The Empire, Coventry v1_0 Coventry's live music venue, The Empire, opened its doors at the beginning of October 2015, occupying a former snooker hall which had most recently housed Coventry Student Union's bar 'Hush'. Behind the project were Venue Directors Phil Rooney, Rich Taylor, David MacDonald and Tom Clarke, front man for Coventry based band 'The Enemy.' Their aim was to develop a live venue that could host the best of alternative rock bands, musicians and DJs, helping to put the city's nightlife scene back on the map. Phil Rooney realised that to attract top quality events the venue needed a rider friendly high end audio system that would impress the visiting artists and engineers and most importantly the paying public. The Empire's technical manager and Enemy FOH engineer Rich Taylor has a long term relationship with SSE Audio and recommended the company to Phil Rooney. Phil first contacted SSE Sales Director Alex Penn about the project in August 2015 and from initial discussions Alex advised that an ex-hire package could be supplied. A used L-Acoustics DV-DOSC system would provide the credibility and audio quality they required and it could be supplied on a contract rental basis with fixed monthly costs and no large capital outlay. Using L-Acoustics SOUNDVISION SSE designed a system that would provide the SPL levels the venue required. The software ensured that any potential dead spots were covered by infill, providing even coverage throughout the room. The final design comprised L-R hangs of 6 xDVDOSC and a DVSUB per side with 4 x SB28 subs ground stacked in front of the stage apron. L-Acoustics 12XTs provided the front and balcony infills. SSE has supplied and installed a completesystem in the venue including digitalconsoles and a monitor package. Consoleof choice at Front of House for technicalmanager Rich Taylor was a Soundcraft Vi6while on stage a Yamah M7CL-48 wasspecified for control of a Meyer SoundPSM monitor package.
Time scales were extremely tight for SSE,with final confirmation for the work to goahead in early September and the clubdue to open on 2nd October. Since theopening night the venue has provenextremely popular, including hosting a sellout home city gig for Tom Clarke's bandThe Enemy.
Director Phil Rooney is delighted with theinstallation, "From the very first meetingSSE had a can do approach to our tightfinancial budgets and even tighter timelines. I was concerned that the cost of theDV-DOSC system would be prohibitive,however Alex crunched the numbers andwith a mix of new and old kit managed togive our tech team the system theydesired. We have had nothing butcompliments from the acts that haveperformed for us - I would highlyrecommend that any venue looking toinstall a quality system talks to SSE, theygave us a Rolls Royce on BMW money -We couldn’t be happier."
