The global market for Telehealth is growing fast. By April 2021, the NHS has mandated as part of its Long Term Plan that all Practices will be required to have a remote live consult capability which patients can access. The NHS is predicting there will be about 30 million video consultations per year by 2024.

Supported Health, part of the Supported Business Group, have developed their Live Consult video 1-2-1 solution for the public and private health sectors, enabling easy to use remote consultations via voice, video and instant messaging.

With no disruption to Practices, it’s designed to drop into existing operations with minimal friction and offers considerable benefits to Practices in terms of efficiency and savings. For the patient it’s a very convenient new option to receive a confidential consultation.

“Digital solutions should be used in every GP Practice”

The GP Partnership Review argues that digital solutions could help support GPs and others ‘in their roles and career choices’ and that this must include mobile working solutions.

For example, smartphones enable real-time video consultations and, if used appropriately, can help both the patient and the GP. Additionally, tablets can enable clinicians to remotely access and input into electronic patient health records.

“By 2024 up to 30 million outpatient appointments will be undertaken virtually”

With broadband speeds improving significantly over the past few years and being placed on NHS Practices and Hospitals to handle more face to face appointments, remote video consultations need to be seriously considered given the greater availability of video streaming technology.

This will not only present greater efficiencies and cost savings to the Practices and Hospitals, but also provide better service to patients, who do not necessarily have the time to travel to make an appointment, and then wait further time for the GP or consultant to see them. With the average wait to see a GP now being around two weeks, they could also get to see a GP more quickly. If a patient is looking for a quick symptom diagnosis or a routine follow up appointment, surely a video call is the answer.

Live Consult is designed to slip into the normal day to day operations of a busy Practice / Hospital Reception – it’s not designed to take your patients away to another Practice or disrupt the usual GP Practice funding model.

The Live Consult solution uses WebRTC, a much used streaming standard, and is fully scalable. It works on most popular browsers, meaning there’s no need to install software, and it’s secure – meeting stringent US standards including HIPAA, BAA and Safeharbor regulations. All sessions are recorded and stored on Amazon Web Services (AWS) in full-colour HD and encrypted up to AES-256 format.

The solution is designed to be easy for a patient or Practitioner to use in just four simple steps.

HOW IT WORKS

Accessible via desktop, tablet and mobile You can use Live Consult via your desktop computer, a tablet or even your smartphone. Our solution is fully responsive.

What’s more, our solution takes advantage of cloud-based technology meaning there’s no additional hardware or software required.

Book an appointment straight from our app In Summer 2020 we will release a native app to provide further convenience for patients and enhance patient communications by using push notifications.

HOW THE SERVICE COULD BE USED

Live Consult has been designed to be easy to put into practice, with minimal training of specialists. The solution can be further customised as it has been scoped from the outset to be used in different types of deployment – in a GP Practice, NHS Hospital Clinic set up, or to even to provide live remote or in bureau counselling. The solution also allows for ease of connectivity to legacy platforms and supports interoperability through APIs.

A strong and reliable broadband connection is required at the Practice, with equally fast upload and download speed available. We recommend an 8Mb or above connection (the service performs a simple speed test on the first use of the platform before the session begins, for both the doctor and patient).

WHAT A PRACTICE NEEDS TO GET READY

Discuss with your team which staff members of your Practice will be providing live 1-2-1 advice to your patients and who will be set up on our Live Consult gateway.
