation are supposed to replace conventional thermal cyclers. No one can really say whether the idea

will catch on. The best place to find young entrepreneurs at analytica is the InnovationArea and at the “Made in Germany” joint exhibits in Hall A3 and B2. Ongoing development of the exist-ing sector for instrumental analysis is also having a positive impact on the life sciences. Mass spectrometers like the Orbitrap, multidimensional chro-matography techniques and alterna-tive separating methods such as the relatively new field-flow fractionation are driving research related to pro-teomics and metabolomics. Mass-spectrometry shotgun techniques like the ones that start-up company Lipo-type is presenting are especially interesting for lipid scientists.
Food analysis: Automation continues to growThe sector for food inspection is ben-efiting from advances in bio-analysis. Is there genetic soy in your chocolate bar? Does your expensive mozzarella really contain buffalo milk? Modern DNA analysis can answer questions such as these. It can also be used to reliably detect animal and plant aller-gens. BIOTECON Diagnostics is simpli-fying DNA detection in food with aller-gen kits and a laboratory robot that automates analysis including sample preparation. The level of automation in conventional instrumental food analy-sis has also increased significantly. Bruker now offers an auto-sampler for the NMA spectrometer minispec, which detects fats and moisture in food. Axel Semrau has automated the detection of sterols in olive oil, and Joint Analyti-cal Systems is simplifying pesticide analysis with automatic matrix separa-tion.
Plastics analysis: Testing items in large quantities Analyzing plastics is no less complex that bio-analysis and food analysis. Besides the actual polymer, flame-retardants, stabilizers, pigments and a
number of other additives must also be analyzed. In this case, the bench-top NMR system for quality control being presented by LOT-QuantumDesign is also helpful. Thanks to simplified sample preparation, it speeds up the analysis of plasticizers in PVC, oils in polystyrene and many other substanc-es. In industrial manufacturing, large article quantities are a challenge to analysts. If possible, product defects should be identified during ongoing production to correct the process as early as possible. The solution: Devices for online measurement like the spec-tral photometer from ColorLite. They check the colors of plastic films di-rectly in the production line.
Material researchers will also get their money’s worth at analytica. One clever example: An analysis centrifuge from LUM determines adhesive forces and strength properties of composite materials and other plastic parts. When the materials break due to increasing centrifugal force, fracture times and rotational speeds are trans-mitted to a PC. Based on that, special software computes their respective breaking strengths.
Making routine laboratory tasks easier and safer Visitors will find out more about the hot topics of bio-analysis/genetic analysis, food analysis and plastics analysis in actual practice in our daily Live Labs. In addition, leading suppli-ers of laboratory information and laboratory management systems will present their tools. analytica 2014 will also examine a topic with interdisci-plinary relevance in a special show on Occupation Safety/Health and Safety in the Workplace. And those who are on the lookout for more than just high-end analysis equipment will discover a number of practical little things that make routine laboratory tasks easi-er—i.e. shatter-proof glass bulbs and much more. l

3 Occupational safety
New at analytica: All about safety in the laboratory
For the first time ever, analytica 2014 will focus on the topics of
occupational safety and health and safety in the workplace. A special
show in the Live Lab in Hall A3 will inform visitors how they can protect
themselves from dangerous situations that come up on a daily basis.
It’s a common situation in routine laboratory work: One must be very careful when handling chemicals. Even when storing chemicals, mistakes can have disastrous consequences. Since the topic of safety is so important and concerns everyone, visitors at this year’s analytica will experience a special premiere. Everything that pertains to occupational safety and health and safety in the workplace will be featured in a special show with experiments as part of the Live Labs in Hall A3.
Dealing with hazards correctlyOn each day of the fair, experts will show how dangerous situations can come up in the laboratory and how people can protect themselves. It starts every day at 12:00 with a pre-sentation on “Fires and Explosions” by asecos. In an approximately two-hour live demonstration, visitors will find out how to safely store and handle flammable materials. They will find out about material properties and their risks. After all, sometimes all it takes is a single spark to trigger an uncontrol-lable chain reaction. Audience mem-bers will find out how to properly react and what protective measures one should take when dealing with hazard-ous materials.
International visitors can attend the same presentation in English each day at 14:00.
Presentation highlights: Live experiments with “mini explosions”To illustrate how dangerous these situations can become, employees from asecos will conduct a number of exciting experiments using typical laboratory chemicals. The program of events calls for dust explosions, exothermic reactions, small controlled fires and deflagrations. For example, a balloon filled with hydrogen 3.0 will be ignited with an open flame. Other experiments will demonstrate how to determine an explosion limit and the flame point behavior of benzene.
Protecting health on a daily basis Anyone who deals with chemicals on a daily basis should not only protect themselves from hazards, but should also think about their health. Another presentation that is part of the special show in Hall A3 shows which health measures in the laboratory can help to protect laboratory workers. Every day at 16:00, laboratory-chemicals spe-cialists from Bernd Kraft will be on hand to pass on valuable safety-relat-ed information. In a presentation titled “Safe Handling of Hazardous Substanc-es/Avoiding Health Risks through the EMKG and PPE,” they will use practical examples to explain how laboratories can organize themselves better. l

an Bioanalytiker.

Auch in der Session „Sensors with and for Nano-
Per Schwarze vom Norwegi-an Institute of Public Health in Oslo

4 analytica Conference
Talking Science: Analysis is changing The analytica Conference on the first three days of the fair is the
scientific highlight of analytica. Renowned experts from around the
world will report on the latest developments in the analysis sector in
more than twenty half- and full-day symposia. They run the gamut
from research to applications.
From identifying aerosols to analyzing flavors in wine: The analytica Confer-ence gives participants information about the entire range of new analysis techniques in chemistry and the life sciences including diagnostics. Topics include the latest developments in chromatography and spectroscopy as well as modern imaging techniques and chemometrics, including statisti-cal and mathematical methods for evaluating data. Several sessions on proteomics, lipidomics and metabolo-
mics specifically address bio-analysts. In diagnostics, one of the conference’s focal points will be on autoantibodies directed at G protein-coupled recep-tors and cardio-pulmonary diseases. The symposium on drug testing will be particularly interesting for all clinical and forensic analysts. It will focus on detecting pharmaceuticals and drugs in fingernails and other unusual sam-ples. And anyone who always wanted to know how and why our internal clocks tick should be sure to attend the

session on “Biological Timekeeping by Circadian Clocks”.
New sensors for bio-analysisThe analytica Conference focuses on genetic analysis and bio-analysis. Thanks to new analysis methods, bio-analysts are entering dimensions that appeared unattainable just a few years ago. In a symposium on the “Limits and Scales in Analytical Sci-ences” on the morning of Wednesday, April 2, Kannan Balasubramanian from the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart will explain how to detect attomolar quantities of nucleic acids. The sensors’ measuring fields consist of carbon nanotubes with receptors coupled to them. After that, Andrew deMello from ETH Zürich will present microfluid systems for high-throughput experiments with DNA, living cells and multi-cell organ-isms. Michael Glocker from the Univer-sity of Rostock will focus on the use of bio-analysis in diagnostics. In a ses-sion on “Clinical Proteomics” on Wednesday afternoon, he will report on mass-spectrometry methods that can identify the dangerous obstetric syndrome HELLP. HELLP occurs in one to two out of 300 pregnancies and is fatal for three to five percent of pa-tients and ten to 40 percent of unborn babies.
Identifying hidden mycotoxins Molecularly imprinted polymers are some of the most promising, still relatively new analysis tools. They recognize analytes according to the lock-and-key principle. In the Metabo-lomics Symposium on Tuesday after-
noon, Boguslaw Buszewski from Nicolaus Kopernikus University in Torun, Poland, will explain how they can be used to detect mycotoxins and their metabolites. Molecular imprinting technology is also the focus of the session on “Sensors with and for Nanoparticles” on Thursday morning.
Ronald Maul from the Leibniz Insti-tute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops in Großbeeren will also address the issue of mycotoxins. He will exam-ine the problem of detecting chemi-cally modified mycotoxins that evade classic analysis methods. His lecture is part of the symposium on “Modern Analytical Tools to Ensure the Safety and Authenticity of Food” on Thursday afternoon. Everyone interested in food analysis should make a note of this event. DNA-based methods used to verify the authenticity of foods and the use of metabolomics to identify wines will also be discussed.
Monitoring water and air quality Environmental analysis is also a focal point of the analytica Conference. Water chemists will get their money’s worth on the morning of April 1. Be-sides identifying pharmaceutical residues, pesticides and other hazard-ous substances, they also have to identify their metabolites, which are often also toxic. This is done using a combination of turbulent-flow liquid chromatography and orbitrap mass spectrometry, as Damia Barceló from the Institute of Environmental Assess-ment and Water Research in Barcelona, Spain, will explain using transformed pharmaceuticals in waste water as an example.
32
4 analytica Conference
The full-day symposium on “Aerosol and Health” is also on the first day of the fair. A total of 14 speakers from Germany, Finland, Great Britain, Nor-way, Australia, Canada, the United States and Switzerland will take an in-depth look at the identification and effects of aerosols. Per Schwarze from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in Oslo, for example, will report on the cocktail of pollutants that is produced by the combustion of diesel. Robert Healy from the University of Toronto will make a presentation about single-particle mass spectrometry, a technique that detects single particles and the sources of pollution.
Focus on crystallography 2014 is the international year of crys-tallography, so a symposium on this subject is an absolute must. On Wednesday, experts from Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands will
give ten lectures explaining crystal structures and their significance in drug research and the development of new biomaterials, for example.
In short, no other event gives par-ticipants access to such comprehen-sive information about the entire range of chemical and bio-analysis methods as the analytica Conference. The program of events will be rounded out by a poster show and award ceremo-nies. As in previous years, the confer-ence is being organized by the German Chemical Society (GDCh), the Associa-tion for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (GBM) and the German Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (DGKL). The analytica Confer-ence takes place directly next to the exhibition halls at the ICM – Internatio-nales Congress Center München and is free of charge for all visitors attending analytica. l

5 Forum Biotech

Forum Biotech 5
Inspiration for bio-analysts This year’s Biotech Forum in Hall A3 has more to offer than ever
before: Besides practical tips and new methods for life sciences, there
will also be several panel discussions on personalized medicine. And
the Science Slam means science for everyone—well proportioned and
easy to understand.
Pharmaceuticals corporations and biotech companies have joined forces to make personalized medicine a reality. Treatments that are tailored to individual genetic profiles reduce side effects and improve the success of the therapy. But how will personalized medicine be received by patients? And what strategies are diagnostics com-panies using to confront this trend? The Biotech Forum will feature several sessions that will examine these questions.
On Tuesday and Wednesday (from 12:00–14:00), the Life Science Re-search Group in the VDGH (German Diagnostics Association) will present a series of lectures on personalized medicine and biomarkers. On Friday, Going Public Media is organizing two panel discussions with representa-tives of the pharmaceuticals industry and the health-care sector. Finance Day (see Page 62), which is devoted to financing in the biotech industry, takes place here on Thursday. As always, the program of events on the
first two days of the fair revolves around new developments in the bio-analysis sector. Anyone who wants to analyze interaction between biomol-ecules without marking them first should be sure not to miss the presen-tation by Horiba Scientific. The com-pany will introduce a high-throughput platform for label-free affinity and kinetics studies. BD Biosciences, on the other hand, will report on the progress it has made in flow cytom-etry. The method is practical for test-ing drinking water as well as for moni-toring fermentation processes.
Science Slam on WednesdayLast but not least, the highlight for anyone who has very little time but really enjoys science: A Science Slam is being held at the Biotech Forum on Wednesday. In just ten minutes, the “Science Slammers” will update their audiences on the latest developments in areas such as reptile research, hardening of the arteries and stem-cell development. l

In

und reproduzierbar her.

Formaldehyd in Luft

Nanotechnology a driving forceFrom automated sample preparation to production monitoring:
Users who attend the Forum Laboratory & Analytics in Hall B2 will find
out how to make their processes more efficient. There will be Best
Practice presentations on the first three days of the fair, and Friday
is Job Day.
Laboratory sensors instead of classic spectrometers, hyperspectral imaging in French-fry production, and field-flow fractionation as an alternative to chromatography: This excerpt of the topics being covered at the Forum Laboratory & Analytics shows that manufacturers of analysis equipment are not resting on their laurels. They are responding to technological ad-vances in the material sciences and
other disciplines with innovative devices. Nanotechnology in particular is a driving force behind new develop-ments. Retsch will use the forum to present a high-energy ball mill for pulverizing samples and producing nanoparticles. The first commercial devices for asymmetrical field-flow fractionation, which will be introduced by Wyatt Technologies, are very prom-ising. They separate and characterize nanoparticles as well as proteins and other macromolecules.
Industrial process monitoring is also on the program of events at the Forum Laboratory & Analytics. In its presen-tation, the G.A.S. (Gesellschaft für analytische Sensorsysteme) will concentrate on volatile organic com-pounds as quality markers. EVK DI Kerschhaggl, on the other hand, will presenting a hyperspectral imaging system that combines spectrometry with digital image processing and makes quantitative analyses possible in the production line—without elabo-rate laboratory analyses.
The trend toward automation also remains strong in analysis laborato-ries. Gerstel will demonstrate how automated sample preparation can simplify the analysis of bodily fluids and other complex samples using the identification of drugs in the blood or pesticides in food as an example. Finally, on the last day of the fair, the Forum Laboratory & Analytics will become a career springboard, because that is where jobvector career day takes place. l

7 Finance Day I BMWi
The ticket for an international careerOnce again, analytica is giving German start-ups an opportunity to
present their innovations at the BMWi joint exhibition stands at this
year’s fair. Biotechnology companies that are looking for reliable fi-
nancing can get tips from experts and gather information about the
latest financing trends at Finance Day.
For the fourth time, Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and analytica are helping new companies enter the marketplace. As part of the promotion program, analytica is organizing two joint exhibits where select German start-ups can participate at affordable rates. The objective of the program is to promote new companies as a source of impetus for the scientific and com-mercial sectors and, in doing so, bol-ster innovative strength in Germany.
Once again, the “Made in Germany” joint exhibition stands in Hall A3 and B2 will give 12 new companies a chance to present their new technolo-gies and business ideas to an audience of international professionals. The
companies participating this year include BioVariance in Waldsassen, NanoBioAnalytics in Berlin and Sci-omics in Heidelberg.
As a spin-off of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) that was founded in 2013, Sciomics deals with antibody microarrays and has estab-lished robust protocols for high-quality production and application. NanoBio-Analytics specializes in the develop-ment and manufacture of micro- and nano-optic systems for optical sensor technology and bioanalysis.

stand how investors approach things. For the first time ever, the fourth Finance Day, which is organized by Going Public Media, is being held in the Biotech Forum in Hall A3 on the third day of the fair (April 3). Although bio-technology and its future-oriented innovations and new methods have generated a great deal of interest among investors, there is still a short-age of companies that are willing to invest. For that reason, financing is still extremely difficult, especially for small and medium-sized biotech companies. As part of analytica, Fi-nance Day gives companies including start-ups an in-depth look at the latest challenges and solutions. Biotech entrepreneurs meet with investors, and lectures and panel discussions inform interested visitors about the latest financing trends and models that pertain to biotechnology. New business models—moving away strictly therapeutics developers in favor of platform companies—are supposed to offer more financing alternatives and, in doing so, make companies less dependent on venture capital. Other solution approaches include public-private partnerships (PPPs) as well as cluster and research funding of universities, institutes and SMEs. Finance Day also examines the questions “What is the right path for ‘my’ company?” and “Where is the industry headed?”
Besides presentations about part-nership and financing models (among other things with Prof. Dr. Maasj from Sanofi and Dr. Claus Dohrmann from Evotec), the elevator pitch is also on the agenda. Plans also call for a panel discussion on the topic of bio-econom-ics with Dr. Viola Bronsema, Managing Director of BIO Deutschland e.V., Prof. Dr. André Koltermann from Clariant, Thomas Moser, Managing Partner of Pontis Capital, and Prof. Dr. Christine Lang from Organobalance. Dr. Siegfried Bialojan, Executive Director and Head of the Life Science Center at Ernst & Young will give participants a look at the status quo of the life-sciences industry. Finally, representatives of Bayern Kapital, HighTech-Gründer-fonds, MIG Fonds, and Peppermint VenturePartners will discuss the topic of early-phase financing and venture capital. l
Topics at a glance:
Panel 1: Early-phase financing/Venture capital: “Challenge accepted!? Who is still investing in biotech start-ups?” Panel 2: “Cooperation between Big Pharma and biotech—Partnership or compromise solution?” Panel 3: Bio-economy: “More than industrial biotechnology or a buzzword?”Panel 4: Biotech companies that are listed on the stock exchange: “Is biotech “in” again with investors?”

Job Day 8
Turbocharge your careerThe final day of analytica 2014 revolves around jobs and careers.
Job Day on Friday, April 4, gives qualified entry-level employees as well
as industry professionals and experts an extensive program of events
on the topic of careers including information, lectures and networking
opportunities. It also includes jobvector career day, which is organized
by the jobvector careers platform, and Student Day.
On Friday, April 4, Hall B2 at analytica will be a career springboard for every-one who is looking for a new profes-sional challenge in the analysis, labo-ratory technology or biotechnology sectors. The objective is to bring exhibitors together with potential employees—from technical experts to qualified future professionals—to discuss their prospects. jobvector career day gives scientists, engineers and technicians an opportunity to gather information about prospective jobs directly from the source, talk with HR managers from leading companies and get tips for their applications. Those who want to get an impression of potential employers can do so in the jobvector Forum in Hall B2 (Stand 437). That is where companies introduce themselves and inform prospects about job opportunities, areas of activity and individual career options. Among other things, this year’s partici-
pating companies include Thermo Fisher Scientific, Eppendorf, Qiagen, Shimadzu, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Sandoz and a host of medium-sized companies. During the entire fair, those looking for jobs can stop by the careers stand (Stand 437, Hall B2) to get tips about planning their careers. Those who are interested can also search for their dream job on the obvector Jobwall.
Perfectly prepared for job interviews Convincing applications can be an admission ticket to a new dream job. Potential job applicants can find out if their application portfolios are con-vincing enough by attending the application portfolio check: As part of jobvector career day, specialists from an employment agency will check any documents that applicants bring with them for their strengths and weak-nesses and give tips on how to improve them. Those who still need photo-graphs can have professional applica-tion photographs taken at the fair. A live job interview is another highlight. An applicant answers an HR profes-sional’s questions while being ob-served by specialists. After the inter-view, the interview will be analyzed and experts will give practical recom-mendations about what is important in an interview—perfect training for the next job interview. l

analytica network 9
The analytica network brings together supply and demand
The increasing standard of living in Asian metropolises is increasing
expectations as well as demand for analysis testing—among other
things in food and medication manufacturing. Thanks to analytica’s
industry platforms in India, China and Vietnam, the fair has three
events to help meet this growing demand.
India—Focus on food safety The seventh analytica Anacon India was held in Mumbai in November 2013. During the three-day fair, some 100 exhibitors presented their products to a total of 4,022 trade visitors. One area that the fair focused on was innovative methods and technologies in the sector for food safety. The analytica Anacon Conference featured a number of lectures on two days of the fair, giving participants another opportu-nity for a professional exchange be-tween the scientific and commercial sectors.
China—Better quality control The increase in general quality stan-dards in China’s metropolises has resulted in demand for high-quality analysis instruments. Generally speaking, investments in biomedicine, food safety and environmental protec-tion are expected to increase in the future. analytica China is the leading industry platform in China. From September 24–26, 2014, it will give Chinese and international companies another chance to present themselves and their solutions to the market. A total of 580 exhibitors and nearly 17,000 visitors participated in the fair in 2012. One highlight was the accom-
panying analytica China Conference with renowned Chinese and interna-tional speakers and more than 100 lectures and panel discussions on the topics of chemistry, biomedicine, environmental analysis, food safety as well as mass spectrometry, metabolo-mics and mobile laboratory technol-ogy.
Vietnam—Favorable business alter- natives Vietnam plans to become a modern industrial country by the year 2020. According to Germany Trade & Invest, Vietnam’s gross domestic product will increase by an average of approxi-mately six percent per year between now and 2025. Combined with low customs tariffs and a liberal service sector, conditions for commercial enterprises are very favorable. For companies that exhibit at analytica Vietnam, the next exhibition from April 15–17, 2015 is a successful presenta-tion platform with promising business opportunities. A total of 114 exhibitors and more than 3,400 trade visitors came to the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Centre in Ho Chi Minh City in 2013. l
