In September 2016 work starts on a new potash mine to the north of the townwhich will employ around 1,000 construction workers and around 800personnel from 2021.

At the same time some 9,000 new houses are being built over the next 15 years, demonstrating that Scarborough and surrounding area are on the up.

All-year-round appealSport, music, dance, food, art – you name it, Scarborough probably has a festivalfor it. The town is famous for one of the longest-running sports festivalsanywhere in the world – the annual Cricket Festival in August which bringscricket-lovers from all over the world.

It’s also a Mecca for motorcycling fans, with the internationally-famousOliver’s Mount circuit hosting events throughout the year, including the BarrySheene Road Race Festival.

The original seaside resortStunning scenery, glorious beaches, loads to do and see – is it any wonder thatpeople have been flocking to Scarborough for nearly 400 years?

Scarborough’s is a story of many ‘firsts’. The town became known as probablythe world’s first seaside resort back in the 1600s, when the health-givingproperties of the Spa waters were discovered. Bathing machines to preserveswimmers’ modesty as they took to the sea were first seen here. And by themid-1800s, with the coming of the railways and the popularity of sea bathing onthe rise, Scarborough was the venue for two of the world’s first purpose-builthotels, The Grand and The Crown.

But despite its rich history, Scarborough doesn’t live in the past. The town isconstantly innovating to keep its place as one of the most popular holidaydestinations in the UK.

Brief market history Originally, weekly markets were held on Thursdays and Saturdays. TheSaturday market was held in Princess Street (formerly known as NetherWestgate); you can still see the remains of the Old Market Cross (also known asButter Cross) near to Princess Street, formerly Low Conduit Street.Newborough was the Thursday market, where pots, glass, earthenware andmuch more were sold, with stalls occupying both sides of the street down to StHelen’s Square.

In August of 1853 the 151ft long, 111 ft wide and 43 ft high, Market Hall wasopened with great pomp and ceremony.

In the early 1900s housewives of Scarborough would visit the market everyThursday to buy fresh farm butter and eggs from farmers’ wives, who also soldflowers, curds, honey, fruits and vegetables to make some “pin money”.

The basement of the Market Hall was originally used as a bonded warehouse. In1993 it was converted into stalls now known as ‘the Vaults’. It offers units to avariety of traders, such as antiques, working crafters, artists and jewellers, andmany more specialist shops not found on the high street.

Event spaceThere is an area within the market that will be for regular visiting markets and afull programme is being worked up to cover most days of the week. In addition,a calendar of entertainment is also being developed to make the market a greatplace to visit as well as to shop.

Typical events might include:• Cooking demonstrations• Film festivals• Festival fringe events• Music• Undercover activities for wet weather in the summer• Season-related food and drink events • Celebrity events – book signings – tie-ins with actors/authors in town at

theatre/filming/festivals etc.

Market LocationThe retail heart of Scarborough is very close by to the Market Hall and offers awide range of national operators such as M&S, Debenhams, Next, Wilko’s, Bootsand WH Smith. A popular aspect of the centre is the range of small independentshops and this appeal manages to attract customers from all over the subregion. Shop vacancy rates are below the national average and the level ofvisitors to the town, combined with the strong support of the locals maintainsfootfall levels.

Perfectly placed on the main route to the seafront, the market is a magnet fortourists who increasingly love to stop off and browse for something new andunique to the area.

This attractive part of Scarborough is also a key area within something of a finefood boom currently going on, with lots of exciting, innovative and high qualitynew restaurants and cafes opening up in the vicinity. This creates exciting newopportunities for the right food offers to play a part in this new trend and be apart of a vibrant eating destination.

All of this will contribute to Scarborough Market Hall and Vaults cementing itsplace, not only as a stop-off for fresh food, but also as a great destination, forvisitors and locals, all year round.
