Areas for Consideration in Strategic Planning Adult Faith Formation

• The AMS Thematic Calendar is a tool for you to consider having adult faith formation, bible study or some form of faith sharing for parents and adults in general while youth and children are in religious education.

• Adults, youth and children could be learning the same topic so that they can talk about their learning experience on their way home, at dinner table or during family time.

• The themes can also be reinforced by the priest in the homily. • VLCFF and CDU provide quality faith formation courses online for adults.

AMS Family Faith Assessment

• Gather families in the beginning of the year to introduce the Assessment • The Assessment supports families to grow in knowledge, understanding and living out

the Catholic faith online and at home. • Motivate families (grades Pre-K to 12) to engage one another with this online resource. • They will love learning the faith in a fun and dynamic way.

Parent Meetings (Sacramental Prep)

• Build a strong partnership with the family to support faith learning at home using the AMS Family Faith Assessment.

• Faith formation in preparation for the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) is integral to the AMS Forming Disciples for the New Evangelization: Archdiocesan Religion Curriculum Guide. See Standard 3 on the Sacraments and Standard 4 on the Liturgy.

• Regardless of sacramental preparation, parent meetings are vital. Major feasts of the church are a great time to do Catholic faith community wide catechesis: the weekend after Christmas, Easter; the weekend of Pentecost. Include a Meet and Greet gathering

in the beginning of the year. Prayer and orientation to the AMS Family Faith Assessment should be part of the agenda.

• Schedule gatherings with the whole family throughout the year to pray, share faith and information and celebrate as a community.

Catechist Training

• Catechists are required to take one five-week course or two three-week seminars to meet the requirement for AMS Basic Catechist Certification.

• The 14 Standards are a guiding tool for catechist faith formation. • There are courses online for each of the 14 Standards. See the correlation to VLCFF and

CDU courses for guidance. • Have the catechists do the Self Inventory to assess their areas of strengthen and

opportunities for growth. • Other opportunities for catechist in-service may be the weekend before class start (to

go over the expectations for the catechetical year), the weekend before Advent (to plan the season) and the weekend before Lent (to plan the season). Do you want to have special celebrations during these important liturgical seasons?

Catechetical Leadership Development (Conferences and Certificate in Catechesis)

• The communication, collaboration and consultation between the priest and the lay catechetical leader will model team work for the catechists and families in the program.

• The ministry of the catechetical leader is valuable and vital for the success of the faith formation program.

• Consider enrolling in the Certificate in Catechesis Program through CDU or VLCFF. • Consider attending the LA Religious Education Congress, the Mid-Atlantic Congress or

the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership (NCCL). The local civilian diocese may have workshops, conferences or retreat days you may want to attend. Find opportunities to nourish your spiritual life and to strengthen your skills.
