Dear Colleagues and Friends, It is our great pleasure to invite you to participate in the 46th EDSA meeting which will be held in Amsterdam between the 22nd and 25th of August 2010. The 36th Annual Meeting of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) is going to be held right after the EDSA Meeting, from the 25th to 28th of August. The Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) will have the honour to host the EDSA delegates from each European country member, that gather twice a year in a different city to discuss the current problems of the European dental students, find solutions to improve the dental education and promote/ share national projects. As all of you know ACTA is going to move into a new building in July. As a participant of this meeting, you will be part of the very exceptional few to visit our brand-new building firstly. The theme of both Meetings is “Digital Dentistry”. Are you interested in the past, present and future developments of technology, dental materials and techniques? Then don’t miss it out, because there will be many interesting lectures and workshops which will give you an overview of the developments in the world of Digital Dentistry. After the serious part comes the fun part and we have planned a lot of great events and EDSA parties for you. We will also have a dinner and party on the waters of Amsterdam. All participants will stay at the 3-star IBIS hotel which is centrally situated by Amsterdam Central Station and the hotspots. Each hotel room can accommodate 3 people. Please find enclosed to this Invitation Letter all information regarding EDSA, Preliminary Programme, Application fees and Contacts of the upcoming event. The registration deadline is 15th of July 2010. Further information about this biggest event of summer 2010 is available at the Amsterdam Meeting website www.edsa2010.com. EDSA International Network

What is EDSA? European Dental Students` Association (EDSA) is a non-profitable, non-political organization. It was founded in 1988 in Paris and has a reliable network of more than 65,000 dental students in 182 dental schools in 26 countries. The registered offices of the Association are established in Dublin, Ireland. The Aim The primary aim is to promote and develop international contacts and to exchange ideas, as well as to improve the knowledge of dental students. The association also aims to introduce students to the dental industry and educational system of other countries, creating a globally connected student community. The People The whole EDSA International Network is borne by the nonsalaried work, the organizational talent and the commitment of its members. The members of EDSA are willing to broaden their horizons by visiting different cultures and educational systems and by working together in multicultural teams during EDSA workshops. Delegates representing each country are both active on national and European level, promote student activities and establishing and developing close relations with professional and academic authorities and associations. Meetings & Congresses EDSA delegates from each member country gather twice a year in a different European city and discuss current dental and educational affairs, make suggestions on future activities, promote solutions and make decisions. The autumn EDSA Meeting is held immediately before each Association for Dental Education (ADEE) Annual Meeting which allows sufficient time for students to discuss the relevant ADEE scientific theme and then facilitate a number of students’ participation in the working and special interest groups at the ADEE Meeting. The greatest event however in EDSA is the Congress, a meeting open to all Dental Students that takes place every two years. Dental Education Involvement

EDSA is always in a state of action, full of energy and spirit having been involved in dental education affairs for many years. EDSA held and moderated one of the fourteen working groups on topic “Academic environment: Student perspective” during the Global Congress on Dental Education III that took place in Dublin in September 2007. The EDSA WG discussed and documented online for one year what is a “positive academic environment” from the students’ point of view: dental school programs, settings, courses, evaluations etc. The paper, proposing effective strategies and educational innovations, was finalized during the Global Congress and later on published in the European Journal of Dental Education. Moreover, EDSA has many interesting projects that provide dental students with the opportunity to actively participate, contribute and express their opinion. At this point we would like to put more light on our current projects and briefly present them. EDSA Projects Dental Guide EDSA has actively been influencing dental education in Europe in cooperation with organizations such as ADEE and participating in Dent-Ed in relation to the student academic environment. Students could contribute a lot to the European Integration and standardization of Dental Education. In this direction EDSA continues once again “The Dental Guide”, an ambitious project of major importance to the establishment of a globally connected student and young dentists’ community. A database consisting of general country information, different dental educational systems, admission and final exams, postgraduate specialties, student and dentists associations’ contacts are available on the EDSA web page. European Visiting Program (EVP) For many years EDSA has strongly devoted itself to improving student mobility. The European Visiting Program (EVP) is an EDSA exchange program, which gives students the opportunity to visit other dental faculties in foreign countries for a couple of days or weeks with educational purpose. Students get the chance to broaden their views, develop ability to adapt to another environment and make new friends. In such a way, presenting culture, diversity and different habits of the different European people, boundaries are overcome and movement becomes easier. Prevention Program Awareness of the importance of prevention in dental medicine has inspired EDSA members to start the prevention program “SM!LE”. Under the motto “Oral health for students” dental students give information on oral hygiene as well as free consultation and basic dental treatment to their non-dental colleagues. The project is supported by the European Federation of Periodontology and Association for Dental Education in Europe and promotional materials, oral care products and cross infection control products are provided by sponsors.

Voluntary Work Voluntary work is our new focus with the good cause to activate students in world health issues and encourage them to be a helping hand. There are literally billions of people who have absolutely no access to dental care. Most are simply resigned to suffering. By providing free dental student care to the less privileged around the world, we are happy to serve the humanity. Dental Ethics Day EDSA recently became a member of FDI World Dental Federation. EDSA members promote FDI Dental Ethics Manual and work on realization of the Dental Ethics Day in European dental schools by preparing brochures and workshops for their fellow students with the idea of presenting the right way of behaving in different situations between dentist and his patients, colleagues and society as well as explaining ethics in research. Green Dentistry “Green Dentistry - Environmentally Responsible Dental Practice” is a project that operates under the auspices of the EDSA and the EU, through the „Youth” program. Currently, the countries which adopted this project are Croatia, Sweden, the Netherlands, UK, and Greece. Main domains are to increase the „environmental awareness” and sensitivity among the dental professionals; the encouragement of procedures, regulations and policies compatible with the EU strategy for „sustainable development”; production of electronic and printed informative material to address and communicate the information to the dental society, particularly towards dental students and young dentists. Another essential goal of the “Green Dentistry” project is the establishment of a network of cooperation, exchange information and opinions, proposals and innovations concerning the „Environmentally responsible dental practice” in Europe and international. Personal Protective Equipment in Dentistry In everyday practice, dentists, dental personnel and patients are constantly exposed to various chemical, biological and physical agents. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) includes gloves, eye-wear, masks, and clinic attire. By studying, comparing and standardizing the control measure protocol in all European dental schools, EDSA main objective is to reduce the risk of occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials among employees and students. Local Anesthesia Survey A survey of European dental students’ opinions on their local anesthesia teaching programs among European dental schools. The comparison of the various dental curricula may offer ideas for improving local anesthesia teaching.

Research projects & Awareness campaigns EDSA is to initiate research projects and awareness campaigns that are started at a national level and later introduced to EDSA, leading to a European comparison in that specific subject. During the last 10 years some of the big EDSA projects were the Anti-Tobacco Campaign, Survey of dental students’ HIV-related attitudes, knowledge and practices, Stress provoking factors in dental education and many more. EDSA Publications EDSA Magazine The EDSA Magazine is published twice a year, and over 20,000 copies reach dental students at every dental school throughout Europe. Consisting of different sections where students have a chance to present their own projects, achievements and innovations as well as interesting experiences from international EDSA events, the magazine is targeted at our members as a dental-related publication that they will enjoy reading in their spare time. Scientific news, research, special events in each country and brainstorming ideas are virtually reaching everyone. EDSA Newsletter The Newsletter is a short bulletin to be written by a member of the Executive Committee, informing all delegates of what has been happening in the EDSA between meetings. It is published once between each meeting. In the spirit of expanding EDSA all over Europe, we constantly seek for new ideas, members and sponsors to help us helping other students; we feel that we are not the agents of change, but the innovators of change in Europe without borders. For further information on EDSA, its network, people and projects, please visit our website http://www.edsaweb.org.
