President’s MessageThe year 2015 has come and gone, and we are now at the beginning of a new year. The year past saw the election of a new Management Committee (MC) in May, and it very quickly got down to assess the challenges facing the Club, and draft plans to meet those challenges. It confirmed the previous MC’s view that after 15 years on the Choa Chu Kang site, the course is due for a major renovation and repair. Other challenges included the need to address the Club’s long term financial viability, and the inter-related issues of making the Club more vibrant and its facilities more attractive to its members.
An Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) was convened at the end of the year to seek members’ approval to implement some of these plans, and I am pleased that at the 6th November 2015 meeting, members approved the proposals put forward by the MC. These were for the expenditure of up to $2 million for the renovation of the golf course, the conversion of one hundred Social Transferable Memberships to Golfing Transferable Memberships, and amendments to the Constitution, most of which were pertaining to the streamlining of the Club’s disciplinary process.
With the EGM out of the way, the MC can now concentrate its efforts on implementing the said proposals. A Golf Course Renovation Team, led by the Green Convenor Bryan Ong, has been set up. Its immediate task is to draw up the tender specifications for the course renovation. This should be completed by the end of January, following which we will be inviting tenders for the job. The work is expected to take about 12 months, from mid 2016 to mid 2017. During this period, nine holes will be closed for the first six months, followed by the other nine for the second period. Plans will be drawn up to allow play on a nine-hole course during the renovation period, and details will be announced in due course. We expect this will cause some inconvenience to members, and urge your understanding and patience.
Captain’sMessageHappy New Year to everyone! I wish all our members & their families great health, happiness and good golf in 2016.
The Club’s golfing scene was active and exciting during the last few months of 2015. Aside from Club-organised events such as the Captain’s Day in October, Senior & Evergreen Golf Tournament in November and Christmas Mixed Game in December, golfers were also brought on a trip to our neighbouring country, Malaysia, where everyone had a jolly fun time catching up with our mates from Segamat Country Club & Kluang Country Club. Our juniors and their parents got on a ferry to Batam in November for their annual offsite golf camp where they spent 3 days golfing at Tering Bay and Palm Springs. During this period, we were also proud to play host to the SPGA President’s Cup 2015 (for the 8th consecutive year) and the SGA vs MGA Annual Match. Recounts and pictures of these events are all in this magazine.
With another great year behind us, I am sure we have even more momentum to continue to drive forward to an amazing year.
Year 2016 is going to be a particularly exciting year for the Club. With the proposal on golf course renovation approved in the Extraordinary General Meeting that was held on 6 November 2015, we are expecting to commence renovation works in the second half of the year. I hope members will be just as excited as I am as we look forward to an even better golfing experience once renovation concludes.
The upgrading works is expected to take around a year to complete. Once renovation begins, it is inevitable that golfing operations will be affected. In order to minimise inconvenience to golfers and to allow them continued usage of the golfing facilities, the renovation will be carried out over two phases - first nine and back nine. To cater additional golfing facilities and activities, we will also explore possible collaborations with other golf clubs.
Plans and details of the golf course renovation and golfing operations are still being developed at this point in time. Please be assured that we will keep members informed well in advance, and will continue to engage and update members on the progress of the renovation through all our available communication channels.
Let’s continue to enjoy our golf all we can. Events and activities for the first few months of 2016 have been arranged. Our Annual Fa Cai Cup game will be taking place on 20 February; join us in the game and Lo Hei, and together, let us usher in the year of the Monkey! If you love to travel for golf, then our 5D4N Haikou Golf Trip scheduled from 25 to 29 March is something you should not miss.
The Lunar New Year festive mood is quickly filling up at the Club. To all my Chinese friends, may the Year of the Monkey bring about great health, wealth and prosperity! Gong Xi Fa Cai!
Oh Kian Beng
Although members have approved the conversion of 100 Social to Golfing Memberships, the MC have decided that it would be prudent to implement this progressively, bearing in mind the partial closure of the golf course during the renovation period. The first tranche of 30 conversions were taken up very quickly, signalling a very strong demand for golf memberships of our Club. We do not plan to release the balance until the course renovation is underway when we can assess the management of course utilisation during the period.
We are awaiting the Registrar of Societies’ approval of those amendments we have made to the Constitution. We will implement the changes when the green light is given.
Demographic and societal changes in recent years have contributed to a decline of our total Social Memberships. At the end of November 2015, we have a total of 377 vacancies in the Social category. This was despite a very successful publicity and promotion campaign in August when 90 Social Memberships were sold. Warren offers a full range of country club facilities, and a wide range of food and beverage outlets. Besides, Social Members get to golf at a discount during non-peak periods. We hope you can do your part to help publicise the Club, and benefit from helping bring in new members.
May I wish all our Chinese members Gong Xi Fa Cai, as we welcome the Year of the Monkey on 8th February.
Kwek Chiow Yiap Patrick

Warren Golf & Country Club Conferred BizSAFE 4 Status by the Workplace Safety & Health CouncilSince having attained BizSAFE 3 status some three years ago, the Club has relentlessly been cultivating a safe work culture across all workplaces in the various departments and amongst all staff.
BizSAFE is a five-step programme of the Workplace Safety & Health Council that assists organisations to build up their Workplace Safety & Health (WSH) capabilities so that they can achieve quantum improvements in safety and health standards at their workplaces.
The Club was conferred the coveted BizSAFE 4 in December 2015, a progression from the previous status in the BizSAFE journey. This is a testimony to the fact that we had acquired the necessary capability in managing WSH systematically by implementing a WSH Management System.
The award of BizSAFE 4 is yet another recognition of the Club’s Management commitment to WSH and the welfare of its employees.

Know Your Rules
1. A player, intending to play in a certain direction, took a practice backswing for a stroke in that direction and broke a branch impeding his backswing. The player then decided to play in a different direction. The area of his intended swing for a stroke in this new direction was not improved by the breaking of the branch. The player is penalised as he improved the area of the originally intended swing.
2. In a match between A and B, A voluntarily told B during play of a hole that he had played three strokes, whereas in fact he had played four strokes. A did not correct the error before B played his next stroke. A is penalised for giving wrong information.
3. A player takes his stance in a bunker and firmly places his feet in the sand. He then leaves his position to change clubs and thereafter takes his stance a second time. He is penalised for testing the condition of the hazard.
4. A player’s ball lies on a steep slope through the green. The player takes his stance but, fearing the ball might move, does not ground his club and does nothing to cause the ball to move. The ball rolls backwards and is stopped accidentally by the player’s club. The player then removes his club and the ball rolls farther down the slope. The player is not penalised as he has done nothing to make the ball move.
5. Through the green it is not permissible for a player to remove loose impediments from the area in which he is preparing to drop his ball.

“Henry (Golf Executive) has been very helpful and instrumental since the beginning of our enquiries until the day of our event itself. He helped us with a lot of last-minute work and made extra efforts to ensure everything runs well. Henry stayed back to help out with our prize presentation and I was actually very surprised to see that. We will definitely come back again to hold our golf event for the next 3 years.
Desmond (Senior Ops & F&B Manager) and Charles (Yan Palace’s Restaurant Manager) have done an equally good job as well. They prepared the VIP Lounge for us for both our pre-golf reception and dinner. 3 - 4 staff were assigned to us and we were well taken care of. All our guests were extremely happy with the overall event i.e. golf, reception lunch, dinner and prize presentation. Kudos again to all staff of the Golf Department, Golfers’ Terrace and Yan Palace. We could not have enjoyed the event any better without you guys.”

“Being a regular diner here, Tiffany and Linda (F&B Service Staff) recognise me and my family, and always greet and serve us. They feel like friends and are warm. They also suggest food choices and ask us for the type of chilli that we want. The younger staff are also polite.
There was a time when we didn’t see them and it felt like something was missing.
The bad experience we had previously was gone. When we asked for more bean sprouts the last time, we were told by the waiter that there would be an additional $1.00. It was ridiculous but not anymore.

Your Kind Words...Compliments from Members
News Bulletin
Feedback is an important tool for improvement. On top of complaints, it is gratifying to also receive compliments about the Club’s staff, activities and facilities.
This section feature some compliments that we have received from members, guests and event/function organisers.
THANK YOU for the compliments, which will no doubt spur us on to further improve our services!
Satia hether you are visiting Golfers’ Terrace for a quick takeaway, chat with buddies over coffee or just to enjoy a good meal, it’s hard to miss that ever-ready smile beaming across her face.
“I love meeting people and enjoy the work here, but I know there is so much more than just ‘taking orders’”- says Satia with glee.
The Club-wide customer service excellence training programme has most certainly also provided her a good insight and a thorough understanding of service quality.
We caught up with Satia and hear her thoughts on receiving the Club’s Service Star Award, the importance of good customer service and the necessary skills one must possess in order to be effective.
How has working with Warren changed you?Our Senior Ops & F&B Manager works hard with the team in creating an environment where teamwork is one of the top priorities. I have learnt a lot as a team player. I am proud to be a part of this great team. I really feel I have developed a great deal in developing good relationships with colleagues, Club members and guests. I would also like to extend that hospitality to our customers who walk into Golfers’ Terrace for the first time.
Satia accepting the Service Star Award 2015 from Club General
Manager Mr Jinder Aujla.
Congratulations on receiving the Service Star Award! What went through your mind when your name was being announced as the the recipient?Thank you! It was really unexpected. I must say it wouldn’t have been possible without the support from my colleagues. I want to accept the award on their behalf, because I know that everyone in the team continuously strives to perform well in their roles. This award also serves to motivate me to do better in providing quality customer experience for our members & guests!
What do you think good customer service should encompass? To me, it helps to have good work attitude, a friendly disposition & good people-to-people communication skills. It’s not just how we serve the customer, but also how we serve each other in the team. And the drive from within to perform his/her role well in order to meet & exceed customers’ expectations. Our customers are our friends too, so it’s important to establish good rapport. It’s also very important to have good product knowledge.
How do you think you fare in customer service? On a scale of 1 to 10, maybe I rate myself at six, or maybe seven (chuckles). But I know there is a lot more to do and to learn.
Any areas you think you can do even better?I hope to improve on managing customers’ needs better, especially during periods when the restaurant gets busy. I wish to be able to provide them with their requests and at the same time give them personalised attention. To enlighten them with our monthly F&B promotions and be able to provide them with answers to everything they need to know about the items on our menu. And yes, less waiting time for their orders to be served. After all, our customers deserve not just good food, but the overall service experience. With the help of my colleagues, I know this is achievable.
What do you find the most challenging at Warren? It was my first week working at Warren. It was like ‘a race against time’ when the crowd started streaming in for lunch. Coming from a work background that was not related to F&B, managing customers’ orders in the shortest time was really challenging. From the second the customer sat down, the clock started ticking.
But I have learnt to manage all that well now. Thanks to the experienced senior staff who guided me a lot and taught me how to maximise efficiency. I guess understanding how the chefs work back in the kitchen and to know the ‘cook time’ needed for every order placed helps me a lot too!
What is your favorite part about working at Warren?Meeting people. I enjoy having small talks and make them feel welcomed whenever they step into Golfers’ Terrace.
‘Take Five’ with our Service Star

This is definitely the best Taiwan trip we’ve ever been on! The cool weather, scrumptious food, and laughter shared with our friendly companions made this a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable trip! The itinerary for this trip had a pleasantly wide coverage from trademark food tastings to historical and cultural immersions. On top of the well-thought out itinerary, it also proceeded at a comfortable pace that proved convenient for my mother. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to both Joe (Assistant Sports & Events Manager) and the Taiwanese tour guide for making this trip possible and enjoyable for us all.
The wide array of delicious food such as papaya milk shake, oyster meesua, muah chee etc. that tempted us at the night markets were irresistible and certainly made us wish we had additional stomach space to enjoy more! Not to mention the seafood, fruits and pork knuckles from the famous “Niang Jia” show that oozed every bit of the word “fresh”!
allowed to take home as souvenirs. We ended the visit with a traditional and authentic Hakka meal that rounded up this experience tastefully!
In Kaohsiung, we ended off the day by catching glimpses of the beautiful sunset by Xi Zi Wan, cruised along “Love River” and had hearty drinks by the river thereafter. The Pier-2 Art Centre was an interesting and bustling hub with many indoor and outdoor modern art sculptures, statues and decorated building. My children also enjoyed the miniature train ride which took them around the Art Centre!
Kenting is a vibrant place which captivated us with its beautiful coastal landscape and fun-filled activities. We had a go at Go-Karting and it sure was fun being pseudo-F1 drivers for a try! My children also tried Zorbing - they rolled down a hill inside a huge rubber ball while being strapped inside. While it proved rather thrilling, they had loads of fun! It was also there where we chanced upon a uniquely “urn-roasted chicken” that was both a feast to our taste buds and eyes!
Have you also just been on aholiday to somewhere exotic orout of the ordinary? Or have youembarked on a exhilarating trip to agolfing destination? Send us yourstories and photos (email to [email protected]), and share your traveller’s tales with your fellow members!
Jia Le Shui was where we witnessed many rock formations along the eastern coastal of Kenting. Many of these nature rock formations bore an uncanny resemblance to animals such as the rhinoceros, snail, frog, etc. Apart from resemblances to animals, there were rocks that took the shape of the Goddess of Mercy and even the map of Taiwan! The Southern-most point of Taiwan, where the Bashi Channel meets the Pacific Ocean, proved a grand sight that left us awe-struck!
A group of members were brought on an

Delicious food everywhere!
At the night market.
Everyone’s full of love at the Love River.
We also visited the Meinong Hakka Culture Museum which revealed a vast historical background on Hakka life, culture and architecture, providing in-depth understanding of the intractably intertwined relationship between man and nature. The highlight of this visit was definitely the DIY painting of miniature brollies, which we were

Tainan, is well known for its historical and traditional lifestyle & food. There were many historic buildings and temples in Tainan and we visited Chihkan Tower (Fort Provintia), built in 1653 - a Dutch outpost on Formosa during the Dutch colonisation of Taiwan. We learnt about the early beginnings of Taiwan and chanced upon the nine turtles which carried the stone tablets that bear historical records in different languages.
Anping Tree House was an interesting place to witness the magnificence of nature, where the roots actually grew right through the houses! Additionally, stairways and platforms have been installed to provide elevated viewing angles for visitors. It was quite the experience for us city-dwellers as we have never seen such a natural phenomenon.
Ci Gu Salt Mountain, standing at 338 years, was once the largest solar salt field in Taiwan. The salt mountain looks like a snow mountain and we learnt about the processes of the solar salt field. We tasted the unique salted coffee and salted popsicle that boasted a subtle yet refreshing flavour.
The salt mountain (at the background) looking like a snow mountain.
Rolling tea leaves with my mum.
A group picture at Jia Le Shui.Paper umbrella painting at the Hakka Village.
We also had a hands on experience on tea-making where we dressed up as tea leaf-picking “girls”! The process of picking tea leaves to rolling them on a rattan tray was not half as easy as we thought it would be. However, the experience, coupled with the delicious organic farm lunch proved thoroughly rewarding for us all!
The National Museum of Marine Biology & Aquarium showcased a vast variety of marine animals and coral life, of which our favourite was the adorable beluga! The outdoor sculptures of various types of whales were extremely life-like and impressive.
We would once again like to thank Warren, and Joe for planning this trip and creating such wonderful memories for all of us. We are definitely looking forward to future trips organised by the Club!

Profile Feature
“My 15 Seconds of Fame”Tell us about The Little Flying Fish.
The Little Flying Fish is an 8-part local Chinese television drama series produced by Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (now MediaCorp) in 1983. It revolves around the travails of an aspiring teenage swimmer who sets his sight on swimming glory. Wang Shuqi’s (portrayed by Wang Yuqing) interest lies not in studying & preparing for university, but in swimming. This passion comes much to the chagrin of his father, who strongly believes that if Shuqi does not enter university, it would bring immense shame to the entire family.
And your role?I was roped in as one of the stunt performers. And my job was to stand in or ‘body double’ for actors when the script calls for a specialised and skillfully choreographed swimming sequence. The director employed stunt doubles in scenes where only trained swimmers could expertly pull them off, and in cases when an actor was contractually prohibited from performing stunts.
I had to be physically fit to perform those stunts. It helped that I developed good communication skills to understand the instructions clearly. I got along well with the rest of the production team. I also had a few scenes playing a spectator in the stands. It was quite funny to think that I also played a swimmer who was competing against lead character played by Yuqing, whose scenes in the pool were also played by me!
How did you land yourself the part? Did you audition for it? Have you acted in any dramas before?I had never done acting before. But just like the character in the drama, I was also a competitive swimmer at that time. I was with a group of swimmers and we knew this lifeguard who worked at the pool. He had good connections with some people who worked for television. And one day, word went out that they were looking for extras who could swim to act in a drama series. The lifeguard took us for the audition. I was one of the lucky few who got a part.
It was back in the days when cable television was unheard of. Singapore’s first Chinese ‘idol drama’ The Flying Fish came on into our TV screens. All of eight episodes.
For Warren member Howie Soh, his were just fleeting scenes. You’d easily miss his parts if you paid too much attention to local poster boy of the 80s Wang Yuqing. But for a regular kid at age 16, with no acting experience to his resume, it was by no means a small feat to stand in for the leading actor’s toughest and most challenging swim race scenes.
What was the hardest part about being a swim stunt double? To act and perform the stunts well with elements of realism in them, without overacting. We had to make the shots believable as part of the action. And also to make Yuqing look good on television! (remarks with a laugh).
Despite our role as stunt performers, safety had always been the top priority in every aspect of the production. My job was to execute the stunts well and safely, usually under the supervision of a stunt coordinator. Every detail in each sequence needed to be planned in advance with the production staff. This was to ensure that each stunt could be performed safely with minimal disruption to the film production timeline.
And it was also very challenging not todeliberately show my face, or it wouldbe a dead giveaway!
How did you prepare yourself foreach scene?I did not prepare much physically as I was swimming competitively at the time. The only concern was to be able to mimic Yuqing’s freestyle technique very closely. Initially, as part of my own research & preparation for the role, I would watch how Yuqing swims. I observed all his strokes, flutter kicks, glides, down to the flip turns that he usually did. These gave me a very good idea about his techniques and helped me a lot in playing his scenes in the pool.
How is Wang Yuqing like off screen? He is a very sociable person, always wanting to learn, a very responsible and versatile actor. I think he can be very successful in the entertainment industry.
Gold medallist Ang Peng Siong was involved in choreographing the swim scenes. Did you get to work with him?The production invited Singapore swimmer & SEA Games gold medalist Ang Peng Siong to guide the actors in their swimming styles. But unfortunately we did not get a chance to meet him as his set was done at a different venue. But we did get a chance to work with his brother Peng Wee. He was one of the extras. He’s a nice guy!
What was your source of inspiration to do your best when the camera starts rolling?I was able to find inspiration to improve my acting skills when I discovered that many people who were involved in the drama production were really very friendly. The actors, actresses and the crew were always willing to help and guide me. That made me want to work hard.
But overall, I drew inspiration basically from the desire inside me to perform to my very best, not from the desire to emulate someone else.
Who is your favourite actor? Movies you enjoy? My favourite actor is non other than Hollywood veteran Tommy Lee Jones. I like most of his movies and just to name a few - Under Siege (1992), U.S. Marshals (1998), Special Forces (2012).
Any chances of you being an actor if opportunity comes knocking?Yes! I would love to do it if ‘breaking my arms and legs’ is not part of the job description!
You can catch the Little Flying Fishin all its retro ‘80s glory on Toggle TV!
How was it like working with the others in the production team?We worked with a Hong Kong movie director. I was nervous at first, but felt more relaxed after a while. He was a perfectionist, very meticulous and hands-on during filming. The producer was a very vocal lady and she was extremely organised. She was very professional and led the whole production crew very well. She also taught us basic acting skills. I was excited to get to know the cast and the rest of the crew just as much as meeting the lead actor and actress.
Tell us the difference between competing in reel life and in real life. They are poles apart. In reel life, we were just doing short bursts of speed swimming at one section of the pool. We had the luxury of doing a number of takes to make the shot perfect. But it was time consuming and can be frustrating at times.

Competitive swimming demands much more cardiovascular fitness and good technique in order to swim fast and effortlessly across the entire length of the pool, back and forth. Win or lose, it’s just one take!

With an almost fully-subscribed game, the Captain’s Day was another laudable success. Around 130 golfers took part in this shotgun game played in the individual stableford format. Though no one snagged the hole-in-one prize of a Yamaha Limited Edition golf set kindly sponsored by MST Golf, everyone was still thrilled with the close to 80 lucky draw prizes that were up for grabs; the top lucky draw prize was a set of TaylorMade RS 2i iron worth $1,600 sponsored by our very own member, Daniel Or.
