There cannot be a more quintessential style ofwindow. Simple in design, elegant in proportion, sashwindows remain the most beautiful and efficientstyle of window ever created.

First introduced in the mid 1600’s this evocative style soonbecame very fashionable. Rich merchants would buildgrand town houses and stately mansions to display theirwealth to their peers. The larger the glazed area thewealthier they were.

Replacement of windows was prevalent even in the 18thcentury. Glorious new sash windows replaced casementwindows in 16th century properties.

However, since the 1960’s the indiscriminate replacementof sash windows using mass-produced aluminum, PVC-Uand even mass produced softwood timber windows hasmeant that thousands of sash windows have been lost,destroying the character and value of many properties inthe process.

Yet this style of window remains the most efficient everinvented, as it removes stale air and induces convectionlike no other window style can.

The Great FireSash windows are probably responsible forshaping the architecture of many buildingsfollowing the great fire of 1666.

Soon after the fire, London changed its BuildingRegulations to prevent the spread of fire in thefuture as the many timber signs, beams andwindows accelerated the spread of the fire.

These regulations required window frames tobe recessed back from the front of a buildingsfacade, which gave birth to the Georgianarchitectural style.

The Bygone Collection is dedicated to creatingbeautiful sash windows; Ones which capture thespirit of three hundred years of sash history.

A window made from modern materials such as PVC-Umay seem to fly in the face of that ambition, howevertoday more and more conservation officers and planninginspectors are being convinced by Bygone sash windowsbecause of their looks, but also because they can exceedthe new demands of energy efficiency, security and recycleability.

Conservation Officers have a duty to retain the characterof buildings, so it is entirely natural that they want to keepeverything as it is.

When most hear the words PVC-U they instinctively thinkof the thousands of casement windows that many ownershad installed when double glazing first became popular inthe early 1980’s. Many buildings have been disfigured byinappropriate replacements, that have damaged the charmand character of the property.

“Unlike many other PVC-U imitations of sash windows,which pay only superficial attention to traditional detailing,the mouldings on the frame of the unit, which also extendsto the central glazing bars, appears most authentic”.

So authentic is the effect that a senior planner (buildinghis own house) standing just feet away from a Bygone sashwindow actually said, “I don’t want timber - I want aPVC-U sash window”, he couldn’t believe his eyes seeingour white acrylic timber finish.

Bygone sash windows have been installed in conservationareas, national parks, a World Heritage site in Conwy,buildings with an article 4 directive and even some grade 2listed buildings.

On occasion timber sash windows are the only acceptedreplacement material. The Bygone Collection can providethese too with enhanced thermal efficiency and greatersecurity than the original sashes.

Authentic for any periodWe’ve taken the time to study original sashwindows and to recreate the criticallyimportant details.

Details like the internal and external staff bead,continuous “one piece” horns, authentic deepbottom rails and developing a “timber” acrylicfinish, grained to look just like “freshly painted,gloss white, timber sash windows”

On our PVC-U window a patented infil stripremoves over 50% of the surplus (andunsightly) brush pile making its easier toslide the windows, whilst the remainingbrush pile can be hidden behind anotherpatented product, the internal staff beadtrim….ask to see these features close up, it’swhat makes the difference.

This careful attention to detail is why somany Conservation Officers and planners arebeing won over by The Bygone Collection ofsash windows.

In the days of open log fires and heavy drapes the draughts around sash windows were of little concern.

As a result early sash windows with their thin single panesof glass were lightweight and operated effortlessly, butrattled around within the frame, allowing in unwanted“ventilation” and noise.

Today’s Building Regulations and clients require muchmore from sash windows, such as energy efficiency, soundproofing, toughened or laminated safety glass, highsecurity standards, easy clean facility*, low maintenanceand much, much more.

Traditional Appearance - clean vertical lines

Many sash replacements spoil the character, charm and feelof homes because they are not balanced. Its hard to describebut cheap double glazing or inappropriate window stylessimply destroy the aesthetics (and value) of properties.

Replacing the entire window, not cutting corners byleaving the old frames in situ, guarantees the character willremain in tact. The shadow lines are retained, the recessedoffset sashes recreate the charm that properties with sashwindows are renowned for.

Clean glass sight lines through both uppper and lowersashes are critical in achieving the historical appearance.

Georgian eraThe Georgian era is perhaps the most elegantof periods for sash windows.

In the late 1600’s and early 1700’s the classic“6 over 6” window became the norm withwindows getting larger and larger throughoutthe 1700’s – although still with small panes asdictated by the glass manufacturingtechniques of the time.

Authentic Appearance - Continuous HornsThe Victorians introduced horns in the 1850’s to prevent thesash weights from damaging window frames as sash windowsgained extra weight from thicker and heavier plate glass.

Today’s window manufacturers are happy to just mimic thisimportant original feature by sticking on, “replica” horns.This is one of the many “artificial” details planners find most objectionable.

Not anymore. Bygone sash windows have integratedcontinuous horns, which are so essential to achieving a trulyauthentic appearance.

Authentic Appearance - Deep Bottom RailTraditionally the bottom rail on the lower sash was fardeeper than it’s side members, constructed from 4 or 5 inchtimbers the lower rail carried most of the sash weight.

Of course, it is far easier and cheaper for manufacturers toweld sashes without this important feature, but thissimplistic approach destroys the authentic appearance andelegant sight lines of the original sash windows.

Bygone windows are uniquely constructed with deepbottom rails as standard to maintain this crucialappearance detail, which is so important to retaining thelook and value of your home.

Unique design – Traditional Bespoke Cam CatchesCam catches are a weak part on any sash window and were easily opened by unwelcome visitors. Unable to findstrong cam catches, and needing to meet the Secured byDesign criteria, Bygone have specially developed solidlocking catches, secured directly into steel reinforcing within the sash.

Uniquely, on larger windows (where two cams are needed),opposite handed cam catches are used. This unique featureprevents the frame being forced to one side to gain entry.

Bygone cam catches even have a nylon insert to preventmetal against metal wear to ensure that cams stay inperfect condition.

Unique Design – Simple, Effective, Limit StopsLimit stops are devices that prevent a window being openedbeyond 100mm initially, particularly important when youhave young children to keep safe.

When Limit Stops are requested on a Bygone window wewill always fit a pair. Fitting only one would cause the lowersash to twist out of square over time.

Sash Windows - the most efficient style ofwindow for ventilationBy opening both upper and lower sashes thecooler air coming through the window sinks to the floor and forces the lighter, warmer,moisture laden air up towards the ceiling and out through the upper sash opening.

Authentic Appearance - White Painted Timber EffectBygone offer an authentic grained effect which creates astunning painted wood appearance with the lowmaintenance and longevity of PVC-u.

So convincing is this effect that one planner, building his ownhome, and standing only a few feet from the window, couldnot believe that he really was looking at a PVC-u product.

It has been hard to get close to the original white paintedtimber appearance of original sash windows with modernlow maintenance materials. Until now that is.

Unique design – Surface mounted, bonded external Georgian barsThe Georgian bars that create each pane are crucial to theauthentic look of a sash window. Only one thing achievesthat result – authentically shaped, securely fixed, surfacemounted external glazing bars.

Bygone sash windows have external bonded bars as standard,which add a third dimension to your windows, protrudingfrom the surface of the glass the way the muntin bars did onthe originals creating depth, character and shadow lines.

The Bygone Collection uses a patented method ofinterlocking the Georgian bars together before clamping

them to the glass with a Georgi ClipTM. Bygone sashwindow bars are guaranteed to stay firmly attached - even when they are used to open the windows!

Unique Design – Torso BalancesBalances are an extremely importantcomponent of a sash window. They’re theengine, they provide extra assistance to makeit easier to open and close heavy sashes.

TORSO balances are guaranteed to open and close for atleast fifty thousand cycles, that is three times per day, every dayfor the next fifty years. That is why we fit them as standard.

Unique Design - Tilt RestrictorsCleaning Bygone sash windows is safe and easy, theserestrictors are fitted as standard. Unlike many other sashwindows, the unique dual tilt restrictors on a Bygone windowmeans each sash can be tilted back, at the perfect angle foreasy and safe cleaning from the inside of your home.

White woodgrain windowsThe industrious Victorian era perfected glassproduction techniques, enabling larger panesof glass to be produced. Consequently theywere able to create far larger sash windows,with larger panes of glass and often just asingle glazing bar.

The 1880’s saw the revival of Queen Anne style(marginal pane glazing bars), which becameestablished as “the” design right through tothe early 20th century.


A sash window needs to pass BS7950 before it canbe considered secure. The Bygone Collection wasthe first sash window (of any material) to pass thisnew British Standard for sash windows in 2006 and shortly after obtained the “Secured byDesign” endorsement*.

To achieve the Secure by Design endorsement Bygonesash windows were subjected to vigorous attacks, witheach corner and locking point being tested in turn. Theobjective was to weaken joints and to force an entry.

The force used during this “attack” was the equivalent offour 12 stone men hanging all their weight downward,with another one and a half men attempting to force thesash horizontally – a massive force!

Two of the critical areas however are the camcatches and keeps…

• Exclusively available to The Bygone Collection, theopposite handed cams (on larger windows) which centralisethe sashes in the frame preventing them from being forced toone side of the window, weakens it and allows easier entry.

• Solid Keeps are secured with four fixing screws. Twovertically and two horizontally into steel reinforcement tomaximise ability to resist shear forces. The majority ofkeeps on other windows are just screwed to the PVC-Ubeading, which in testing has proven to take less than 15seconds to break into!
