An Air Handling Unit (AHU) is used to re-condition and circulate air as part of a heating, ventilating and air-co nditioning system. An Air Handling Unit (AHU) is used to re-condition and circulate air as part of a heating, ventilating and air-co nditioning system.  The basic function of the AHU is take in outsid e air, re-condition it and su pply it as fresh air to a building. All ehaust air is removed, !hich creates an acceptable indoor air "uality. #epending on the re"uired temperature of the re-conditioned air, the fresh air is either heated by a recovery unit or heating coil, or cooled by a cooling coil. $n buildings, !here the hygienic re"uirements for air "uality are l o!er, some of the air from the rooms can be re-circulated via a miing chamber and this can result in signi%cant energy savings. A miing chamber has dampers f or controlling the ratio bet!ee n the return, outside and ehaust air .  The AHU is a large metal bo containing separate ventilators for supply and ehaust, heating coil, cooling coil, heating&cooling recovery system, air %lter racks or chambers, sound attenuators, miing chamber, and dampers. AHUs connect to duct!ork that distributes the conditioned air through the building, and returns it to the AHU. A heat&cooling recovery echanger is normally %tted to the AHU for energy savings and increasing capacity.
