Trinity House is a 480 sq. ft. sustainable home on a typical urban Chicago lot 25ft x 130ft, based on the concept of a flexable and expandable space that could evolve according to the clients needs. The out-door areas of the house were treated as extensions of the interior spaces making use of the possible exten-sions towards the outdoors. Considerations included natrual light, the connection between the spaces and the relationship between the interior and exteriort

The focus of the project is the space in-between the façade and the public domain of a Chicago bungalow from a phenomenological point of view. The thesis is inspired by Gaston Bachelard’s book, “The Poet-ics of Space,” and is an innnovative way of looking at the relationship between humans and the landscape/garden. A thoughtful examination of the site is con-ducted in an effort to articulate a deeper and more pro-found understanding of the garden and the landscape.

Located in the Powerhose building in Chicago, Gallery Meier is a tourist and visitor’s cent er attributed to the architec-tural design theories of Richard Meier. The focus of the design concentrates on his unwaivering philosophy of color, light and place. The primary goal of this third year school project was space plan-ning and architectural drawing details.

The design of restaurant Laa, located in Laguna, CA, is based on the pro-cess one goes through during the three stages of falling in love: lust, attrac-tion and attachment. The overall design is rock and roll glamour with under-tones of Gothic. Warm wood floors, black granite, modern chandeliers and metalic fabrics are combined with highly reflective surfaces and glass walls uni-fy the rooms which are otherwise different. Each of the three rooms has a dedi-cated outdoor space that can be used for either lounging or dining. A definitive lack of “color” is purposely employed so the real “color” is the people within. The golden ratio was used to add a unique and attractive balance to the design.Lust, an emotional force that is directly associated with the thinking or fantasiz-ing about one’s desire, usually in a sexual way, is the first stage and the first of three rooms designed specifically to mimic the emotional response felt dur-ing this phase of falling in love. This area is the starkest and the largest of the rooms. The second stage is attraction. The room dedicated to this stage is small, quiet and intimate, a place where friendships and romantic relationships can be formed with the object of your lust. The third room is filled with 2 large tables, a glittering wall treatment, and roaring fireplace which serve to support the at-tachment phase of falling in love. This is a place to celebrate a union of love.

VAN TOL RESIDENCEp r o j e c t s t a t e m e n t
The interior design of this 1920’s Palm Beach home renovation is inspired by French engineer and designer, Jean Pourvre’s Structure Normand. The clients are a couple working in the arts and are collectors of mid-century funiture and specified the things that should drive the project. These included a high tech open floor plan, shelving for collectables, and sophisti-cated spaces that were linked to the exterior.
