Anaerobic Respiration

Learning intentions

To know the word equation for respiration

To understand the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration is.

To be able to identify areas where anaerobic respiration is useful.

Page 2: Anaerobic Respiration · When you exercise what happens to your muscles? When exercising muscles are using a lot of energy for exercise, eventually the oxygen supply is very low or

What is respiration?

Is it the same as breathing?

What are the reactants for aerobic respiration?

Where do we get the reactants from?

Write the word equation for respiration.

What is respiration?A chemical process in which energy is produced

in the body from food by using oxygen

Is it the same as breathing? No – breathing is biophysical (ie inhaling and

exhaling) respiration is biochemical (iegenerating energy by the breakdown of food)

What are the reactants for aerobic respiration?

Glucose and oxygen

Where do we get the reactants from? Our food (glucose) and the atmosphere

(oxygen)

Write the word equation for respiration.glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water +

When you exercise what happens to your muscles?

When exercising muscles are using a lot of energy for exercise, eventually the oxygen supply is very low or runs out. Your muscles

don’t just stop working though.

They begin to respire anaerobically.

When the body cannot supply the cells with the oxygen needed to break down glucose, then it has to carry out anaerobic

respiration. Energy is released without oxygen:

lacticacid energyglucose

Watch the video and answer the questions:

• What is anaerobic respiration?

Respiration without oxygen

• Which type of respiration is more efficient?

Aerobic

• Why can anaerobic respiration cause pain?

The build up of Lactic acid can cause muscle fatigue

• How does the cell produce energy in anaerobic respiration?

Using only glucose

• What are the products of anaerobic respiration?

Lactic acid (and some energy is released NOT produced)

Anaerobic Respiration

• When the body cannot supply the cells with enough oxygen needed to carry out aerobic respiration so energy is released without oxygen.

Model Answer:

• During strenuous exercise, our muscles require more energy so the rate of respiration increases. Oxygen is used up faster than it is replaced so energy is released from glucose only through anaerobic respiration. This process produces lactic acid which is poisonous to muscle cells, causing them to fatigue and stops them contracting and relaxing.

Oxygen Debt

• After anaerobic respiration, you continue to breath quickly to get the oxygen back into your body to get rid of the lactic acid.

• The oxygen debt is paid back by breaking down lactic acid into carbon dioxide and water.

carbondioxide

lacticacid oxygen water

Complete the sentences using the below words

Unlike aerobic respiration, anaerobic respiration is when energy is provided WITHOUT needing _________:

This happens when the body can’t provide oxygen quick enough for __________ respiration to take place.

Anaerobic respiration produces energy much _______ than aerobic respiration but only produces 1/20th as much.

Lactic acid is also produced, and this can build up in muscles causing pain, ______ and an oxygen ______.

This “debt” then needs to be “repaid” by deep breathing so oxygen can be used to break down the lactic acid into _______ and _______

Words – debt, oxygen, fatigue, aerobic, quicker, water, carbon dioxide

Glucose lactic acid + (a bit of energy)
