Analysis of Sarah Jane
Adventures Title Sequence
Representation
• The plot for this children’s TV Drama is a spin off of the popular
family TV drama Doctor Who. Where Sarah Jane is an accomplice
for Doctor Who.
• The TV drama represents a fictional sci-fi world that exists around
the real world where they fight the evil alien forces that are at work
in Britain. It is a fantasy world that is more suitable for younger
children than Doctor Who. This can be seen in the jumbled up letters
and numbers in the title sequence which suggests a puzzling world.
Realism
• Sarah Jane Adventures is a Sci-fi drama so the plot is completely
fictional.
• However, the use of real actors set in a realistic average setting of a
London neighborhood that the audience can relate to makes it more
real.
• The title sequence is mainly done with graphics which takes away
any realism. However, it does give the audience a sense of what the
series is about.
Features of the Title Sequence
• The title sequence has many special effects due to the nature and
genre of the TV drama.
• The theme song is well known as it is similar to the Doctor Who
tune.
• The use of dark colours – black, blue and dark purple (similar effect
to the blues and reds in Doctor who) suggest a mysterious dark
world.
• The effect of the numbers and letters suggest a muddled mixed up
world.
• The use of child like handwriting for the title suggests what the target
audience is and help the audience relate to it.
