Future Leaders Want Your Advice Executives have a profound influence on leaders they grow. You have a wealth of experience. Your insights are wisdom. When you share them, they learn from you. They grow and do better, fulfilling their potential to succeed.

And Practical Tools that Work And in addition to experience, your future leaders will not succeed without leadership skills that work.

That’s why this guide gives them to you – so you can pass them on to your team.

It’s An Executive Priority Without future leaders, you can’t achieve your vision of success. Developing leaders is an executive priority, not just an HR role.

And, So Does Your Company Every company needs new leaders: the experienced retire, the good ones get promoted and new positions arise. The need for leaders is constant.

You Need a Pipeline The external shortage means the leaders you need are already inside your company.

That’s why your leadership pipeline needs to be healthy.

With Experience and Ability Experience is good – but not without ability.

‘Does he have 17 years experience or 1 year of experience 17 times?’

The World Needs Leaders The No. 1 human capital requirement of corporate organisations is the need for leaders - at every level, in every function and in all regions of the world (Deloitte, 2014).

DEMAND FOR SENIOR LEADERS

DEMAND FOR LEADERS

In Your Company Your company’s need for leaders may be greater than you think. The charts show how to calculate it.

With modest assumptions for retirement, turnover and growth in this example, the charts show the demand for leaders over the next 5 years in a 50,000 employee company.

Despite modest assumptions, in the next five years, this company needs 2,465 leaders!

What’s Your Gap? So, how big is the gap in your company?

Showing your company’s need for leaders like this, engages your executive team.

A Development Imperative With a shortage of leaders everywhere else, developing leaders internally will be critical to your vision of success.

It’s a strategic priority.

It’s a Capability Gap, Too It’s not just about numbers. It’s about capability, too.

And that’s why executives play a bigger part in developing leaders than HR ever will.

It’s Their Problem, Too You can’t do this alone – you shouldn’t.

At every level, leaders are accountable for succession. So, this leadership challenge – like other strategic issues – is better shared.

Call to Action Developing future leaders rarely feels urgent. In reality, it’s something to do, every day.

Focus Attention When leaders know they need a successor for each key role in their team, they focus attention on it.

How do Leaders Grow? Leaders grow most from real job experience, least from the courses they attend.

When you consider where we typically invest our effort, it’s understandable to ask, ‘How can we get more growth from real job experience?’

4 Know how they grow

A Guiding Principle Research like this helped shape the guideline that 70% of development comes from the job itself, 20% from coaching and mentoring and just 10% from formal training.

Training still counts. Top companies for leadership say they rely on it. But on the job experience supported by coaching is where leaders can help.

So, What’s your role? In a nutshell: identify what your future leaders need, give them assignments that require it and support them with coaching.

And keep going until you can confidently say, ‘Ready Now’ for a succession plan.

Some won’t make it. Others will.

A Hard Core of Leadership Skills Strip back the many good leadership ideas to find the hard core of skills that all leaders should have.

If your leaders cannot read the context, be self-aware, coach, give feedback, anticipate the future and lead change, they will not deliver results.

These are the skills that last a leadership lifetime.

Leadership is personal. These skills will help leaders clarify, confirm and feel confident in who they are and where they’re going.

However big or small, teams need guidance and want to be involved. These skills help leaders build high performing teams.

Achieving success is rewarding but impossible if you can’t get things done, solve problems, anticipate the future and lead change.
