Preface: This bibliography brings together a wide range of material related to the general

area of local computer networking. Many of the individual entries have been supplemented

with brief annotations, to help identify some of the salient characteristics of particular

designs. In addition, the references are preceded with an overall guide or taxonomy that

establishes a structure for considering local networks, and which can serve as a useful

means to locate particular articles.

The taxonomy, references, and annotations in this preliminary edition are in a continual state

of evolution. Suggestions for additions would be very welcome, as would corrections,

comments, or criticisms of the Cllrrent material. Please address any comments to John

Shoch, at the address listed below,

CR Categories: 3.81.

Part 1: A guide to the literature 011 local computer networks

This section of thc bibliography provides a broad taxonomy for classifying work on local computer networks. In general. systems have b<.."Cn categorized according to their hasic physical connectivity: partially connected meSh networks. simple stars. circular structures. bus systems. etc. Each category a\soincorporates sub-headings for specific network designs. with cit'ltiollS referring to particular papers that arc relevant; the complete references may be fbund in Part 2.

2. Fully COllnected nctworks (using point to point lines)

No such systems have ever been seriously proposed for local use.

3. Partiully connected networks (using point to point lines). store & forward via IMPS

Appendix: Radio Commnnicatiolls

Radio-based networks may not -- strictly speaking -- be local networks. but many of the techniques are important in the consideration of such loc'll nclworks. This section includl.'S most ·of the important papers: it docs not altempt to ti.ll1y record all of the work done on multi-access radio and satellite channels. nor docs it include working papers Stich as lhe Packet Radio Temporary Notes. Papers arc gener.llIy of two diflcrent kinds: propmklls or descriptions for working systems. and primarily analytical work.
