Thank You The students, faculty, and staff of the Congdon School

thank you for joining us today.
This service is to honor our donors for their
generous gift of preparing our future health care

Anatomy Teacher
When I touched your hands, I touched hands that had felt the chill of 94 winters,
fingers that had stretched in the sunlight of as many springs.
When I touched your feet, I touched feet that had walked the paths of nine decades,
toes curling and uncurling through the uncertainty of five wars.
When I touched your arms, I touched the arms that had braced you from and embraced the world,
a world I know only through historians and faded photographs.
When I stared into the shell of your eyes, I saw the screen upon which a million irreplaceable scenes had been played,
visions of a world rapidly changing, at once both like and unlike my own.
When I held your heart in my hands, in a moment filled with awe and grace, I held a heart whose mysteries I will never know,
a heart that gave me the gift of itself.
When you invited me to know you, to be a guest in the house that your spirit left,
to touch your body more intimately than any lover could, you forever altered my life.
My feet, with the knowledge of yours,
will walk into the future carrying you with me.
My hands, as they reach out to comfort and heal, will do so never forgetting the delicacy of yours.
My eyes, as they sweep across the landscapes of my future,
will find in it reflections of the world I saw as yours.
My heart, in the rhythm of its beating, will carry with it the stillness and wonder of your heart,
lying silent in my hands.

Knowing You I do not know all the paths you chose to walk down in life, but I have felt the fibers of all the muscles that carried you there.
I do not know what made your heart burst with love, but I have pictured how the blood flowed through the four chambers of your heart.
I do not know what life dreams you had, but I have traced your nerves to see how it was possible for your brain to realize them.
I do not know what moments in your life made you sigh with relief or in des-pair, but I have touched the lungs that held your breath.
I do not know the many hands you lovingly held in yours, but I have felt the strength of each of your fingers.
I do not know all the burdens you carried on your shoulders, but I have cut through the tension you carried there.
I do not know the beauty and brokenness you witnessed in your lifetime, but I have seen how you were able to see the world.
I do not know what nourished and nurtured you, but I have met all the or-gans that worked hard to sustain you.
I do not know the children you gave life to, but I have been awed by the in-ner workings of your womb.
I do not know how many times your heart was broken, but I have uncovered the sac that housed your tears.
I do not know the lovers who knew you so well, but I have come to know all the layers and spaces of your body.
I do not know your name, but before you left you gave me permission to uncover the miracle of the human body through you.
You gave me the gift of knowing you.
