About the Performers

Massimo La Rosa joined The Cleveland Orchestra as principal trom-

bone in September 2007. He previously served as principal trombone

of La Fenice Opera House in Venice from 1996 to 2007. He has

performed as principal trombone with La Scala Opera House in Milan,

the Santa Cecilia Symphonic Orchestra in Rome, the Teatro Comunale

di Firenze in Florence. Mr. La Rosa has appeared as a soloist with La

Fenice Orchestra and with the Sicilian Symphonic Orchestra of Pal-

ermo. Recently, he was a guest artist at the 2009 Eastern Trombone

Workshop, where he performed as a soloist with the United States

Army Band "Pershing's Own". Born in Palermo, Sicily in 1974, Mr. La

Rosa grew up in Belmonte Mezzagno, a small town outside Palermo.

He began playing the trombone in the community band when he was 9

years old. Later, he studied trombone in Palermo with Filippo Bo-

nanno, principal trombone of the Sicilian Symphonic Orchestra. He

had additional lessons and master classes with Charles Vernon, Joseph

Alessi, Rex Martin and Jacques Mauger. Mr. La Rosa is on the trom-

bone faculty at CIM and has also presented master classes at several

American universities and conservatories including the Manhattan

School of Music, the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and

the Juilliard School.

Elizabeth DeMio is a member of the collaborative piano faculty at CIM.

She received a Bachelor of Music degree from CIM and a Master of Music

degree from the University of Michigan. Teachers have included Vitya

Vronsky and Theodore Lettvin. She is well-known as a collaborative pian-

ist, recitalist and soloist in the Cleveland area and appears in more than 100

concerts annually with local aspiring musicians. Mrs. DeMio has appeared

in tours and given master classes in several cities in the U.S., Korea and

Mexico. As a soloist, she performs often with the Trinity Cathedral Cham-

ber Orchestra, a group in Cleveland following the tradition of daytime con-

certs in the great cathedrals of London. With them, she has performed 20

Mozart concerti and the five Beethoven concerti, as well as Schumann,

Mendelssohn, Ravel and others. Mrs. DeMio has appeared as soloist for the

Orquesta Sinfonica de Veracruz and the Orquesta de la UNAM in Mexico.

As a recording artist, she can be heard on the Crystal and Azica labels,

most recently with works by Samuel Adler and soon-to-be released CD

with works by Bernard Garfield, with John Clouser as soloist. In addition
