THE TWO NATIONAL SYMBOL OF THE
PHILIPPINES
The National AnthemThe National Flag
The National Anthem
The Philippine National Anthem was composed by Julian Felipe as instructed by General Emilio Aguinaldo.
It was first played publicly on June 12, 1898 by the town band of San Francisco de Malabon on the occasion of the proclamation of Philippine Independence and the unfurling of the Philippine Flag in Kawit, Cavite.
For more than a year the Philippine National Anthem remained without any lyrics, until Jose Palma wrote the poem Filipinas in Spanish, which became the original words of the anthem.
During the American colonial rule of the Philippines, the Spanish lyrics of the anthem was translated into English titled The Philippine Hymn by a Filipino writer, Camilo Osias, and an American, A.L. Lane.
Finally, during the term of President Ramon Magsaysay, two Filipinos by the name of Julian Cruz Balmaceda and Ildefonso Santos translated the lyrics into Filipino with the title "Lupang Hinirang", which became the official version of the Philippine National Anthem in 1956.
The National Flag
The symbols of the flag
an eight rayed sun
three golden stars
a red stripe
a blue stripe
a white triangle
The sun represents the beginning of a new era of self
determination. The 8 rays on the sun stand for the 8 provinces (Tarlac, Cavite,
Manila, Batangas, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Laguna), that rose in revolt against Spanish rule in the late 19th century.
The 3 stars stands for the 3 principal geographic areas of the country; Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
The colors in the flag
The white color represents peace and purity
The red stripe represents courage and bravery
The blue stripe is for noble ideals
One country, two flags!
Probably unique in the world is that a country has a flag for peacetime and a flag for wartime. The flag showed above is, let us hope, the one we'll see always. Blue on the top stands for peacetime. In wartime the flag will have the red stripe on the top.
