Analysis of my music video 'Summer'
This first shot shows a drone shot of one of the main settings in the video. This is also a place where the middle of the ancillary product was taken. Giving it a
sense of brand identity, as the audience will recognise this scenery and link it to the album and visa versa.
The text over the scenery is in the font that is used throughout the album advert and the album – brand identity.
Putting the artists name at the start of the video is also a very common convention of music videos, I found out when researching music videos
of the pop genre
This shot starts closer to the rock and slowly zooms
out, whilst this is happening, the sound
played emphasizes this, the shot fits very well with the
sound playing.
This shot shows the artist on a beach. This links with the title of the song 'summer'.
Whilst he is singing 'to my heartbeat sound' he puts his hand to his chest to emphasise the
lyric 'heartbeat'
This shot is shown when the lyrics are 'long as skies are blue'. Showing a the blue sky is matching the lyrics with the visuals. This is a theory of Andrew Goodwin's. He believes that music videos match the lyrics with the visuals, I decided to conform
to this theory in my music video.
This scene shows a close up of the girl texting someone else with messages such as 'I love
you' whilst meanwhile her boyfriend is texting her that he misses her. This is shown on the
lyrics 'but you lied so soon'. This is to show that the girl is cheating on the boy in the music
video. It also, again, matches the lyrics with the visuals – Andrew Goodwin.
The lyrics just before this shot are 'when I met you in the summer' during this shot, just music is playing.
However, the audience can infer that this is during the summer due to the flowers and greenery around
them. It seems that in the summer they are happy, as this shot shows them hugging and laughing together.
The audience may assume that the boy does not know about the girl cheating on him yet.
As I had mentioned in previous blogposts, I found videos such as 'Adore You' by Miley Cyrus very interesting, as some pop artists create whole music videos under bed sheets. I did not want this to be my whole video, however I wanted to incorporate it as I liked the
effect it gives. The bed and bed sheets suggest a sense of intimacy and show that the boy and girl are in
love. They are, again, happy and smiling which suggest that the boy does not yet know about the girl cheating on him. The flower petals on the bed also infer the fact that it is
summer, and as the lyrics say, the couple were happy in the summer, hence why they are laughing and having a good time whilst it is still summer – the girl cheats in autumn/winter
This shot shows the boy and the girl holding hands running through brown autumnal leaves, this shows the change of
seasons.
The lyrics are 'we fell in love as the leaves turned brown'. This shot shows the couple in love – holding hands suggest intimacy and she is looking at him lovingly. The visuals once again match
with the lyrics.
This shot shows the girl laughing hysterically. This is shown on the lyrics 'you act so innocent'. This may
infer that he now understands that she is putting on an act. The shot fits nicely with the lyrics, as, he is aware
that her innocence is an act, and she is laughing hysterically.
This shot shows the girl kissing another boy. This is shown on the lyrics 'but you lied so soon'. LYRICS AND VISUALS. This shot shows
Danny D seeing his girlfriend cheating on him in the background. It is clear that this is in the autumn time as there are no flowers and the sky is grey. The video shows the changing of seasons and as it
gets to winter, the girl cheats on the boy.
Straight after the previous shot, this shot is shown. The girl has leaves in her hair to suggest the changing of the
seasons. She has a straight face which suggest she is not in love or putting on an act of innocence anymore, as the shot of her laughing before the cheating scene would suggest. There is a clear contrast between the
shot before the cheating scene and this shot.
It is very clear to see that the seasons have changed now. This medium close up is shown whilst the boy sings 'as the leaves turned brown', the brown leaves falling match the lyrics with the visuals. The boy looks upset in this shot and the audience
can infer that from this that he is upset over the girl.
This shot shows the boy and girl on the lyrics 'when I met you in the summer', the lyrics suggest that he is
looking back on their time together. here is a 'flashback' filter on top of this shot to show this. The
boy is looking back on the time they had together, suggesting they are no longer together
My music video includes :
- a narrative and a performance aspect – this is something, that when researching music videos of the pop genre, I found they had both a narrative and a performance aspect
- it is common for a pop music video to have a 'boy meets girl narrative' - I incorporated this into my music video, with a slight twist of the girl cheating on the boy
- Andrew Goodwins theory – my music video matches the lyrics and the visuals. It also matches the beats to the different shots and shows close ups of the artist.
- Brand Identity – scenery throughout is similar to that of the album and advert – font used is the same on the cd cover and advert.
- effects – flashback, slow motion etc. Used in a lot of pop music videos
