µ Consortium for Educational
communication (CEC), UGC was
awarded the project for the MOOCs
compliant E-content creation by the
Minis t ry of Human Resource
Development. The project funds were
sanctioned under the central sanction
scheme of Massive Open Online
Courses (MOOCs) on the approval of
the Standing finance committee. CEC
has started the project work and is
preparing to launch 25 MOOCs
courses as per the committed
deadlines. The MOOCs will be
created by associating the best
available Instructors and teachers and
by repurposing the existing E-content
which was developed by CEC and its
21 Media centers by following the
four quadrant pedagogical approach
of digital education.

A 5-day workshop on “Research Methodology and Data Analysis through SPSS and
EViews” was organized by the Research Unit of CEC from 27th January to 31st January
2016 at CEC, New Delhi as an effort to improve the quality and broaden horizon of
research endeavor at CEC and its media centers The participants from CEC and its
EMRCs (Educational Multimedia Research Centers) across the country came together
for the week-long research quality enhancing exercise. Prof. Rajbir Singh inaugurated
the workshop and welcomed the resource persons and the participants by presenting
them bouquets. In his inaugural address, he emphasized that there is a need for the
contemporary research tradition at CEC to look beyond mere surveys and that we should
think about the possibility of using both quantitative and qualitative approaches
effectively. He also emphasized the need for producing multimedia educational content
that is supplemented and guided by relevant and rigorous research. The Director, CEC
appreciated the efforts of the research unit at CEC in organizing the much needed
research workshop.
The workshop premièred with Prof. Suresh Aggarwal, Department of Business
Economics, University of Delhi explaining conceptual elements of research
methodology and design. For the subsequent days of the workshop Dr. Prabhat Mittal,
Assistant Professor, Satyawati College, University of Delhi provided hands on training
on SPSS to participants using Case Studies and data sets while at the same time
explaining theoretical approaches behind it. Participants during practice sessions also
worked on data sets on Eviews – a well regarded econometrics software. On valedictory
day of the workshop, individual queries from participants regarding their ongoing or
planned research projects were discussed and commented upon. The workshop which
was well received by the participants offered a fruitful engagement to researchers of
CEC and other media centers.

BRIEF NEWS
Media and Education 3
Our Activities 4
Dear friends,
We are taking strides in creating Information superhighways which shall make India a
frontrunner in creating a digital architecture of educational content and delivery
mechanisms. Technology has provided us a unique chance of bringing those at margins
of both education and society closer to the center by ensuring its universal and
equitable access. Though there might be some initial challenges regarding adoption of
digital learning practices as they require a learning curve both for teachers and
learners. We at CEC recognize this challenge and are actively working towards developing training modules
for teachers so that they are familiar with new age multimedia content. Since training teachers can be an
excellent way of enriching human resource and consequently the raising of bar in quality of our education, for
this end, orientation and training workshops are being envisaged for teachers and trainers. As internet
penetration in India expands, digital resources transcending social or geographical barriers of our country will
become a preferred mode of learning. This will not only help learners acquire knowledge but also gain ICT
skills in the process that will help their careers immensely in the knowledge economy. As Academic-
Entrepreneur Matthew Pittinsky put very aptly put it, 'We live in a knowledge economy where the value of
education plays a large role in determining one's life chances.' The knowledge is going to be the key
determinant of a society's future in the era of knowledge society and no society can afford to ignore it. It is a
matter of great pride that CEC is one of the few leaders in the field of
providing futuristic digital educational content which is set to change the way
not only we learn but also how a civilization progresses.

Media & Education
"Media study does not replace text. It broadens and deepens our understanding of texts."
- Philip M. Anderson, "Visual & Verbal Thinking" in Media Literacy, A Reader
This quote is well evidenced by the fact that whereas a text delivers an idea in a linear two dimensional way, media
conveys it in a dimension which is multi faceted. For complete learning and cognitive development, it is a necessity to
take forward media and education together as a combination in contemporary time and who better then a educator can
do this task .It is for this that at the dawn of “third age of language” (Bell,2009) a term that has been aptly used ,it
becomes imperative to engage in lifelong learning for an educator. This can best be achieved through media education as
well as conveyed in the same manner to the masses. The teacher can bring together a set of ideas, thoughts, experiments
and by the usage of innovative technology deliver it to the youth for better comprehension. The role played by the
teacher is critical as she/he plays a significant medium to deliver the education through media platform . Education
through media often combine various forms of communication–visual images (still or moving), audio (sound, music or
speech) and written language. This multiple approach should be utilized to explore new domains of education.
In current digital times where technology is fast evolving ,touching new arenas and transgressing untouched boundaries
,it has become a common trend to refer to the digital world .It is this opportunity which should not be left unexplored
and it is here that teachers ,experts can play a significant role in conveying education through a means which is highly
competent and creative at the same time. This very technology of delivering ideas of education will aid in the overall
learning and growth of the youth. It will provide the learner new ways of looking at themes, topics, areas which will
further enhance the learners understanding and contribute extensively in giving him the clarity concerning it which was
missing or incomplete till now. However ,one should be cautious when attempting to disseminate knowledge through
this medium as excessive and uncalculated spread of education can be uncomfortable and often impossible for a
student/learner to grasp . Therefore ,efforts should be made to deliver education in a coordinated, simplistic manner
blended with textbooks studies . Moreover, we still need to do a lot on the digital front as India ranks an abysmal 131 out
of 167 nations on ICT Development Index (IDI) that measures the level of information and communication technology
access as revealed by UN International Telecommunications Union's (ITU). Further, even the recent annual World
Development Report on Digital Dividends stated that 60% of the world population was still offline . In this scenario
,one should not miss the opportunity to take advantage of the digital age that we are experiencing and utilize it
completely upto its full potential at CEC. No wonder , Douglas Engelbart had once famously stated “The digital
revolution is far more significant than the invention of writing or even of printing.”

When we drop a stone in a still pond or when we move one
end of a tied rope up and down we see waves propagating in
the respective media. These are essentially transverse
motions even though the pulses are seen to travel
longitudinally. The simplest of transverse motions is the
simple harmonic motion, which is first defined and
demonstrated by a spring-man system. The mathematical
derivatives of the sinusoidal displacement function is
presented and the effects of various parameters are
demonstrated through computer graphics. It is shown, how
the beats can occur. Complex motions which are the result
of interaction of different harmonic motions are also
discussed.

Chemical clock reaction is an experiment wherein you get a
flash of blue color from colorless solutions after a time lag.
Potassium per sulfate reacts with potassium iodide to give
iodine which is consumed by sodium thiosulfate (hypo)
taken in low concentration and due to the presence of starch
indicator a flash of blue color appears after 30-35 secs when
all the hypo is consumed. The reactions are explained and
the utility of a clock to monitor the reaction rates clearly
demonstrated.
