On the interpretation of density

Throughout the piece, performers will be asked to play freely in order to creategranulated sound masses of different densities. Indications will ask for low, medium orhigh density; arrows are used to indicate a gradual change in density. The resulting soundis left to the interpreters’ own sensibility, nevertheless, a change in density should not be

confused with an accelerando or ritardando: it is not a change of apparent tempo, or theregular increase or decrease in the space between sounds. It is rather an irregular changein the amount of sound that exists in a determined period of time. Indications will specifythe group of instruments with which the performer will create these granulated soundmasses.

place the stick perpendicular to the cymbal, with the tiptouching the surface and apply enough pressure to produce

high pitched, sustained sounds

dampen when playing

let ring when playing

dampen after playing to produce absolute silence

laissez vibrer: let sound die naturally; do not stop or

dampen after playing
