This past year has been momentous for University Prep. Head of School Erica Hamlin wrapped up her twelve-year tenure, and the Board of Trustees hired Matt Levinson to take over the leadership of the school.

All through the transition year, progress continued non-stop. Our technology initiative got off to a successful start in the Middle and Upper Schools. Students and teachers have responded by taking advantage of the new learning capabilities afforded by the devices, and the program has established itself with a firm foundation.

Our Global Programs also took a big step, with the Upper School adding a program in Gaborone, Botswana, and the Middle School launching its domestic cultural exchange in Santa Fe for seventh and

eighth graders. Both of the new additions were a resounding success.

In extracurricular activities, Puma athletics had the highest rate of participation in recent years – 75% in the Upper School and 89% in the Middle School – and we fielded 52 teams with 68 coaches across 9 sports!

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the community, the Annual Fund surpassed its goal, while the Erica and Nason Hamlin Endowed Scholarship Fund, created to honor departing Head of School Erica Hamlin, brought in over $820,000. As a result of your fantastic support, more students in need of financial aid will be able to attend University Prep, and our relationship with Rainier Scholars will be further strengthened.

2013-2014: A Year in Review

Dear Families, Friends, Faculty and Staff,

SPOON DICKEY University Prep 2013-2014 Board President

On October 23, 2013 the University Prep Board of Trustees appointed, by unanimous vote, Matt Levinson as our next Head of School. The Board was impressed by the overwhelmingly positive feedback given by parents, students, faculty and administrators after Matt’s two-day visit to campus. The Head of School search process began almost a year prior to this announcement and while Matt’s start date was July 1, 2014, his transition to Head of School started the day this announcement was made.

The Search Committee was chaired by past University Prep Board President and parent Mikal Thomsen and was composed of faculty, staff, parents, and other board members. We all feel very fortunate to have found a leader with Matt’s experience and ability to succeed Erica Hamlin and her twelve years of strong leadership.

Matt brings a record of successful team building and years of implementing strategic initiatives at some of the most outstanding independent schools in the country. He is an experienced teacher, leader and school administrator who has been at the forefront of using classroom technology to deepen teaching and learning, an experience he chronicled in From Fear to Facebook: One School’s Journey, nominated for National Book of the Year by Foreword Reviews. Prior to coming to University Prep, Matt served as

Assistant Head of School at Marin Country Day School in Corte Madera, California. He previously served as Assistant Head of School at the Nueva School in Hillsborough, CA, following fourteen years as a high school history teacher, department head, dean of upper school, and soccer and basketball coach at Princeton Day School in Princeton, New Jersey. A graduate of Haverford College, he earned a master’s degree in Social Studies Education from Columbia University Teachers College.

Matt visited University Prep several times throughout the 2013-2014 school year. He attended graduation in May and he and his wife, Pri, even attended a University Prep alumni event in San Francisco, meeting twenty alums and hearing how their University Prep experience prepared them for college and their careers.

To help Matt, Pri and their two children, Sanjay and Maya, with their move to Seattle, a Transition Committee was formed and chaired by Board of Trustees’ members Ruth Tressel and Linda Walker. The fifteen-member committee included faculty, staff, parents, other Board members, and one student, who all worked to introduce Matt to the entire University Prep community and ensure a smooth transition for the family.

Everyone is very excited to welcome the Levinsons to the University Prep community!

Erica Hamlin became University Prep’s Head of School in 2002, retiring in June 2014. To honor her legacy of achievement at University Prep, we created the Erica and Nason Hamlin Endowed Scholarship Fund. Its purpose is to perpetuate our commit-ment to a culturally rich and diverse school community. Proceeds from this fund benefit students in need of financial aid with first priority given to Rainier Scholars students.

The school has grown remarkably in size under Erica’s leadership. Diversity and inclusivity in all facets of school life has also grown remarkably. The school is committed to educating a student population with a wide array of economic backgrounds, races, ethnicities, cultures, family dynamics, sexual orientations, physical abilities and learning styles. The Erica and Nason Hamlin Endowed Scholarship Fund will play a strong role in ensuring that financial aid keeps pace with the school’s growth.

Throughout the 2013-2014 school year, the entire community was asked to join in support of this effort to honor Erica’s legacy. Steven and Cathy Beth Hooper served as Campaign Chairs and several former Trustees gave generously in support of the initial phase of the Hamlin Endow-ment effort. Soon after, a group of committed families and Board members raised $143,000 to motivate auction attendees to give an equal amount at the University Prep auction, where the endow-ment was the year’s Fund-A-Need. By June 2014, $820,000 had been raised to support financial aid and Rainier Scholars students.

The campaign to raise money for The Erica and Nason Hamlin Endowed Scholarship Fund was truly a community-wide effort. It demonstrates the commitment we all share to promoting an inclusive and diverse school environment.

Endowment ensures that University Prep will continue to provide an outstanding educational experience. Endowment allows the school to realize ambitious long-term plans with a reliable, ongoing stream of income. The principal is kept in place, while up to 5% of the earnings from the endowment provide monies for special projects, financial aid, academic excellence and faculty/staff enrichment. University Prep has $9.5 million in endowment investments and pledges (including quasi endowment).

The Heritage Society of University Prep was established by the Board of Trustees to recognize and honor those who have chosen to help advance the school’s mission by including University Prep in their estate plans. Gifts may include a bequest, naming the school as a beneficiary on an insurance policy or retirement account, a life income-deferred gift, or real estate.

All gifts become part of our endowment and help to improve the quality of education and access to that education, now and for generations to come.

The U Prep alumni program continues to grow steadily by involving more and more alumni of all class years in a variety of ways. Our 13-member Alumni Board now includes alumni representatives from the Classes of 1986 to 2008 who meet monthly to help develop the program, plan events, and reach out to other alumni. Social media is still our most successful vehicle for con-necting with alumni. Our Facebook group is very active, with over 1,000 members. This year we also focused on developing professional networking opportunities for our alums, increasing our LinkedIn network to 177 and hosting a networking lunch and happy hour in downtown Seattle.

Every one of our Alumni Board members made a gift to the Alumni Scholarship Fund

and encouraged their classmates to join them by writing notes on solicitation letters and sending emails. Alumni gifts were up 27% over last year, with 88 alums contributing $21,734 to the school. Awareness of our fundraising efforts is increasing and participation by alums continues to grow.

Our winter party had over 80 alums in attendance. Our reunion weekend in July also had a great turn-out. We hosted 90 alums for our annual Mariners game event, as well as 75 alumni at an on-campus happy hour with live music, food and tours. Members of the reunion classes (1993, 2003 and 2008) also enjoyed their special class reunion dinners at separate locations in downtown Seattle.

Once again our community came together to execute a successful Annual Fund cam-paign. We exceeded our goal of $550,000 by 5%, raising a total of $579,000. Our parent giving reached 77% participation. We received 100% participation from the Board of Trustees and Alumni Board, and nearly 100% from our faculty and staff.

We could not have accomplished this task without the tireless efforts of our Annual Fund Co-chairs Frederic and Marta De Wulf and Geoff and Belinda Buscher, along with many parent volunteers who reached out to their peers. Over the summer, we produced our first Annual Fund informational video, which was shown at each class night as well as sent to parents via email and posted on our website. Our fall matching opportunity for parents, which was provided by 20 generous families, got us off to a great start by generating 128

gifts of $1,000 or more by October 31.

By the end of the campaign in June, our entire community was involved and we received gifts at the following levels:

$20,000+ 1 gift $10,000–19,999 11 gifts $5,000–9,999 18 gifts $2,500–4,999 30 gifts $1,000–2,499 159 gifts $500–999 78 gifts $250–499 59 gifts $100–249 181 gifts $50–99 84 gifts $0–49 98 gifts

The Annual Fund enables us to provide an exceptional educational experience for our students by supporting program enhance-ments across the board, including tech-nology upgrades, our no-cut sports policy, fan buses, and financial aid.

Parent Council Fundraising Activities

At University Prep we believe that a cultur-ally rich and inclusive school community provides students with the best possible environment for a quality education.

To us, diversity and inclusivity is not an addendum; it is embodied in all facets of our school. We are committed to edu-cating a student population with a wide array of economic backgrounds, races, ethnicities, cultures, family dynamics, sexual orientations, physical abilities and learning styles.

At University Prep, community means that we do not simply admit students, we admit families; our parent body partners with our faculty and staff to ensure the success of their students and the institution. We are also committed to recruiting and sustain-ing a faculty and staff who reflect a broad definition of diversity and who exemplify and impart to our students the skills of collaboration, the willingness to engage in respectful dialogue, and the value of trust.

Community

The 2013-2014 Parent Council held the “Vintage Verve” Auction in March at the Four Seasons Seattle. This event netted $258,000 for University Prep. Of those funds, $36,500 was allocated for the Parent Council budget to sponsor activities such as faculty/staff lunches, parent education, and refreshments for the many ongoing campus activities. The remaining $79,000 was allo-cated for the school’s operating budget.

This money is used to enhance every aspect of University Prep and benefits every student on campus.

The Annual Fund-A-Need raised $143,000 and was designated for the Erica and Nason Hamlin Endowed Scholarship Fund, which will benefit students in need of financial aid with first priority given to Rainier Scholars.
