experience their nice and simple life style. The village is approximately 3 km
from the bungalow.
2. Bahubal Baddhabhumi: A killing ground used by the Pakistani Army during
the Liberation War of 1971, within two km from the bungalow. A monument
has been erected by the Government of Bangladesh on the hill top. A nice and
serene place for some remembrance!
3. Baikka beel: Approx. 30 km north-east
from the bungalow, Baikka Beel sanctuary in
the Hail Haor wetlands offers a spectacular
view, especially in winter times, from the watch
tower prepared for bird watching.
4. Lawachara National Park (LNP): Approx. 20
km north-east from the bungalow, situated in
Srimanagal, Maulvibazaar. It is a Semi-
evergreen hilly forest of West Bhanugach
Reserve Forest. LNP is the home of Hoolock
GibbonBangladeshs lone ape species that was
once abundant in Lawachara. It is one of the
last standings of the tropical rain forests that
ruled the Sylhet region once upon a time.
5. Rema-Kalenga Wildlife Sanctuary: A
must go place for the high endurance thrill
seekers! Approx. 37 km east from the
bungalow is this much larger, wilder, remoter,
and far more adventurous place than LNP,
situated in Chunarughat, Habiganj. This wildlife
sanctuary is the home of Malayan Giant
Squirrel. If lucky, one may get across the rare
barking deer, fishing cat, or wild boar while walking
through the jungle trail or from the watch tower! The
Rema-Kalenga Wildlife Sanctuary is a part of the Tarap
Hill Reserved Forest- the largest remnant of upland true
natural forest in the country.
6. Madhavkunda Waterfalls: Approx. 60 km from the
bungalow, situated in Borolekha thana of Maulvibazaar

District. An attraction for a large number of visitors every year.
7. Madhavpur Lake: A local lake in
Maulvibazaar with beautiful sceneries and
famous for big and old Rui fishes. Evening boat
rides in the summer are very calm and
pleasant.
8. Neelkantha tea stall: The famous tea
stall at Srimangal town with special seven-
layered tea.
9. Sitesh Babus Zoo: A private zoo maintained by a hunter turned
conservationist named Sitesh Chandra Deb in Srimanagal town, Maulvibazaar.
The zoo hosts black bear, white fishing cat, Indian pythons (one caught from
this very garden!), monkeys, deer, and a number of birds. They represent the
endangered and almost extinct species of the local jungles.
10. Shamshernagar Airfield: Situated approx. 45
km north-east from the bungalow, is the
historic Shamshernagar airfield which was used
as an active airbase during the second Burma
Campaign of World War II by the Allied forces.
Several squadrons of combat cargo as well as
troop carrier groups ran their operation during
the turbulent times, mainly during 1943-45.
Even though BAF is holding the current airbase at the area, you can actually
watch the ruins of the WWII air strip from the road side! A short journey into
the history
11. Satchari National Park: A really
beautiful place with preserved natural forest
located approx. 50 kilometers south-west of
the bungalow. It is one of the few protected
areas being developed by the Forest
Department as part of a co-managed eco-
tourism project under its Nishorgo initiative.
SNP is considered to be one of the best bird
watching destinations in Bangladesh where one can have the sight of resident
Red Jungle Fowl, Red-headed Trogon, Oriental Pied Hornbill, Pygmy
Woodpecker and many more. Among many other local animals, the chief
attractions of the place are the Hoolock Gibbon (in local term, Ulluk) and

Phayres Leaf Monkey, a species of Langur. A visit to the tribal Tipra village
will deliver a good anthropological experience to the interested tourists.
12. Humhum Waterfall and Rajkandi Forest: The place
for ultimate adventure in Sylhet through untamed
jungle experience to visit a waterfall which is even more
magnificent than Madhavkunda! Situated in Rajkandi
forest under Kurma bit range in Moulvibazaaar, the
place is around two hours drive and three hours trek
away from the bungalow. Rajkandi and Humhum were
hidden from public exposure even until early 2011.
However, visiting this place requires a strong will power
and high endurance capacity to explore the natural
world. The prize of successfully completing the trek, however, is much more
rewarding than the toil with a memory to remember for the rest of your life.
13. Other attractions: Among other distant attractions, there are Jaflong, the
shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (Ra) and Hazrat Shahparan (ra), Uthla (the
flaming hill, and gas emitting pond near Haripur gas field) of Sylhet.
The following map locates most of the above mentioned visit spots:
