Analysis of Jing-mei from "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan

In the story, Two Kinds, Amy Tan writes about a relationship between a mother and adaughter. The mother of Jing-mei wants her daughter to become famous, but Jing-mei just wantsto be herself. Tan writes about two songs played by Jing- mei, Perfectly Contented and

Pleading Child. In the story the faster and aggressive song, Pleading Child, best representsthe mother, and the slower happier song, Perfectly Contented, represents Jing -mei.

Jing-mei was happy just being herself, but, unfortunately, her mother expected more. Jing- meismother pushed her to become famous. She thought that was whats best for Jing -mei. Just likeyou, she said, Not the best because you are not trying. (Tan, pg. 35) She tried everything inher power to make Jing-mei talented in some way. She pushes Jing-mei right over the edge.

Jing-mei soon found her true, aggressive nature. Everytime her mother snapped at her to tryharder, she snapp ed back. For unlike my mother, I did not believe I could do anything I wantedto be. I could only be me. (Tan, pg. 41) Because of Jing -meis different view she and her

mother began to fight a lot. The greater they disputed, the farther away they drifted. Until theyrealized the piano wasnt only the root of their problems, but the solution as well.

After Jing- meis mother dies, in the end, she went back to the piano. Jing -mei began to play thesong that caused the breaking point of her relationship with her mother. Then she played thesong next to it with great satisfaction. And after I played them both a few times, I realized theywere two halves of the same song. (Tan, pg. 42) Like the ying -yang and the songs, Jing- meisrelationship with her mother may seem disastrous and apart, but together they share a strong

    bond that makes them whole.

Jing- meis determination to stay that she is, is much like the song Perfectly Contented, she is

satisfied with the way things are. Yet her mothers pushy, aggressiv e attitude is a lot likePleading Child. She pushes and begs Jing -mei to cooperate and become famous. Even thoughthe two disagree, like the songs, they form one beautiful song.

wo Ki nds by Amy Tan: Literary Analysis - There are many key elements which together makeup a story, namely a story's setting, its main characters, the plot, and the symbolism it contains.A story's setting is usually described in the beginning of the story, giving an explanation ofwhere and when the story is taking place. Many stories have a protagonist and an antagonist aswell as other key characters. The protagonist is the "hero or antihero; (the) character you tend to'root for'." . The antagonist opposes the protagonist, usually creating some sort of conflict withinthe story. The plot of a story is the way the events play out in the story. Along with theseelements, there is usually some sort of symbolism within the story. Symbols occur in moststories, not always in the form of an item. Symbolism can also be demonstrated in words, colors,or anything that seems to represent a deeper meaning. The story "Two Kinds" by Amy Tandemonstrates all of the elements mentioned above.

    Setting and Characters

    2/15

The story's main events take place in Chinatown throughout the 1950s and perhaps early 1960s.The main character of the story, who is also the protagonist, is the author herself: Amy Tan. Theantagonist happens to be her own mother, who is always pushing Amy to discover some hiddentalent and be someone she is not. There are a few other minor characters in the story. There isLindo Jong (who she calls Auntie Lindo), who is a close friend of Amy's mother. Waverly Jong

is Auntie Lindo's daughter, who is close to Amy's age. Amy's piano instructor, who she dubs"Old Chong", plays a small role in the story. Amy's dad is included in the text, but does not playmuch of a role.

    Plot

The plot of a story has six key parts that are normally sequential. A story begins with anexposition, and follows with rising action. Next is some sort of conflict which usually results intothe climax of the story. Climax can be defined as "a moment of great or culminating intensity ina narrative or drama". . Some sort of falling action occurs next, which finally ends the story witha resolution.

    Exposition

In "Two Kinds", the exposition is clear in the first couple of pages. The story begins byexplaining that Amy's family moved to America when she was a baby, in 1949. Her mother isclear in her goals: she wants Amy to be a child prodigy (a person with exceptional talent) andfamous. Although in the beginning Amy seems accepting of her mother's goal, there are someundertones which are clear to the reader that her mother may go too far.

    Rising Action

Amy's mother going too far, in fact, is the rising action of the story. Amy writes about all of theways her mother tries to 'discover' her special talents. It begins with Amy getting a perm so shecould be the next Shirley Temple, and the rising action concludes with Amy being forced to take

piano lessons. During the rising action, there is clear conflict between Amy and her mother.Amy's self-esteem seems to falter as she is constantly disappointing her mother time and timeagain. Her mother's determination is further sparked by a couple of scenes involving 'AuntieLindo". Auntie Lindo is very proud of her daughter's chess playing skills, and brags of all ofWaverly's trophies. During one conversation Amy's mother stretches the truth a little incompetition, and claims Amy is talented with the gift of music. At this point Amy writes: "Andright then, I was determined to put a stop to her foolish pride". .

Climax The climax of the story is a piano recital and the events that unfold the day after. Her mother isso proud of Amy's musical talent; she even invites Auntie Lindo and Waverly to Amy's first

piano recital. Although Amy slacked on her practicing during the rising action of the story, sheactually feels confident about doing well at the recital. She is overconfident, in fact, and her

performance was a disaster. She disappoints her mother, and makes a fool of her. It is also clearthat she has disappointed herself, and she regrets not taking lessons more seriously. The next

day, Amy's stubborn mother expects her to practice piano, as if nothing has gone wrong. This iswhen Amy puts her foot down and refuses. To get her mother to back off, she tells her motherthat she wished she were dead. We discover Amy's mother has had other babies that have died. This part explains a lot about why her mother is so hard on Amy. After Amy hurts her mother, her mother finally gives up on Amy being a prodigy.

    Falling Action

During the falling action, Amy fast forwards through the years. She explains that she never didthe best she could at anything, just to spite her mother. We discover that deep inside, Amy didhave some pride in her piano-when Amy's mother tells her that the piano is hers, and she shouldtake it.

    Resolution

In the resolution, we come to the present time and Amy's mother has recently passed. She has the

piano tuned, and sits down to play.

    Symbolism

Symbolism in literature "might include visual or sound elements as well as language". . Amy's piano was the main symbol of this story. In the end of the story, the fact that she had it tuned andactually sat down to play shows us that she really cared about her mother-and the piano-after all.The songs that she plays at the end are also a symbol of the story, itself. She mentions playingtwo songs. The first is titled "Pleading Child", and the second one: "Perfectly Contented". Theseare songs that she had played when she was a child. She notices for the first time, after all ofthese years, that these two songs are actually two halves to the same song. The song represents

Amy's life. This is how the story ends.

    Conclusion

After reading the above summary, we get a pretty good idea of what Amy's story is about and thetheme behind it. She regrets not trying her best, and the way she has taken her mother for grantedin her life. A strong message like this makes us reflect on our own lives and relationships withthe ones we love. Amy constructs the story in a way that makes the plot flow, and we areinterested in what will happen to her next. Some of us may even feel like she is too hard on the

protagonist-her mother. The ending resolves these feelings, because we discover she feels this, too. The main characters are important in the events that unfold in the story. Without Auntie

Lindo, for example, her mother may not have been so compelled to see Amy excel. Theseelements, and the way the author has combined them, build an interesting story that makes usreflect upon our own lives, as well.

Analysis of Two Kinds by Amy Tan

In the story Two Kinds, the author, Amy Tan, intends to make reader think of the meaning behind the

story. She doesnt speak out as an analyzer to illustrate what is the real problem between her and hermother. Instead, she uses her own point of view as a narrator to state what she has experienced and

what she feels in her mind all along the story. She has not judged what is right or wrong based on heropinion. Instead of giving instruction of how to solve a family issue, the author chooses to write anarrative diary containing her true feeling toward events during her childhood, which offers reader notonly a clear account, but insight on how the narrator feels frustrated due to failing her mothersexpectations which leads to a large conflict between the narrator and her mother.

By stating how other people behave or interact, the author offers a great chance for readers to interpretfairly for themselves what the reason for any conflict may be, or the nature of any essential contrastbetween the narrator and other adults in the story. In the story, there are many self-righteous opinionsfrom people, which seem to be ironic to the readers; For example, her mothers aggressive attitude ofshowing off her daughter, her piano teachers self -praise claiming him as Beethoven. All of thenarrations including conversation clearly depict a different characteristic between the narrator andother people. For instance, a conversation occurs between the narrator and her mother when themother criticizing a girl who seems similar to the author on TV which reveals dissimilar understanding

for both of them to each others behavior. At first, the daughter speaks out for the girl by questioningher mother by saying why picking on her [] Shes pretty good. Maybe shes not the best, but shestrying hard. The daughter actually is defending for herself and reflecting that she feels uncomfortable

with her mothers disregard of her hard work. She wants to get her mothers compliments instead of hercriticisms. However, her mother response of, just like you, and, not the best. Because you not trying. Here, her mother doesnt really answer her question, instead wants her put more effort on trying, neglecting how much she has tried before. However, in her mothers perspective, she has never triedhard enough. By narratively stating the conversations she has encountered, readers perceive a strongimplication of the reason for a future conflict between her and her mother.

By looking through the narrators eyes, readers are able to understand her stress and struggle from herstandpoint. At first , the narrator keeps trying to reach her mothers expectation. She decides not to

response to her mothers attempt of finding her prodigy after seeing her mothers disappointed faceonce again, and feel, something inside her began to die. The thing which dies is her confidence

and pride, and also part of her responsibility which she puts on herself in response to her mothersexpectation. In a conversation between her and her mother when she is sent to a piano lesson, she

questions, Why dont you like me the way I am? [],which reveals that she doesnt feel her motherlikes her. This example points out a deepest fear in her mind that is what if her mother doesnt like anormal kid like her. As a result of her frustration and lack of concern from her mother, she begins to

stop following her mothers instruction, as a mean to protest her mothers endless expectation. However, she cares tremendously what her mother thinks of her. For example, she reveals that, afterthe piano recital, what devastated her is her mothers expression, which is quiet, blank look thatsaid she had lost everything. This shows how much her mothers emotion can influence her even after

    8/15

her assertion not to be changed by her mother anymore. Readers can then realize that the narrator

never really hates her mother; instead, she hates to fail the expectation from her mother. By standingin the narrators shoes, readers can then understand the origin and the process of her decision tobecome a lazy kid, and shows that the evil part of the narrator is actually an immature attempt tomake her mother accept her, she does this by defining herself as a normal person.

The author depicts her mothers characteristics through the philosophy her mother has revealed to herand the conversations between them. It states her mothers belief in the early beginning that she thinkspeople could be anything you wanted to be in America, and there were so many ways for things toget better. Her mothers optimistic attitude toward a large feasibility of reaching personal dreammakes her mother puts the same amount of expectation on the daughter, in a sense of helping thedaughter to have a successful life. Therefore, her mother shares explicitly her belief to her and evenpushes her to try new stuff; this is a mean to love her in the mothers point of view. However, theauthor arranges few arguments conversation which indicates what her mothers true expectation of heris. She response to the narrator that who ask you be genius? and shouted that only ask you be yourbest. For you sake. [] Here her mother emphasizes her real purpose of pushing the narrator to learnand try new skill. Moreover, when her mother shouted to her that only two kinds of daughters, thosewho are obedient and those who follow their own mind, it reveals what her mothers truly desire is tohave the narrator listen to her and consider her opinion as good advice.

Although the author never shows her opinion throughout the story to let readers know what have sheenlightened from the whole conflict between her and her mother, she implies what she believes now asa grown-up and put those thoughts into the story as a reference to give readers a direction to look into.

For example, she indicates that, so maybe I neve r really gave myself a fair chance. I did pick up thebasics pretty quickly, and I might have become a good pianist at that young age. This gives the reader aregretful feeling for not attempting to learn. And also, she tells readers in the end of the story that she

hasnt even notice the song she used to play is incomplete, which not only lets the reader know shedoesnt concentrate on learning, but also is a symbol that she leaves her prodigy part of her unused. Incontrast of her regretful message to readers, she gives several clues which function as excuse to those

misunderstanding which the author has on her mother during her childhood. For example, she mentionsin the beginning the hardship her mother has experienced back in China, which makes her mot her lay

all of the hope in America, more specifically, on the narrator herself. Also, it surprises the narrator thatwhen she finds out her mother has no accusations and blame on her when she messes up the recital. This part reveals that her mother doe snt blame her about the disaster at the recital, an event whichmakes her mother act as though she lost everything; instead of punishing the narrator, her motherstill keep pushing her to learn piano after the recital, which is a sign that her mother doesnt really onlycare for herself, but her daughters future. The author intends to contain part of her furtherunderstanding inside the story so that the reader will not feel its all about an accusation to her mother.

By looking into the narrator s fantasy of being famous, her frustration when failing expectation, herawareness of self-consciousness, her resistance of being changed and even the way she describesothers, the reader becomes more sympathetic to the narrator and the further understanding a desire of

being loved which lead to her misbehaving with her mother. As a consequence, the story suggests thatboth of the narrator (daughter) and mother have their standpoint, and they all behave based on theirbest belief and decision. Therefore, a style of critical review or an evaluation to work on the story willnot be suitable. Rather than giving such an instructional textbook guessing about what is right or wrong,a narrative style of writing may be the best reference to look into for readers to judge by ourselves and

generate solutions based on readers own experience and belief.

"Two Kinds'' is the last story in the second of four sections of Amy Tan's immensely successfulfirst book, The Joy Luck Club . Tan intended the book to be read as a loose collection ofinterrelated stories, but it is often referred to as a novel. Several of the stories appeared in
