2018 saw the lowest ever recorded annual figure for fatalities and fatality figures for
this year are slightly ahead of those for 2018.
We are seeing some increase among Driver fatalities. This contrasts with previous
years where the increase was most felt among vulnerable road users. Seventeen more
drivers were killed on our roads this year compared to last year.
Current Trends – Road Fatal Collisions
“Keep your loved ones safe by keeping our roads safe”
• In last year’s DUI campaign there were almost 1,050 drivers arrested on suspicion of DUI (alcohol/ drugs)*.
• Last Christmas Day there were 11 DUI arrests • Last New Year’s Eve/ Day there were 82 DUI arrests
• An Garda Síochána's Christmas campaign will focus on Driving While Intoxicated
• The campaign will run every day from now up to Christmas and into the New Year
• This campaign will see an increase in enforcement in terms of Checkpoints and MIT Checkpoints
An Garda Síochána Christmas Campaign Driving While Intoxicated
The increase in enforcement can be attributed to the following:
• Introduction of the Road Traffic Act 2016 (13th April 2017)
• The Drager 5000, leading to greater detections of drug driving
• Introduction of the Drager 7510 (upgraded instruments)
• Clancy Amendment ( Roads Traffic Amendment Act 2018)
• Focus on the Performance of Roads Policing Members

• It should be noted that we are noticing a sharp decrease in the number of people detected for DWI who are
just over the limit and qualify for fixed charge notice.
• Year-to-date arrests have been in excess of those for the corresponding period in 2017 and 2018. October
saw the highest number of monthly arrests so far this year – the highest figures recorded since April 2017.
Drug-Driving offences have more than doubled year-to-date.
• Figures from the Medical Bureau of Road Safety state that Blood and Urine samples have increased by 40%
in 2019 over 2018
