    ABSTRACT: Part icle-size distr ibution of hyd raulic cements plays an

    indispensa ble role in control l ing the pro duct quali ty and m aintaining

    rel iable performance in end applicat ions. Select ion of part icle-size

    measurement methods is becoming increasingly complex due to the

    ava i lab il i ty o f a va r ie ty o f ins t ruments based o n d i f fe ren t measure -

    ment principles. This paper discusses the primary cr i ter ia to be met

    by a part icle-size distr ibution analyz er for applicat ions in hydraulic

    cement charac te r iza t ion . Amon g the severa l me thods ava i lab le fo r

    measuring the part icle-size distr ibution, a l ight diffract ion technique

    was ut i l ized to examine the effect of dispersion solvents on the re-

    sul t ing size distr ibution . Dist i l led water , d is t i l led wate r containing a

    polyac rylate surfactant , isopro pyl alcohol , and a comm ercial ly avail-

    able organ ic surfactant were used as dispersion solvents. The result ing

    data are analyzed with respect to variat ions due to the dispersion

    solvents and factors responsible for the observed variat ions.
