The ‘green’ business choice
For all its wealth of history, Amsterdam has always been a progressive city, squarely focused on the future. It’s no surprise, then, that Amsterdam’s MICE industry is embracing innovation to create sustainable events, making environmentally responsible decisions to contribute to the health of our planet.

Developments along the IJ waterfront
CGR offers independent adviceClear rules for any advertising during medical events announced in the Netherlands Code of conduct.
The Foundation for the Code for Pharmaceutical Advertis-ing (CGR) was founded to implement a Code of Conduct for pharmaceutical advertising. Organisers of medical events in Europe must now comply with the European regulations for advertising of medicinal products. Help with complyingHow can you ensure that your pharmaceutical-related con-ference or event does indeed comply with the regulations? ‘It is not as difficult as it may seem,’ says Janine Galjaard, Director of the Keuringsraad (advertising control body), responsible for the enforcement of the Netherlands’ Code of Conduct for Pharmaceutical Advertising. ‘Our pre-con-vention check offers additional certainty.’Detailed information about the rules for advertising during medical events in the Netherlands is available at www.cgr.nl (in English). For more information or tailor-made advice, please contact the CGR by telephone at +31 20 408 06 86 or via email at [email protected].
Amsterdam’s skyline will be enriched with two iconic buildings along the IJ waterfront, next to the EYE Film Institute and A’DAM Tower. One will be home to Maritim Amsterdam, the flagship congress and conference hotel for the award-winning Maritim Group. The second will be a high-quality residential building and offers apartments for everyone, from single apartments to family flats. The project, with its wide range of services and facilities covering approximately 70,000m2, will be designed by Team V Architecture. The completion of the entire project is expected in 2018.
Congress hotel fills city needAs Amsterdam currently lacks conference centres, the arrival of a congress hotel has been a high priority for the city. With 52,000m2 of space and some 600 four-star rooms, Maritim Amsterdam also fulfils the need for hotel rooms in the north-ern part of Amsterdam. The two congress halls, for 2,300 people and 1,300 people respectively, and facilities for up to 5,000 guests make Maritim Amsterdam one of the largest congress hotels in Europe – on top of being the flagship con-gress hotel for Maritim Hotels worldwide. With its experience in planning, organising and managing congresses and meet-
ings, Maritim Amsterdam will offer a rich event programme of congresses, keynote speakers, concerts, product launches, fashion shows and brand presentations. The hotel expects about 360,000 visitors per year and will work in close collabor-ation with the RAI and several hotels in Amsterdam. Eric van der Burg, deputy mayor City of Amsterdam: ‘Maritim Amster-dam will form an added value for the city of Amsterdam, as visitors of the congress hotel will visit the city and give a huge boost to the local economy.’ Living in the skyline of AmsterdamThe residential tower will provide about 23,000m2 of space and consist of around 220 apartments of different sizes and types, including penthouses, spacious apartments for fami-lies, small apartments for young professionals and serviced apartments. Living in one of the highest residential towers of Amsterdam will be a truly unique experience, with its outdoor terraces and fantastic view of the city. Unique hotel and housing conceptThe project is unique for its wide variety of facilities for guests as well as locals, including:Janine Galjaard, Director of the Advertising control body

Developments along the IJ waterfront
‘Creating a great environment to meet’ is the motto of Amsterdam RAI as the convention centre continues, together with event organisers, to realise its ambitions related to sustainability within the European conference and exhibition industry. The recently published RAI Sustainability Report (www.rai.nl/csr) describes the company’s CSR achievements to date, including 100% waste recycling, the installation of 1,632 solar panels, international sustainability certifications and an enhanced CSR policy.
Strong togetherThe CSR goal of Amsterdam RAI is, together with event organisers, to take every possible opportunity to make improvements, innovations, savings and connections that will optimise events. For example: - Reduce the amount of event waste together, and therefore reduce costs. - Increase the sustainability of catering by means of eco-friendly options within the range (including the Heartwarming Amsterdam catering concept). - Optimise accessibility together – for instance by offering travel deals in cooperation with Dutch rail company NS and the public transport companies in Amsterdam.
Best-in-class waste policyThe icing on the cake of last year’s efforts is that, together with its clients, Amsterdam RAI achieved zero waste. Since 2007, Amsterdam RAI has been actively optimising its waste policy, and the result is that the company has now achieved 100% recycling. At the same time, the total waste production was reduced by 30%. For an insight into the RAI and its CSR policy, check out the video or download the sustainability report: www.rai.nl/csr. Contact us to find out more about increasing the sustainability of your event at Amsterdam RAI.

• Several restaurants offering international and national cuisine as well as small bites
• A sky bar with a breathtaking view• Congress facilities in several sizes, including very large
conference halls• Meeting rooms for guests and locals in a unique location
with four-star service and quality• One of the most spectacular wellness and fitness areas in
the Netherlands, welcoming both hotel guests and locals• A wide variety of apartments of different types and sizes,
including terraces with a spectacular view in all directions• In addition, the adjacent park will be the green heart of the
neighbourhood and a place for recreation and vitalisation for all.
Overhoeks: Amsterdam’s ‘red-hot art neighbourhood’The project is located in Overhoeks, the lively new neighbour-hood in the northern part of Amsterdam along the IJ water-front. With the arrival of the eye-catching EYE Film Institute, the transformation of the former Shell headquarters building into A’DAM (the epicentre of electronic and dance music), the NDSM shipyard-turned-glitzy industrial beehive plus all the
emerging new bars and restaurants, Amsterdam’s northern half is often referred to as one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in the world. The New York Times called the area, the ‘red-hot art neighbourhood’ and Amsterdam’s new creative centre. The pro-ject will give a huge boost to both its immediate area and the wider city, combining all the benefits of living in an international city with the advantages of a high quality of life. Together with the City of Amsterdam, the partners are working hard to further develop and position of Overhoeks as the city’s signature area.
Central locationThe ferry is only a few steps away and connects the area with Central Station. The North/South metro connection, which will link up the southern and northern halves of Amsterdam, will be completed in 2017. The new metro station will be just a ten-minute walk away. Getting to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol takes under half an hour. These public trans-port connections, in combination with the underground parking garage for around 540 cars, will support the sophisticated mobility concept that guarantees the minimum pos-sible impact of noise and traffic.
Rientz Mulder, Executive Chef

Time frame Construction of Motel One began in January 2014. The building is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2015. SIR HOTELS OPENS SECOND HOTEL – SIR ADAM – IN AMSTERDAMThe European lifestyle boutique hotel Sir will debut a second hotel – Sir Adam – to be located in the A’DAM tower, one of Amsterdam’s most promising upcoming hotspots. The new hotel is scheduled to open in 2016. Sir Albert and Sir AdamSir Hotels is a boutique brand rooted in Amsterdam. In 2013, the first Sir hotel opened in De Pijp, a neighbour-hood in Amsterdam defined by artists, fashion designers, entrepreneurs and the famous Albert Cuyp Market. It was this market that gave the hotel its name: Sir Albert. In 2016, the Sir Adam hotel is expected to open in the A’DAM tower. According to a press release announcing the arrival of Sir Adam, the hotel will provide an ‘integrat-ed lifestyle experience with 110 stylish guest rooms and
creative spaces offering breathtaking views over Amster-dam. Guests and locals alike will delight in his restaurant, terrace and destination bar.’
Amsterdam’s new cultural hotspotThe location Sir Adam has chosen is indeed breathtak-ing. Previously known as Toren Overhoeks, the A’DAM tower is an eye-catching office complex located directly opposite Amsterdam Central Station, across the River IJ. Built in 1969, the building is 80 metres tall and was de-signed by the architect Arthur Staal. Its large-scale reno-vation started in the summer of 2014; it will eventually reopen as A’DAM at the end of 2015. The most spectacu-lar plans for the building include the transformation of its upper floors into a rotating observation deck, providing spectacular 360-degree views of the river, docklands and historic city centre.
Where work meets playA’DAM will also be home to two nightclubs (‘Heaven’ and ‘Hell’), restaurants and office spaces. Creative industry titans such as Massive Music and ID&T are set to establish offices there, and they will be joined by a medley of promising start-ups from the dance and music industry. AMSTERDAM RAI EXPANDS WITH ON-SITE HOTELThe Amsterdam RAI Exhibition & Convention Centre has confirmed new plans for expansion. The envisioned on-site four-star hotel will offer a minimum of 650 rooms and construction is slated to begin in mid-2016. Amsterdam: a top city for conferencesThe expansion of Amsterdam RAI will likely prove to
be beneficial for the city’s position as one of the leading conference locations in Europe. The number of congress visitors in Amsterdam is already steadily increasing each year.
Integrating the hotel into its surroundingsAccording to a press release, construction is slated to begin in mid-2016. Klaas de Boer, director of the Municipal Zuidas Development Office, and Amsterdam RAI’s general director, Hans Bakker, officially launched a joint tender for the construction of the new hotel at the real estate conven-tion PROVADA. They aim for a plan that is both bold and viable, integrates the hotel into its immediate environment at the RAI and offers added value to the city of Amsterdam.
The tenderThe procedure will comprise a public pre-selection followed by a closed final selection; the Municipality of Amsterdam and Amsterdam RAI hope to finalise the tender and begin drawing up the plans in early 2015. Schiphol expands with new pier and terminalAmsterdam Airport Schiphol has announced plans to expand with the construction of a new pier and terminal to keep up with the increase of passenger numbers and freight. Market consultationIn a statement, Schiphol invited possible partners and suppliers to contribute ideas for the construction of the new pier and terminal, which will be situated on the south side of the airport, as well as for the associated tendering process. The market consultation took place on Thursday, 11 September 2014. GrowthPresently, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the fourth busi-est airport in Europe, and the number of passengers trav-elling through the award-winning airport increases every year. In 2013, the airport welcomed more than 52.5 million passengers, representing a 3% growth in comparison to 2012. The number of passengers is expected to increase even further – to around 65 million – over the course of the next decade. Central locationSchiphol’s central location is one of the reasons for the airport’s success. Most crucial business destinations within Europe are a mere two hours’ flight time away. Schiphol serves more than 300 destinations around the world with almost 100 airlines.
Record number of electrically powered taxis at SchipholFrom now on, passengers at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol can opt for electrically powered taxis operated by BBF Schipholtaxi or BIOS-groep. The two companies will jointly offer passenger transport services with a fleet of 167 Tesla Model S taxis. Schiphol is the only airport in the world to offer a comparable service: no other airport has a fleet of sustainable taxis this size. The electrically powered taxis provide a significant boost to sustainable mobility at the airport. ‘The new fleet of 100 per cent electrically powered Teslas allows passengers to continue their journey from Schiphol in total comfort. At Schiphol, high-quality transport and an environmental conscience go hand in hand. This represents a crucial step in our efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and become one of the world’s three most
sustainable airports,’ explained Jos Nijhuis, Schiphol Group’s president and CEO. The zero-emission taxis will be serving Schiphol for a period of at least four years, with an optional extension of up to eight years.
Check-in to sustainabilitySchiphol Group anticipates and is investing in a sustainable future for the airport. Schiphol Group facilitates connections – connections between the Netherlands and the rest of the world and connections between people. Schiphol Group conducts its operations with respect for people, the environment and its neighbours, both through independent initiatives and in close cooperation with passengers and airport business partners.

Amsterdam 2015
CREATIVE, DETERMINED AND OPEN-MINDED
In 2015 Amsterdam will focus on the creativity, determination and open-mindedness that have characterised city life here through the ages. In February, the Rijksmuseum celebrates the genius of maverick Golden Age painter Rembrandt van Rijn with a major retrospective of his later works, while 19th-century genius Vincent van Gogh – who died 125 years ago in 2015 – will have a major exhibition in September at the museum that bears his name, together with Norwegian painter Edvard Munch. Other landmark events include the 120th birthday of the Stedelijk Museum and 50 years of the National Opera, while SAIL Amsterdam sees the world’s finest sailing vessels, historical and modern, moored here from 19 to 23 August.
Amsterdam 2016: international city of diversity In the year the Netherlands becomes president of the European Union for six months, Amsterdam celebrates the city’s diversity. Since the Golden Age, Dutch creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit have made Amsterdam a melting pot of nationalities – 180 at the latest count. As well as many international meetings, the city plays host to Europride and the European Athletics Championships, and 2016 also offers visitors the chance to get to know the city from its diverse residents’ perspective: what is the favourite restaurant of Sjaan from the Jordaan? The best Moroccan restaurant, according to Mohammed or the best Italian according to Leonardo and the best English pub, according to John? Amsterdam’s residents are central to the theme, but also the diversity of the city’s many functions, the diversity of cultural offerings and diversity of business will be presented to the world.

Late RembrandtFor the first time, the Rijksmuseum will present a major retrospective of Rem-brandt van Rijn’s later work, a period in which the painter experimented with graphic and painting techniques. In col-laboration with The National Gallery in London, the exhibition Late Rembrandt presents a comprehensive overview of the Master’s work, from around 1652 until his death in 1669. The paintings he produced during these years are among his most celebrated, and continue to define the lasting influence of the painter on modern audiences.12 February-17 May 2015Rijksmuseum
Digital catwalkAn overview of the Rijksmuseum’s enormous collection of beautiful fashion
prints, both digitally and on paper. The museum acquired two large collec-tions from the leading collectors of fashion prints, the Raymond Gaudriault Collection and the Ghering-Van Ierlant Collection. These acquisitions allow the museum to show on paper the major developments in fashion, for both women and men, from around 1600 up to the early 20th century.June-September 2015Rijksmuseum
The iron century – the beginnings of the modern-day NetherlandsThe innovations that took place in the 19th century in the Netherlands are essential for the country that we know today. From royalty to the constitution, from the first steps towards democracy to the breakthrough of political parties,
from private initiatives to state interven-tion in social care – all these develop-ments originated in the 19th century. This exhibition takes a fresh look at a period that has long been seen as narrow-minded and dull, but is actually of great influence on our present day. Mid-February-30 August 2015Amsterdam Museum
Football HalleluyahFootball has long taken the place of religion for many dedicated fans. Com-panionship with other fans provides the same sense of belonging and togeth-erness as a church community. This exhibition offers, among many surpris-ing facts and stories about soccer, a fun and interactive experience for young and old.Until 11 January 2015Amsterdam Museum

Amsterdam has been known as ‘the City of Diamonds’ for over 425 years, and in the greenest museum quarter of Amsterdam known as De Plantage, you’ll find Gassan Diamonds. Housed in a formerly steam-driven diamond factory, originally build in 1879, the Gassan diamond factory is the oldest in Amsterdam.
Each day, Gassan Diamonds offers free diamond tours led by expert guides in multiple languages. Visitors can admire diamond polishers at work and learn what determines the quality of diamonds and their value.
Gassan Diamonds can also provide special business-to-business activities for both small and large groups, including:
• Organise your meeting in Amsterdam’s oldest diamond factory.
• Add lunch or a cocktail to complete your programme.
• Combine the diamond experience with an exciting Diamond and Champagne Surprise cocktail, particularly suitable for incentive events. One genuine brilliant-cut diamond is placed in a cocktail glass, while the rest have a synthetic stone. Once everyone has enjoyed their champagne, a diamond expert checks the stones and reveals the lucky winner of the real diamond. Enjoy a special lecture by a watch expert about the Haute Horlogerie, covering multiple or one specific brand. He will explain the latest
designs, trends and technical developments of watch-making.
• An exclusive collection of watches will also be shown.
• Gassan Diamonds specialises in providing tailor-made gifts of outstanding quality.
• Premium services – for example, anniversary programmes and after-sales service – are also available.
• Organise employee teambuilding events.
Arrive at or leave Gassan Diamonds the Dutch way: rent a bike, have a canal cruise or visit by tourist bus. Parking facilities, including for buses, and a mooring site for canal boats are available. Gassan Diamonds is open seven days a week, 09.00-17.00.
