INTRODUCTION

The Second Advent is as ancient and new as the Church herself, for it is quite simply her longing and waiting

for the return or second coming of the Lord Jesus, Christ the King.

Pope John Paul II has spoken continually of a "New Advent" throughout his papacy in both Encyclicals and

Apostolic Letter, beginning in 1979 with "Redemptor Hominis" and culminating in the recent "Tertio Millennio

Adveniente." He designated the years preceding the turn of the century as a time of intense preparation and

prayer for the coming of the Third Millennium of Christianity. This time led up to a "Great Jubilee" celebrated

throughout the world in 2000.

In 1991 Archbishop Francis Stafford of Denver asked a Jesuit artist who specializes in icons to create an

icon (front cover) surrounding this theme of the New Advent, which could be a source of prayer and summation

of this longing for the Archdiocese of Denver. In 1992 the Archbishop petitioned the Vatican for a feast day for

the icon of our Lady of the New Advent, and in answer received the date December 16, which is the day before

the mystical and utterly beautiful "O Antiphons" of Advent begin.

In 1993 the Archbishop commissioned a second icon to present to the Holy Father as a gift during the

extended celebration of World Youth Day in Denver, August 1993.

Both icons are renditions of the highly venerated, healing images of Our Lady of the Sign. In Byzantine

icons Our Lady of the Sign is often seen at the top of Jacob's ladder, and in the midst of the burning bush before

Moses. In these icons, the Mother of God is shown in the orans (prayer) position, with uplifted hands. The Holy

Child, or Christ Emmanuel, shines forth from an almond shaped mandoria or circular mandala of her womb - or

He nestles as the Child King in the arc and fold her garments. The letters near the Virgin Mother Mu Rho Theta

Upsillon are Greek abbreviations for "Mother of God". The letters near the Child, Iota Sigma Chi Sigma,

signify "Jesus Christ." Sometimes there are jewels in the Child's halo or letters Omicron Omega Nu which

signify the Child's divinity... "I am who am."

Following World youth Day there was a great interest in the New Advent, and praying with the icon of the

Mother of God. It seems that a growing number of people are being drawn into this spirit of longing and praying

for the New Advent. And so, one way to answer this longing is to try a prayer, a nine day novena, which begins

on the feast day of Our Lady of the New Advent, and ends on Christmas Eve.

This Novena can be used privately by an individual, by a family, couple or small prayer group, or in the

family and community of the local church. The novena of prayer with Our Lady of the New Advent is simply a

"sketch" with suggested readings, prayers and the hymn of Advent "O Come, O Come Emmanuel." Three

readings are given for each day, though one or two may be sufficient depending upon the inspiration and needs

of the individual or group.

"The Spirit and the Bride say 'come!'

Amen; come, Lord Jesus." Revelation 22

"Each Advent is attended by mystery, what is now know of either event is not all that is to be know, but

what is confessed by Christians as to both Advents is know to them through the conjunction of the two.

That which is known and affirmed now because of the First Advent and in the expectancy of the Second

Advent is, however, enough to be politically decisive, that is to say, enough to edify choice and action in issues

of conscience and obedience with respect to the rulers of the world. In the First Advent, Christ comes as Lord;

in the next Advent, Christ comes as judge of the world and the world's principalities and thrones, in vindication

of his reign and of the sovereignty of the Word of God in history. This is the wisdom, which the world deems

folly, which biblical people bear and by which they live as the church in the world for the time being.

For primitive Christians, so much defamed and so often harassed and sometimes savaged in first-century

Rome, the secret of the First Advent was thought to be in the consolation of the next Advent. The pathos and

profound absurdity of the birth of Jesus Christ was understood to be trans-figured in the Second Coming of

Jesus Christ. The significance of Advent could only be realized in the hope of the return of Jesus Christ."

First Day SUGGESTED READING: Genesis 28:10-17

Now Jacob left Beersheba, and went toward Haran. And he came to a certain place, and stayed there that

night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head, and lay down in

that place to sleep. And he drea med that there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to

heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! And behold, the Lord stood above

it and said, "I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will

give to you and your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and

east and to the north and to the south; and by you and your descendants shall all the families of the earth bless

themselves. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for

I will not leave you until I have done that of which I have spoken to you." Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and

said, "surely the Lord is in this place; and I did not know it." And he was afraid, and said, "How awesome is this

place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of Heaven."

SUGGESTED READING: Revelations 12:1-17

And a great sign appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on

her head a crown of twelve stars. She was with child and she cried out in her pangs of birth, in anguish for

delivery. And another portent appeared in heaven; behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns,

and seven diadems upon his heads. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven, and cast them to the earth.

And dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a child, that he might devour her child when she

brought it forth; she brought forth a male child, one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child

was caught up to God and to his throne. And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared

by God, in which to be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days.

Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon; and the dragon and his angels

fought, but they were defea ted and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And all the great dragon

was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world he

was thrown down to the earth and his angels were thrown down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven,

saying. Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come,

for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And

they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; for they loved not their

lives even unto death. Rejoice then, O heaven and you that dwell therein! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for

the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!"

And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had borne

the male child. But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle th at she might fly from the serpent

into the wilderness to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. The serpent

poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with the flood. But the earth

came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river which the dragon had

poured from his mouth. Then the dragon was angry with the women, and went off to make war on the rest of her

offspring on those who keep the commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus. And he stood on the sand

of the sea.

SUGGESTED READING: Ecclesiasticus 2:1-12

My child, if you aspire to serve the Lord, prepare yourself for an ordeal. Be sincere of heart, be steadfast,

and do not be alarmed when disaster comes. Cling to him and do not leave him, so that you may be honored at

the end of your days. Whatever happens to you, accept it, and in the uncertainties of your humble state, be

patient, since gold is tes ted in the fire, and chosen in the furnace of humiliation. Trust in him and he will uphold

you, follow a straight path and hope in him. You who fear the Lord, wait for his mercy; do not turn aside, for

fear you fall. You who fear the Lord, trust him, and you will not be robbed of your reward. You who fear the

Lord, hope for those good gifts of his, everlasting joy and mercy. Look at the generations of old and see: who

ever trusted in the Lord and was put to shame? Or who ever, steadfastly fearing him , was forsaken? Or who

ever called to him and was ignored? For the Lord is compassionate and merciful, he forgives sins and saves in

the time of distress.

Prayer to Our Lady of the New Advent

O Lady and Mother

of the One who was and is and is to come,

dawn of the New Jerusalem,

we earnestly beseech you,

bring us by your intercession

so to live in love

that the Church, the Body of Christ,

may stand in this world's dark

as fiery icon of the New Jerusalem.

We ask you to obtain for us this mercy

through Jesus Christ, your Son and Lord,

who lives and reigns

with the Father in the Holy Spirit,

one God forever and ever. Amen.

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is

in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass

against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy

womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever

shall be, world without end. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN: O Come, O Come Emmanuel

1. O come, O come, Emmanuel And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son

of God Appear.

Refrain: REJOICE! REJOICE! EMMANUEL SHALL COME TO THEE, O ISRAEL!

2. O come, Thou Wisdom from, on high, Who ord'rest all things mightily; To us the path of knowledge

show, And teach us in her ways to go.

3. O come, O come, Thou Lord of might, Who to Thy tribes on Sinai's height In ancient times didst give the

law, In cloud and majesty and awe.

4. O co me, Thou rod of Jesse's stem, From ev'ry foe deliver them That trust thy mighty pow'r to save, And

give them vict'ry O'er the grave.

5. O come, Thou key of David come, And open wide our heav'nly home; Make safe the way that leads on

high, And close the path of misery.

6. O come, Thou dayspring from on high And cheer us by Thy drawing nigh; Disperse the gloomy clouds of

night, And death's dark shadow put to flight.

7. O come, Desire of nations, bind In one the hearts of all human kind; Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,

And be Thyself our Prince of Peace.

If the Novena is held in a church or group setting, each day's readings may be followed by a homily, group

reflection on the particular "theme" of the day. This is followed by the prayer to Our Lady of the New Advent

written by the Sisters of St. Walburga's Abbey in Boulder Colorado. After this, a recitation of the Our Father,

Hail Mary, and Glory Be.

The closing hymn could be the full set of verses of "O come, O Come Emmanuel" or hymns to the Mother

of God might be used.

"O Wisdom!"

Second Day SUGGESTED READING: Psalm 131

O Lord, my heart is not proud,

I do not set my sights too high.

I have taken no part in great affairs,

in wonders beyond me.

No, I hold myself in quiet and silence.

Like a little child in its mother's arms,

like a litt le child, so I keep myself.

Let Israel hope in the Lord now and forever.

SUGGESTED READING: Ecclesiasticus 51:13-27

When I was still a youth, before I went travelling, in my prayers I asked outright for wisdom. Outside the

sanctuary I would pray for her, and to the last I shall continue to seek her. From her blossoming to the ripening

of her grape my heart has taken delight in her. My foot has pursued a straight path, I have sought her ever since

my youth. By bowing my ear a little, I have received her, and have found much instruction. Thanks to her I have

advanced; glory be to him who has given me wisdom! For I was determined to put her into practice, have

earnestly pursued the good, and shall not be put to shame. My soul has fought to possess her, I have been

scrupulous in keeping the Law; I have stretched out my hands to heaven and bewailed how little I knew of her;

having my heart fixed on her from the outset, I shall never be deserted; my very core having yearned to discover

her, I have now acquired a good possession. In reward the Lord has given me a tongue with which I shall sing

his praises. Come close to me, take your place in my school. Why complain about lacking these things when

your souls are so thirsty for them? I have opened my mouth and said: "Buy her without money, put your necks

under her yoke, let your souls receiver instruction, she is near, within your reach." See for yourselves: how slight

my efforts have been to win so much peace.

SUGGESTED READING: Kings 3:5-15

At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, "Ask what I shall give you."

And Solomon said, "You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David, my father, because he

walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you; and you have kept

for him this great and steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. And now, O Lord

my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child; I do not

know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great

people, that cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your

people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to govern this your great people"

It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. And God said to him , "Because you have asked this, and

have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself

understanding to discern what is right, behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and

discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall rise after you. I give you also

what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall compare with you, all your days.

And if you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked,

then I will lengthen your days."

And Solomon awoke, and behold, it was a dream. Then he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of

the covenant of the Lord, and offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings, and made a feast for all his

servants.

Third Day SUGGESTED READING: Isaiah 6:1-8

In the year King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up ; and his train filled the

temple. Above him stood the seraphim; each had six wings; with two he covered his face, and with two covered

his feet and with two he flew. And one called to another and said: "Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts; the

whole earth is full of his glory." And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called and

the house was filled with smoke. And said "Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I

dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of host!"

Then flew one of the seraphim to me, having in his hand a burning coal which he had taken with tongs from

the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: "Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and

your sin forgiven." And I heard a voice of the Lord saying, "whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Then I

said, "Here I am! Send me!"

Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat

down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into

the deep and let down your nets for a catch." And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took

nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets." And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of

fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the boat to come and help the. And they

came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw t, he fell down at Jesus' knees,

saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord." For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at

the catch of fish which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners of

Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people!" And when they

had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

SUGGESTED READING: Revelation 1:1-8

Then, in my vision, I saw a door open in heaven and heard the same voice speaking to me, the voice like a

trumpet, saying 'come up here: I will show you what is to take place in the future.' With that, I fell into ecstasy

and I saw a throne standing in heaven, and the One who was sitting on the throne, and the One sitting there

looked like a diamond and a ruby. There was a rainbow encircling the throne, and this looked like an emerald.

Round the throne in a circle were twenty-four thrones, and on them twenty-four elders sitting, dressed in white

robes with golden crowns on their heads. Flashes of lightning were coming from the throne, and the sound of

peals of thunder, and in front of the throne there were seven flaming lamps burning, the seven Spirits of God. In

front of the throne and around it, were four living creatures all studded with eyes, in front and behind. The first

living creature was like a lion, the second like a bull, the third living creature had a human face, and the fourth

living creature was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was studded with eyes

all the way round as well as inside; and day and night they never stopped singing: Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord

God, the Almighty; who was, and is and is to come.

Fourth Day SUGGESTED R EADING: 1 Samuel 16:4-13

Samuel did what the Lord commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to him

trembling, and said, "Do you come peaceably?" And he said, "Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord;

consecrated Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice.

When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed is before him." But the Lord

said to Samuel, "Do not look on his appearance or height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the

Lord sees not as people see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart." Then Jesse

called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, "Neither has the Lord chosen this one." Then

Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, "Neither has the Lord chosen this one. And Jesse made seven of his

sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all your sons here? And he said, "There remains yet

the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse, "send and fetch him; for we will

not sit down until he comes here." And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes,

and he was handsome. And the Lord said, "Arise, anoint him; for this is he." Then Samuel took the horn of oil,

and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day

forward."

SUGGESTED READING: Psalm 89:19,20,3,4,15,17,18

Once you spoke in a vision,

to your faithful prophet you said,

'I have given strength to a warrior,

I have raised up a man chosen from my people.

I have found David my servant

and anointed him with my holy oil.

I have made a covenant with my Chosen One,

sworn an oath to my servant David:

I have made your dynasty firm forever,

built your throne stable age after age.

My constancy and faithful love will be with him,

in my name his strength will be triumphant.

How blessed the nation that learns to acclaim you!

They will live, O Lord, in the light of your presence.

You are the flower of their strength,

for to the Lord belongs our shield,

to the Holy One of Israel our king.

SUGGESTED READING: Revelation 22:1-5,16,17,20

Then the angel showed me the river of life, rising from the throne of God and of the Lamb, and flowing

crystal clear. Down the middle of the city street, on either bank of the river were the trees of life, bearing twelve

kinds of fruit, one for each month, and the leaves of the trees were for the healing of the nations.

The curse of destruction will be abolished. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city; his

servants will worship him, they will see him face to face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. And

night will be abolished; they will not need lamplight or sunlight, because the Lord God will be shining on them.

They will reign for ever and ever...

I Jesus, have sent my angel to attest these things to you for the sake of the churches. I am the spring from the

root of David and the bright morning star...

The one who attests these things says: I am indeed coming soon. Amen; come, Lord Jesus.

Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David, 'Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the

pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people of Israel; and I have been with you

wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name,

like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them,

that they may dwell in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and violent men shall afflict them no more, as

formerly, from the time that I appointed jud ges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your

enemies. Moreover the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled

and you will lie down with fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your

body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his

kingdom forever. I will be his father and he shall be my son. When he commits iniquity, I will chasten him w ith

the rod of men, with the stripes of sons of men; but I will not take my steadfast love from him... and your house

and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me; your throne shall be made sure forever.'

SUGGESTED READING: Judith 16:1-7,11,13,14

Then Judith began this thanksgiving before all Israel, and all the people loudly sang this song of praise. And

Judith said, Begin a song to my God with tambourines, sing to my Lord with cymbals. Raise to him a new

psalm; exalt him and call upon his name. For God is the god who crushes wars; for he has delivered me out of

the hands of my pursuers, and brought me into his camp, in the midst of the people. The Assyrian came down

from the mountains of the north; he came with myriads of his warriors; their multitude blocked up the valleys,

their cavalry covered the hills. He boasted that he would burn up my territory, and kill my young men with the

sword, and dash my infants to the ground and seize my children as prey, and take my young girls as booty. But

the Lord has foiled them by the hand of a women. For their mighty one did not fall by the hands of the young

men, nor did the sons of the Titans smite him, nor did the tall giants set upon him; but Judith the daughter of

Merari disarmed him with the beauty of her face. Then my oppressed people shouted for joy; for the weak

people shouted and the enemy trembled; they lifted up their voices, and the enemy were turned back. I will sing

to my God a new song: O Lord, you are glorious and great, wonderful in strength, invincible. Let all your

creatures serve you, for you spoke and they were made. You sent forth your Spirit and it formed them; there is

none that can resist your voice.

SUGGESTED READING: Mark 10:46-52

They reached Jericho; and as he left Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus that is, the son

of Timaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting at the side of the road. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he

began to shout a nd cry out, "Son of David, Jesus, have pity on me!' And many of them scolded him and told

him to be quiet, but he only shouted all the louder, 'Son of David', have pity on me!" Jesus stopped and said,

'Call him here.' So they called the blind man over. 'Courage,' they said, 'get up; he is calling you.' So throwing

off his cloak, he jumped up and went to Jesus. Then Jesus spoke, 'what do you want me to do for you?' The

blind man said to him, 'My Master, let me see again.' Jesus said to him, 'Go; your faith has saved you.' And at

once his sight returned and he followed him along the road.

Arise, shine for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness shall

cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon

you. And all nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Lift your eyes round

about, and see; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far, and your daughters

shall be carried in the arms. Then you shall see and be radiant, your heart shall thrill and rejoice; because the

abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you, they shall bring gold

and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord. The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for

brightness shall the moon give light to you by night; but the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God

will be your glory. And your days of mourning shall be ended. Your people shall be righteous; they shall possess

the land forever, the shoot of my planting the work of my hands, that I might be glorified. The least one shall

become a clan, and the smallest one a mighty nation; I am the Lord; in its time I will hasten it.

SUGGESTED READING: John 1:1-14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word w as with God, and the Word was with God, and the Word

was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not

anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of all. The light shines in the darkness,

and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light,

that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness t o the light.

The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was

made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home and his own people received him not.

But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were

born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as

of the only Son of the Father.

SUGGESTED READING: Luke 9:27-36

'I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.'

Now about eight days after this had been said, he took with him Peter, John and James, and went up the

mountain to pray. And it happened that, as he was praying, the aspect of his face was changed and his clothing

became sparkling white. And suddenly there were two men talking to him; they were Mosses and Elijah

appearing in glory, and they were speaking of his passing which he was to accomplish in Jerusalem. Peter and

his companions were heavy with sleep, but they woke up and saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

As these were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, 'Master, it is wonderful for us to be here; so let us make three

shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.' He did not know what he was saying. As he was saying

this, a cloud came and covered them with shadow; and when they went into the cloud the disciples were afraid.

And a voice came from the cloud saying, 'This is my Son, the Chosen one. Listen to him. And after the voice

had spoken, Jesus was found alone. The disciples kept silence and, at that time, told no one what they had seen.

Seventh Day SUGGESTED READING: Psalm 93

The Lord is king, robed in majesty, robed is the Lord and girded with power. The world is indeed set firm, it

can never be shaken; your throne is set firm from of old, from all eternity you exist. The rivers lift up, O Lord,

the rivers lift up their voices, the rivers lift up their thunder. Greater than the voice of many waters, more

majestic than the breakers of the sea, the Lord is majestic in the heights. Your decrees stand firm, unshakable,

holiness is the beauty of your house, O Lord, for all time to come.

SUGGESTED READING: Matthew 2:1-12

Now when Jesus was born in Be thlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold wise men from the

East came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in

the East, and have come to worship him." When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem

with him, and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people. He inquired of them where the Christ

was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet; 'And you, O

Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a

ruler who will govern my people Israel."

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; and

he sent them to Bethlehem saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring

me word, that I too may come and worship him." When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the

star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going into the house they saw the child

with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts,

gold and frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their

own country by another way.

SUGGESTED READING: John 18: 33-38

Pilate entered the praetorium again and Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus

answered, "Do you say this of your accord, or did others say it to you about me?" Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew?

Your own nation and chief priests have handed you over to me; what have you done?" Jesus answered, "My

kingship is not of this world; if my kingship were of this world, my servants would fight, that I might not be

handed over to the Jews; but my kingship is not from this world." Pilate said to him, so you are a king?" Jesus

answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born; and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness

to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice."

Eighth Day SUGGESTED READING: Isaiah 7:10-14

Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, "Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven."

But Ahaz said, " ;I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test." And he said, "Hear then, O house of

David! Is it too little for you to weary people, that you weary may God also? Therefore the Lord himself will

give you a sign. Behold a young woman shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel."

SUGGESTED READING: Daniel 7:1,9,10,13,14

In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in his

bed. Then he wrote down the dream, and told the sum of the matter.

As I looked, thrones were placed and one that was Ancient of Days took his seat; his raiment was white as

snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, its wheels were burning fire. A

stream of fire issued and came forth from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times

ten thousand stood before him; the court stood in judgment, and the books were opened.

I saw in the night visions, and behold with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he

came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and

kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion,

which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.

SUGGESTED READING: Matthew 5:1-12

Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain. And when he was seated his disciples came to him. Then he

began to speak. This is what he taught them:

"How blessed are the poor in spirit: the kingdom of God is theirs. "Blessed are the gentle: they shall inherit

the earth. Blessed are they who mourn: they shall be comforted. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for

holiness: they shall have their fill. Blessed are the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them. Blessed are the

pure in heart: they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: they shall be recognized as children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted in the cause of justice: the kingdom of God is theirs. Blessed are you when

people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of calumny against you falsely on my account. Rejoice

and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven; this is how they persecuted the prophets before you."

"Our Lady of the New Advent: The Burning Bush"

Ninth Day SUGGESTED READING: Exodus 3:1-8

Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to

the west side of the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the Lord appeared to

him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush; and he looked and lo, the bush was burning, yet it was not

consumed. And Moses said, "I will turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt." When the

Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out o f the bush, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I

am." Then he said, "Do not come near; put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you are

standing is holy ground." And he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and

the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

Then the Lord said, "I have seen the affliction of my people who are Egypt, and have heard their cry because

o f their cry because of their oppressor; I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them out of the

hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk

and honey.

SUGGESTED READING: Ecclesiasticus 24:1-4,6,8,9,13,14,18-20,32-34

Wisdom will praise herself, and will glory in the midst of her people. In the assembly of the Most High she

will open her mouth, and in the presence of his host she will glory: I came forth from the mouth of the Most

High, and covered the earth like a mist. I dwelt in high places, and my throne was in a pillar of cloud...in the

waves of the sea, in the whole earth, and in every people and nation I have gotten a possession.

Then the Creator of all things gave me a commandment, and the one who created me assigned a place for

my tent. And he said, 'Make your dwelling in Jacob, and in Israel receive your inheritance,' From eternity, in the

beginning, he created me, and for eternity I shall not cease to exist.

I grew tall like a cedar in Lebanon, and like a cypress on the heights of Hermon. I grew like a palm tree in

Engedi, and like rose plants in Jericho; like a beautiful olive tree in the field, and like a plane tree I grew tall.

Come to me, all you who desire me, and eat your fill of my produce. For the remembrance of me is sweeter than

honey, and my inheritance sweeter than the honeycomb.

I am the mother of fairest love, of fear, of knowledge , and of holy; being eternal, I am therefore given to all

my children, to those who are named by him. I will again make instruction shine forth like the dawn, and I will

make instruction shine forth like the prophecy, and leave it all to future generations. Observe that I have not

labored for myself alone, but for all who seek instruction.

SUGGESTED READING: Revelation 21:1-59-11,22,23

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the

sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a

bride adorned for her husband; and I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold the dwelling of God is

with people! He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them; and God

himself will be with them; he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither

shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away. And he who sat

on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new."

Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues, and spoke to me,

saying, "Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb." And the Spirit he carried me away to a great,

high mountain, and showed me the holy city of Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the

glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.

And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or

moon to shine upon it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb.
