Cakes For Cause
Amy McKinney
What We’re About• Cakes for Cause is the result of the work of
many individuals who have been involved with young people in the child welfare system over the past 30 years. Our program is built upon a desire to provide meaningful services that help youth transition successfully into adulthood. Our vision is to build programming that is effective and creative and, through our commitment to social enterprise, is financially viable. We believe that the community is a critical piece of our program and by building a community gathering place, we draw them into our services…as loyal customers, volunteers and donors.
MissionOur program is built upon a desire to provide
meaningful services that help youth transition successfully into adulthood and to be open minded. Our vision is to build a strong program that is effective and creative and, through our commitment to social enterprise, is financially viable. We believe that the community is a critical piece of our program and by building a community gathering place for loyal customers, volunteers and donors.
As Executive Director, I personally think this is a great program and hope that there will soon be more programs like this. I can only hope that I explicate my passion for Cakes for Cause Cakes for Cause through this presentation.
How can you help?
In addition to supporting our bakery and eating cookies, there are additional ways to help the young people we serve every day. Apprentices in our program work up to 30 paid hours per week in our social enterprise and are provided with a full uniform, knife roll and curriculum materials. In addition to working as restaurant employees, our staff members mentor each apprentice and role model appropriate workplace behavior every day and are actively engaged in helping them reach their personal, vocational, and financial goals. Please consider donating to support our work through the links on our site, or by helping us acquire items that will benefit us in other ways.

activity such as our regular Friday night basketball game • $90 buys a pair of top quality chef shoes • $150 covers the full uniform costs for one apprentice • $1,000 supports an apprentice stipend for the first month of
the program • $7,000 gives an apprentice the opportunity to complete the
entire 6 month program
In-kind donations
Perhaps you have some items that you are finished with, but still have a useful life. Here are some things that we could put to good use. Please contact us if you would like to donate anything on this list:
• Filing cabinets • Printer and scanner • Outdoor square market canopy • Outdoor umbrellas • Sturdy shelving units
Community needs• Today, more then ever, we have students harming
themselves and each other. There are children fearful of the actions of class or outdoor bully natures. The community has problems with children bullying. These are kids acting out. This is a problem that usually comes from lack of discipline and positive reinforcements. These kids need to learn positive behaviors. This will benefit the individual as well as the community. Teaching children non-violent ways to spend their time at the same time teaching them to work together. Our community needs this kind of program, it would be beneficial in many ways.
• Our program is positive stimulation for the youth of the area. It gives them a positive meeting place where they can have fun, learn to form fair-minded judgments and to improve their skills in the pastry field.
Our program can show the youth of the community more positive possibilities that are available to them and helps them to aggrandize their views on their future.
INPUTSIn order to keep our program
running we need some of the following:
• Donations of time or money• Help from volunteers to keep
things running smoothly• Donations of used items such as
outdoor umbrellas, cabinets, etc.• Media coverage, to get our
message out there to more of the youth in our local area.
OUTPUTSOur outputs include:• A safe place for young people to spend free
time.• A program that can show the local youth more
positive options for their future.• A safe and constructive place for kids to turn
to in times of need.• A place where youth can learn to assess and learn to analyze the things that are going on around them.
Cakes for Cause & The Just Think Foundation
Cakes For Causeprogram is built upon a
desire to provide meaningful services that help youth transition successfully into adulthood
mentor and model to the youth in our program and teach them the pride and sense of accomplishment that comes from working in a fast-paced and busy restaurant.
Just Thinkteaches young people to
lead healthy, responsible, independent lives in a culture highly impacted by media.
develop and deliver cutting-edge curricula and innovative programs that build skills in critical thinking and creative media production.
Cakes for Cause & Just Think
I believe that cakes for cause would be a good match up with the Just Think Just Think
FoundationFoundation. I believe this because Just Think supports after school programs focusing on media. Although Cakes for Cakes for CauseCause doesn’t focus on media, it has a similar goal of giving youth an idea of
possible careers, also giving them positive ways to transition into being an
adult. The combination of Cakes for Cakes for Cause Cause and Just Think Just Think would be a great
match because together they could teach young people about more positive
possibilities for their future as well as teach them about the effects of media.
CRITICAL THINKING CRITICAL THINKING & CRITICAL ACTION& CRITICAL ACTIONCakes for Cause promotes both critical thinking and critical action. We promote critical thinking because in order for the
youth to take advantage of this program they realize that there are many different possibilities with what they can do with their time and effort. We also support critical action because every
time a young person interacts with our program they are making the choice to do something positive with their time and they are
learning about more possibilities for their future. For example when a kid chooses to come and participate in our program
instead of doing something else, the child is knowingly making the decision to be open minded about the pastry field and this shows that they are using critical thinking and thinking about
better decisions.
I hope this presentation answered any inquiries
