ACCOLADES “Even though Hyundai just introduced the Equus last year, the automaker has already made some notable upgrades for 2012. A more powerful engine lives under the 2012 Equus’ hood, and Hyundai has fitted a new transmission with two additional gears. The 2012 Equus is a fine choice if you’re looking for a comfort-tuned ride and a powerful V8. Hyundai has overhauled the drivetrain for 2012, adding a more powerful engine and an updated transmission.” “The Hyundai Equus targets the Mercedes-Benz S550 and the Lexus LS 460. Yes, you read that right. Hyundai’s luxury boat… is going after some of the biggest, swankiest, priciest sedans in the land… Subjectively, the Equus doesn’t feel quite up to spec with the usual suspects from Germany, but it compares very favorably with the Lexus LS and easily overshadows the Acura RL.” “The Equus is solidly engineered, remarkably quiet and indulgently comfortable, and that’s on top of its exceptional feature content and relatively affordable price… If you’re wondering whether a value- oriented brand like Hyundai can produce a luxury car, the cabin of the Equus will put your mind at ease. Just about every luxury and convenience feature found on a premium-badge car is available, and the quality of the design and materials is first class… In a segment where vehicles can be hopelessly complex, the Equus does a good job of keeping its vast amount of technology manageable.” “In addition to providing smooth acceleration and enough power to scoot the large sedan to 60 mph in about six seconds, the potent V8 returns impressive highway mileage numbers on par with both the BMW 7 Series and the Mercedes S-Class.” “What Hyundai has created with the Equus is the most distinguished, fulfilling and desirable luxury vehicle we have driven. The quality and care taken to produce even the simplest of switches and knobs is more than required. There is a very appealing draw to a vehicle that not only gets you to your destination in style, but relaxed and with a huge smile on your face. The Equus is undoubtedly the most elegant and gratifying luxury vehicle available under $65k. You want to drive this car.” “The level of luxury for the price is completely unmatched. It’s simply unheard of.” Hyundai Equus BMW 7 Series 904 889 Audi A8 880 Porsche Panamera 877 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 876 Lexus LS 873 Segment Average 869 Jaguar XJ 867 Cadillac DTS 828 LARGE PREMIUM CAR SEGMENT RANKING Based on a 1,000-point scale, higher score indicates higher appeal.

VS. MERCEDES-BENZ S550• Lower MSRP (Signature: $59,250; Ultimate: $66,250 vs. $94,500)• 8-speed automatic transmission vs. 7-speed• Standard Pre-Collision Warning System vs. optional• Standard Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) vs. optional• Standard Continuous Damping Control (CDC) suspension vs. optional• Standard Parking Guide System (PGS) with rearview camera vs. optional• Forward-View Cornering Camera included with the Ultimate vs. not available• Standard driver seat massage system vs. optional• Standard 60/40 power reclining rear seats vs. optional• Reclining right-side rear seat with leg support, remote-operated massage system and a

Here are some of the press comments about the s550:

“Most climate functions are handled by simple buttons, but the coMANd system absorbs too many audio controls, complicating their use.”

“The COMAND electronics system uses a control knob and screen to work most entertainment and navigation functions, but the lack of physical dash buttons (like those in the E-Class) tends to complicate the operation of frequently used functions.”

“we don’t understand Mercedes’ longstanding commitment to its odd cruise-control stalk, because it doesn’t work very well.”

“Folding rear seatbacks or a trunk pass through aren’t offered. Interior storage space is disappointingly meager.”

“Trunk volume is a competitive 16.4 cubic feet. Like many top-end luxury sedans, the S-Class does not offer a folding backseat. There isn’t even a pass-through for skis, a feature a number of competitors offer.”

“An optional lane departure warning system uses cameras to detect lane markings; at higher speeds it vibrates the steering wheel should you cross over without signaling. our test car had it, and one editor found the system less effective for catching your attention than the audible chimes that go off in many competing systems.”

VS. LEXUS LS 460• Lower MSRP (Signature: $59,250; Ultimate: $66,250 vs. LS 460: $67,630; LS 460 L: $73,175 )• 12% more horsepower: 429 horsepower vs. 380 horsepower (premium fuel)• Standard rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags vs. optional• Standard Pre-Collision Warning System vs. optional• Standard Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) vs. optional on LS 460 L only; not available

rear console refrigerator on ultimate vs. similar options on the lexus cost $20,680 and are a special order

• Standard cooled front seats vs. optional• Standard heated steering wheel vs. optional• Standard rear-seat climate controls vs. optional on ls 460 l only• Standard navigation system vs. optional• Standard Smart Cruise Control vs. optional• Standard power rear sunshade vs. optional• Standard power trunk lid vs. optional• Longer standard wheelbase for a smoother ride: 119.9-inch vs. 116.9-inch• More front and rear leg room: 45.1-inch/38.9-inch vs. 43.7-inch/35.8-inch

Here are some of the press comments about the ls 460:

“LS is no sport sedan, however. The base suspension permits marked body lean, as does the air suspension’s comfort setting.”

“A smooth ride is the one of the strong points of the ls line. when it comes to being a driver’s car, however, that part of the experience is somewhat lacking. Testers have referred to this car as being numb and uninvolving.”

“the base suspension is pillowy on most surfaces, with noticeable highway float. the available air suspension’s sport setting induces some body jiggle.”

“under more aggressive maneuvers, the base ls suspension exhibits significant dive during heavy braking, and pronounced body roll while cornering.”

“suspension is on the soft side, but handling is still respectable.”

“…the overall design is a bit staid when compared to more dramatic treatments found in some European luxury sedans.”

vs. MErcEdEs-bEnz And lExusEquus is part of the Large Premium Car segment, where it competes with the Mercedes-Benz S550 and the Lexus LS 460. Here’s how they stack up wheel to wheel.

pErForMAncE5.0-Liter Tau® V8 Engine

Equus is powered by an impressive tau® 5.0-liter V8, which earned a ward’s 10 Best Engines award for 2011 and 2012 (its predecessor—the 4.6-liter V8 featured in the genesis sedan—was named a ward’s 10 Best Engine in 2009 and 2010). Here are the highlights of this engine:

• High-pressure die-cast engine block made entirely aluminum: to reduce overall vehicle weight

• Tuned-Induction System (TIS): to maximize power• Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT): to improve both low-

end torque and high-end horsepower• Additional details like the timing chain drive system, serpentine belt and

iridium double-tipped spark plugs to help make Equus one of the most fuel-efficient luxury cars in its class

8-Speed Automatic Transmission

Hyundai engineers designed this high-performance transmission with precise gear ratios and lightweight components to make it highly responsive and a perfect complement to the 429-horsepower Tau® V8. Whether in automatic or SHIFTRONIC® manual-shift mode, it also has the capability to achieve torque converter lock-up above first gear, which dramatically closes the fuel-efficiency gap between automatic and manual transmissions.

Rear-Wheel Drive

The very nature of rear-wheel drive shifts Equus closer to a more ideal 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution. this means the engine, transmission, driveshaft and rear differential provide better dynamic balance. the larger rear tires and springs offer a smoother, more stable ride, with greater maximum stopping power, and enhanced handling and traction under hard acceleration.

Fun FActsHighways: Did You Know?

While you’re enjoying Equus, think about this:

• The National Highway System (NHS) is composed of approximately 160,000 miles of roadway.• 98% of the NHS has been completed.• About 90% of the U.S. population lives within four miles of an NHS road.• There are national highways in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.• Interstates running east and west have even numbers; running north and south, have odd

numbers.• The last stoplight along an interstate route was removed from I-90 in Wallace, Idaho, in 1991.• In 1956, there were 156 million Americans and 54 million registered vehicles (approximately one

vehicle for every three people); today, there are more than 300 million people and 237 million vehicles.• Americans drive 3 trillion miles a year on the highways—three times the miles of 1956.• Truckers use the interstates to move $300 billion in goods annually, including fresh seafood

and produce.

• 429 horsepower @ 6,400 rpm (premium); 421 horsepower @ 6,400 rpm (regular)

• 376 lb.-ft. of torque @ 5,000 rpm (premium); 365 lb.-ft. of torque @ 5,000 rpm (regular)

• Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI): for superior power and economy• Hydraulic Valve Lash Adjustment (HLA): to reduce maintenance • Steel timing chain: service interval inspection at 105,000 miles • Iridium double-tipped spark plugs: replacement at 105,000 miles • Fuel economy: 15/18/23 mpg city/combined/highway• Fuel capacity: 20.3 gallons• Driving range: 365 miles
