Good luck to Sam as he takes on the state’s best athletes at the PSSA State athletics Championships at Homebush. We know Sam will represent his school and community with pride and good sportsmanship. Welcome back Mrs McGrath who has been filling in as Relieving Principal at Tilba Public School. Mrs McGrath has had the opportunity to add valuable leadership experience to her resume, which will support both her and Wolumla PS in the future. Congratulations to the Myhill family on the birth of Willow. The Myhill’s are now a family of six and we wish them all the best on the arrival of their precious new gift. Our gym program has begun on Thursdays and it is wonderful to see all of our students engaged in learning more about gymnastics. Please join me in urging students to take care when ‘practicing’ what they know to ensure that it is done properly and safely. Next Monday is the inaugural ‘Film By’ short film festival and is being held at the Picture Show Man cinema in Merimbula. Our students have been working hard to finalise their entries and ready to submit them. Good luck to all of our aspiring film makers. As the days heat up coming up to summer I want to urge everyone to encourage students to look after their skin and make sure they wear a hat and have plenty of water to drink. I also encourage students to wear sunglasses and sunscreen when playing outdoors.
Term 4 is now well underway and we are looking forward to a busy few months as we begin to prepare for 2019.

Class 1/2 This term, our integrated theme unit is 'shelters'. We are learning how shelters are made, who needs shelter and why do we need shelters? This week we have learnt about natural materials. We went on a 'natural materials scavenger hunt' and collected a range of materials which we used to construct a 'bug shelter'. Students worked together and shared ideas to create a bug village.
Behind the scene: Integrated units are an exciting, multi-disciplinary teaching method. They are developed by combining syllabus content and concepts from across multiple KLA's (Key Learning Areas). Children engage in a variety of learning experiences to help them connect to content in a meaningful and relevant way. This is an example of how our unit this term will cover the curriculum. HSIE- Understanding environments, people, needs of living things, comparing and contrasting natural built features English- Writing, descriptions, labelling, research, reading, information texts, procedures, reports, recounts Maths- 3D shapes, models, grouping PDH- positive relationships, individual choices, rights and responsibilities History- comparing dwellings from the past to today Creative and Performing Arts- music, drama, dance, art exploration relating to the theme Science/Tech- features of environment, natural/man-made materials

Class 1/2 Thursdays and Fridays with Ms McGrath On Thursdays, students are exploring natural, made and managed features that undergo change in a science unit called ‘Up, down and all around’. They will have the opportunity to make outdoor observations and photographic records, children will in-vestigate the daily, weekly and seasonal changes in their local environment.
Sport on Thursdays this term involves specialised gymnastics classes with Zoe from Eden Area Gymnastics. Gymnastics is a great sport that strengthens muscles and improves flexibility, it also gives children the opportunity to focus on technique rather than competing. We are lucky to have such an engaging and knowledgeable teacher in Zoe. In Week 6 we will begin our two week intensive swimming and water safety program.
In personal development lessons this term we will be working on building positive social skills that enable children to take active roles in the creation of a positive social environment, which encourages kindness, compassion and responsibility. This theme will also be investigated through our rich text study of ‘A boy called Bat’. Students will use a variety of skills and strategies, including knowledge of text structure, context, grammar, punctuation, and word usage, to make connections between texts and between their own experiences and information in the texts.
On Thursdays and Fridays during measurement and geometry students will be engaged in a range of activities that will see students estimating, measuring, comparing and recording using informal units for length, area, volume, capacity and mass. They will learn about the need for formal units of length and use metre and centimetre to measure length and distance. Children will use informal units to compare and order the duration of events and tell the time on the half- and quarter-hour. They will identify, describe, sort and model three-dimensional objects and two-dimensional shapes. Measurement and geometry activities will be hands-on and at times outside the classroom.

Have your say on diabetes in schools Diabetes Australia is currently leading consultation to develop a national program to better support kids with type 1 diabetes in schools. The new nationally consistent training program for teachers and school staff will be targeted at every school with a student with type 1 diabetes and this will cover the safe administration of insulin, hypogly-cemia (low blood glucose level) management, and ‘normalising’ diabetes in schools so the students are not stigmatised. The program will also clarify the legal framework for diabetes management in schools and resolve any confusion over who can train school staff, and which school staff should be trained. To ensure the new program meets the needs of schools, students and parents, and builds on all the good work already happening, we want to hear from you about what works and what needs to be im-proved.
