FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS
Do you have a problem involving part failure? Is your current design
robust enough to survive its application? Are you trying to optimize a
part’s shape to reduce costs? Finite Element Analysis (FEA) helps solve
these problems. With FEA you can:
Optimize new designs
Calculate stress to predict part failures
Conduct a modal analysis to make sure your part won’t fail due to
frequency resonance problems
Predict elastic instability
Sample Analysis: We verified the design of the new field joint of the
external solid rocket booster for the Space Shuttle after the Challenger
disaster. A structural analysis of Mortin Thiokol’s new field joint design
resulted in a three dimensional model of the ring assembly around the
whole rocket that showed the joint met the designed requirements.
COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) provides a way to
predict how liquids and gases flow in a given situation.
Applications include:
Flow over and under a car body
Flow around an airplane wing
Flow through internal combustion and jet engines
With more advanced CFD programs, you can do combustion analysis and
chemical reactions including electrochemistry.
The illustration is an example of the optimization of flow between the
outer ring and the interior of a helical heat exchanger. The purpose of the
analysis is to maximize the heat transfer from the gas space to the cold water space by determining the best
split of flow between the two volumes.

Software Proficiencies: ANSYS Mechanical, Fluent, CD-adapco, STAR-CCM+, SolidWorks, Maple
“My passion is creating algorithms, programs, systems or machines. Along with this passion comes an intense curiosity and ability to problem solve to make things work. I have spent most of my career as a Mechanical Engineer and Analyst designing, writing and using software for engineering application including FEA, CFD and mesh generation. This along with high level mathematics skills and a deep understanding of Finite Element Method Theory enable me to solve real world practical problems using analytic tools such as the Finite Element Method and Computation Fluid Dynamics.”

MESH GENERATION
CUSTOM ENGINEERING SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
Acorn Engineering provides customized programming functionality for your specific needs.
Sample Program: Specialized Finite Element program for
use in a Shear Skin Force Platform.
The Force Platform measures the displacements of the shear
skin as a person walks over it. The FEA program converts
those displacements into a pressure distribution under the
foot. This measuring device is being designed for use on
diabetic patients to predict foot ulcer formation before they
can cause serious foot problems.
Mesh generation is the tool needed for both FEA and CFD analyses to
make the geometric models that CFD and FEA need to calculate
results. Mesh Generation programs divide the volume in question into
lots of smaller volumes called elements (FEA) or cells (CFD).
Acorn Engineering provides mesh generation services or designs
specific mesh generation procedures.
Sample Project: Using trimmed mesher, part of CD-adapco’s Computational
Fluid Dynamics suite Star-CD, hexahedral cells are trimmed at surface
intersections allowing real-world problems to be meshed quickly and easily.
