And so it began…Global Angel Charitable Organization was founded by the

Courneyea family of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, in memory of their daughter Carole who passed away at the age of twenty-two after a brief battle with leukemia.

The charity is a fitting tribute to Carole whose passionate vision in life was to complete her nursing studies and work in the medical flight environment. Not only did Carole cherish life, but she was an avid volunteer throughout her short, but fulfilling, life. During the course of Carole’s treatments, she also required medical transportation both provincially and internationally. She and her family had first-hand knowledge of the issues that can arise when this is a necessary part of patient care.

Global Angel is committed to providing support for medical transportation to those in need of treatment, repatriation as well as benevolent needs regardless of financial status.

The Journey Begins…A registered charity is an organization established and

operated for charitable purposes and must devote its resources to charitable activities. To register as a charity, the organization has to be either incorporated or governed by a legal document called a trust or constitution.

There had been many rules and regulations required for them toaccomplish their plan, but they jumped through every hoopand, in the end, became a nationally recognized charitywith their own Charitable Registration Number. Now the work could begin.

So, the legal documents were done, a board of directors was elected and volunteers came forward…

…finally they could concentrate on their mission.

What were the issues?In Canada, out of province medical transportation is not

covered by provincial health insurance. The financial burden for this transport falls to families and friends and in many cases determines whether their loved one will receive life-saving treatment or, in some cases, if they will be able to get home to spend their last moments surrounded by the support of those that care the most. This also comes into play when travellers become ill or injured outside of their country or province. This is not the time patients and their families should feel the stress of trying to find the financial means necessary to find solutions.

Thanks to Carole’s passion and her family’s vision, help became available through Global Angel Charitable Organization.

Why was there a need?It is hard to imagine that In 2012 in Canada, where our

tradition is equal access to health care, there are Canadians at home and abroad who are unable to receive medical treatment or return home from hospital due to the prohibitive cost of ambulance transport.

Regrettably, the reverse is also true of travellers visiting Canada. Many times when visitors to Canada become ill or injured, they are placed in a Canadian hospital and all too frequently lack the financial resources to return home by air ambulance or commercial flight. It is possible that they will remain for extended periods of time in Canadian hospital beds, having to pay for all medical costs and hoping at some point they will be able to return home to recover surrounded by their family and friends. In turn, this can also create a shortage of hospital beds for Canadians waiting for treatment or to return to a hospital in Canada.

Doesn’t our healthcare pay for that? A medically escorted trip to or from Canada by air ambulance

may cost several thousands of dollars or more, and the cost of all ambulances (whether air or land) outside of your province of residence is the responsibility of the ill/injured person and their family.

Due to limited availability of critical medical services across the country, you could be flown to a hospital outside of your province or even at a distance from your home. Then, when you are ready to be returned home or to a hospital near home, you are responsible for arranging and paying for the flight home.

This is when we step in…Since 2007, Global Angel Charitable Organization has provided

financial assistance and the coordination for air ambulance and air medical transportation for Canadians at home and abroadwho are unable to receive medical treatment or returnhome from the hospital due to the prohibitive cost ofambulance transport . The charity also helps people whorequire treatment available only outside their province or country.

Global Angel is committed to providing support formedical transportation to those in need of treatment,repatriation as well as benevolent needs regardless offinancial status, age, race, religion etc…we are hereto help.

Why should you help?When accident, illness, or injury happens or when another

natural or man-made disaster strikes, it could be your family member, an employee, a friend, a neighbour, a stranger, or a child who requires immediate medical care and air ambulance transport to save their life. Can you imagine how helpless you would feel?

Where does the money come from? Charitable organizations have

various ways to generate revenue for sustaining their causes. Global Angel Charity raises much needed funding through the collective efforts of our Volunteers who organize and host “Ladies Spa Night”; silent auctions and licensed raffles; performances by local bands; fundraising and donations from people previously helped by the charity.

Global Angel Charity also accepts private donations, grants and Corporate donations.

All of these things also require the help of volunteers and many donations of prizes and supplies for the events.

Making a DifferenceThe World has become a selfish place where blessings are seldom counted and random acts of kindness run the gauntlet of extinction. We go about our busy, withdrawn and material lives with little regard for our fellow human beings.
