Analysing Use of Photography in the Music Magazine Genre – Name/ edition of Publica tion ____ Q MAGAZINE ____

Feature How is it used? What is the effect on the target audience? What is the image (briefly describe what you see)

Brandon Flowers is the main focus on Q magazine. He is posed in a way where we, the audience, are looking up at him. Also, the way his face is tilted up shows that his style, personality and music has an edge to it.

There is also a smaller scaled photo of a man called Neil Young, he is obviously a less important part

He shows an authoritative pose, which has an effect on women; many will find it sexually appealing which reels them. Men, on the other hand, will look at the main focus and find common interest between Brandon Flowers and them, possibly the love of the same kind of music or the style. As Q is a magazine for a slightly older generation, late twenties, middle aged it is obvious what kind of age group the magazine appeals too.

Camera shot/ camera angle The main focus image is a medium long shot; the subject is in a slight canted position.

The way the shot has been taken, it makes Brandon Flowers, the main focus; look as if he is of high authority. It shows he is a self assured character. Many men can relate to being ‘self assured’ so they see a similarity between them and the main focus.

Colour The colour’s used on the magazine, are white, for the background, and red, which is always used for the masthead for continuity.

The colours used show sophistication and elegance, this would appeal to the older generation rather than the younger generation, teens and younger, as it shows the magazine is worth its value and it’s not tacky.

Props No props are used in the magazine -

Clothes/hairstyles Flowers is wearing a black leather jacket and a black t-shirt, even though he is of slim build , the leather jacket makes him seem more muscular then he actually is and adds an edgy vibe to him, the t-shirt is tight , this shows he’s not insecure

Brandon Flowers style is very typical for a person who is into rock. This helps the audience recognise what genre of music is being highlighted, his typical rock style represents continuity to the audience, if the style was altered

about his figure. The black also connotes a dark side to him, and his music.

His stubble shows he’s a masculine man that has a fondness for his facial hair, but not embracing it to a large extent.

in a way that breaks from the norm then the audience wouldn’t be able to connect with the magazine, or possibly even the music of this band. Appearance is everything.

Cropping/ image manipulation Brandon Flowers’s head is tilted. The light is shown on the left side, to us, of his face. Making the right side darker and shown to have a shadow.

This shows the audience that he has a dark, sinister and rebellious side to him. That he has the confidence to do whatever he wants. Women would find this attractive and men would compare this to their personality. As many men see themselves as confident and self assured.

Conventional/ stereotypical The main focus is stereotypical as he is shown to wear a typical outfit of someone who represent rock music.

This all effects the reader and their choice whether or not to buy the magazine.

Mode of Address “I AM MORE ROCK AND ROLL THAN ANYONE YOU’LL EVER MEET” this quote is as if Flowers’s is actually speaking to the audience.

This quote from Flowers’s is as if he is speaking directly to the audience, this makes them feel singled out, but in a good way. Also, by saying that it means he must have a reason to why he thinks that so the audience will feel intrigued and want to purchase the magazine.
