Or perhaps your child’s cough has deteriorated overnight into a bad wheezy spell at 3 AM. When an emergency hits, especially at ungodly hours, it is reassuring to know that Farrer Park Hospital’s 24-hour Emergency Clinic is always open.

FARRER PARK - AN ALWAYS OPEN, QUICK EMERGENCY SERVICE

Time E�cient LayoutWhen driving into Farrer Park Hospital, a specially painted Red Lane guides vehicles expeditiously from the ground �oor entrance at Farrer Park Station Road, up the ramp to the emergency facility at Level 2. Patients access the facility via a walk-in entrance or an ambulance entrance, depending on severity of illness. From the ambulance drop o� to the receiving bay and then triage point and then resuscitation area, the route is a straight path of less than 20 meters. This may make the di�erence between life and death in extremely acute cases. From there, the routes to imaging, laboratory, pharmacy, ICU and operating rooms can be covered within 2-3 minutes. This cuts down on transit time between services, and enhances patient comfort and safety.

Multifunctional AreasWalk-in patients have a sitting and waiting area before being seen in one of 4 consultation rooms. In addition there

are special function rooms for eye and ear examinations, minor orthopedic procedures, observation bays, and an isolation room. Outside the emergency rooms, next to the ambulance bays, is a large green zone for segregated holding of persons in case of infectious disease outbreaks. The �oor of this area is painted with antibacterial paint. Experienced Sta� Farrer Park Hospital’s emergency team focuses on o�ering prompt medical attention. The facility is well supported by a large group of physicians, surgeons and anesthesiologists who cover a wide range of medical specialities. Specialist doctors practice within the 189-suite Farrer Park Medical Centre, a lift away.

Better ComfortTo improve patients’ comfort, registration and nurse triage can be conducted at the patient's bedside using enabling mobile technology.

This helps to make patient experience at the emergency service less disconcerting during acute illness.

Hoe Garden

YOKO THE SAKURA

In HealthConnexion, the premium health screening centre in Farrer Park Hospital, �aming red maple leaves in Hoe Garden capture well the spirit of Mr. Teo. At the far corner of the garden, where there is an outdoor platform for Chado (Japanese tea ceremony), meditation and exercise, a cherry blossom tree will soon be planted to feather the garden.

You might ask: How can a cherry blossom tree grow in tropical Singapore? This idea drove Masaaki Takaoka after the second world war, during which many of his students perished overseas despite promising to return and meet under a cherry tree, to develop a species that could grow in countries ravaged by the war. Success after many decades of e�ort resulted in the Yoko species. Takaoka's inspirational journey has been made into a movie - Yoko the Cherry Blossom - released in November 2015.

Many months ago, Professor Maurice Choo learnt about the Yoko and set about to bring the hybrid to Singapore. After much research as well as meetings with our Japanese friends in Singapore and Japan, a team �nally left for Japan in November 2015 to collect 50 precious saplings of the Yoko to plant in Connexion. Before that, the team had prepared the paper work to enable the plants to leave Japan and enter Singapore, and also engaged a Singapore nursery to grow the saplings before transplanting.

Louise Soh, manager in HealthConnexion, traveled to Shikoku to be intensively trained on how to care for the saplings. After she collected the saplings, they were transported to Fukuoka, before being accompanied by the team back to Singapore on 19 November 2015. Upon arrival, the saplings, which had undergone the stress of being dried, desoiled and packed, were immediately rushed to the nursery for hydration and planting.

The Yoko saplings have grown faster than we had hoped, and none has "died back" as we had feared. They are the very �rst cherry blossom trees that we hope will thrive naturally in Singapore's tropical climate. One Yoko will be planted in Hoe Garden, and about 19 will be planted in the Level 2 car park atrium garden next to the entrance of Farrer Park Hospital.

When mature in about three years’ time, the Yoko trees will be 3-5 meters tall and they will greatly add to the beauty and healing gardens of Connexion.

In a private ceremony on 14 December 2015, the Japanese garden in HealthConnexion was named "Hoe Garden" in memory of Mr. Teo Soon Hoe, a founding director of The Farrer Park Company. Mr. Teo was passionate about Farrer Park, and contributed enormously to its development.
