He general surgical training and trauma/critical care fellowship at Baylor and Boston University and then began his academic career at the faculty of University of Massachusetts Medical School .he was asked to assume the position as Division Chief of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care where he built a successful ACS Level One Trauma Center, and a surgical critical care fellowship. In addition, he started an active research program utilizing animal models of trauma. In 1997, Dr. Cohn assumed the role of Medical Director of the Ryder Trauma Center, as the Robert Zeppa Endowed Professor of Surgery at the University of Miami and ran the Divisions of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care.. Dr. Cohn has over 200 publications, extensive funded research, is a member of many professional organizations, and is a reviewer for numerous journals, among many other activities. His academic and research interests are in the areas of: trauma and combat casualty care and surgical infections. He has been the recipient of several teaching awards, including the Teacher of the Year awards at University of Massachusetts, Yale and a Lifetime Achievement in Education award from University of Miami Department of Surgery. He also has trained a large number (~100) of ICU, Trauma, and Research Fellows.

Dr. Coimbra also has a Master’s Degree and a Doctorate Degree from Santa Casa School of Medicine in Sao Paulo. Dr. Coimbra is the author of more than 240 published articles and is a member of the editorial board of the Pan American Journal of Trauma. Dr. Coimbra was previously Director of Surgical Critical Care at UCSD Medical Center and has more than 16 years of experience as a trauma surgeon and in the care of critically ill ICU patients. Dr. Coimbra has developed into a national leader in trauma surgery during his tenure here at UCSD. Dr. Coimbra is now serving as a Chairman of the Medical Audit Committee, which is the mechanism to perform quality assurance countywide in trauma. Dr. Coimbra’s goal is to work with nurses, nutritionists, respiratory therapists, physicians, and other ancillary personnel to make the SICU a strong quality program.

PAULA A. FERRADA, MD (USA) Dr. Paula A. Ferrada serves as physician with the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Hospitals and Physicians. Originally from Cali, Colombia, Dr. Ferrada graduated top of her class as a Doctor of Medicine from Universidad Del Valle Medicine in 2001. An expert in trauma medicine, Dr. Paula Ferrada possesses certification in Fundaments of Laparoscopic Surgery, Advanced Trauma Operative Management (ATOM), Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET), and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS). She also functions as an American College of Surgeons Ultrasound Instructor and as an instructor of ATLS and ATOM. Completing a surgical internship with Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Dr. Paula A. Ferrada also finished a surgical residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. She served as Chief Resident at Beth Israel and participated in a fellowship with the University of Pittsburgh Department of Critical Care. Prior to her role with the Medical College of Virginia, she assisted at the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center as their first fellow in acute care surgery. JORGE ESTEBAN FOIANINI, MD, FACS (BOLIVIA) Director General de la Clínica, el Dr. Jorge Esteban Foianini Gutiérrez, Cirujano General reconocido por su experiencia y conocimiento en Cirugía Digestiva, Trauma, Endócrina, Oncológica y Laparoscópica. Richmond, VA A graduate of one of the oldest Medical Schools in India, he did his surgical residency in New Delhi , India and repeated another residency at Lincoln Hospital in Bronx, New York. His experience in Trauma and Critical Care stems from two decades he had spent in the South Bronx ( the “Fort Apache: The Bronx”) during one of its most violent times. Dr. Ivatury is an active researcher and takes great interest in student and resident teaching. He was nominated twice for the “distinguished clinician of the year”. JOHN B KORTBEEK B.MED.SC., MD FRCSC FACS, (CANADA) John B Kortbeek MD is a graduate of the University of Alberta. He completed a transitional residency at St. Thomas Hospital , Akron Ohio (1985) and a General Surgery residency at the University of Calgary (1989). He trained as a critical care fellow at the University of Calgary and as a Trauma fellow at Carraway Methodist Medical Centre. He has held an appointment at the University of Calgary since 19991 and is currently a Professor in the Departments of Surgery and Critical Care. Dr. Kortbeek has served as regional Trauma Services Director for Calgary as well as director of the Intensive Care unit at the Foothills Medical Centre. He currently serves as Head of the Department of Surgery for the University of Calgary and for the Calgary Zone, Alberta Health Services. Dr Kortbeek is a recipient of the American College of Surgeon’s Committee on Trauma Meritorious Achievement Award. ARI LEPPÄNIEMI (Finlandia) Ari Leppäniemi is Chief of Emergency Surgery at the Helsinki University Hospital, Finland. He is the Past-President of the Finnish Society of Surgery, International Association for Trauma Surgery and Intensive Care (IATSIC), and the European Association for Trauma and Emergency Surgery (EATES). He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Scandinavian Journal of Surgery, Editor of the European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery, and Associate Editor of the World Journal of Surgery. He has published over 120 original articles and more than 200 reviews and book chapters, mostly on abdominal trauma, acute pancreatitis and abdominal compartment syndrome. In 1984 he joined the department of surgery at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He completed his residency in general surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital, McGill University, and his Clinical Trauma and Critical Care fellowship at Yale University. In 1992 Dr. Puyana joined the University of Massachusetts as assistant professor with a dual appointment as an instructor at Harvard University and Director of the Surgical ICU at the West Roxbury VA Medical Center. In 1998, Dr. Puyana was appointed assistant professor of surgery at Harvard University and became the director of the surgical critical care program at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He started the surgical critical care fellowship program at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital which became certified by ACGMED in 1999. Dr. Puyana became an associate researcher in the Center for Integration in Medicine and Innovative Technology (CIMIT) and became the Director of the Combat Casualty Care and Critical Care research core of CIMIT from 1999 to 2001.
