    The End Has Come

Critics of religion have sometimes charged that religious people believe

in a God created in their own image, a God they have fashioned forthemselves to satisfy their desires. Amos would have agreed with thatassessment when he looked at the religion of the people of Israel in themid-eighth century b . c . Amos saw much in the culture of his day that indi-cated that the god the people of Israel worshiped was not the true God.The people were greedy for luxury, engaged in unjust actions against thepoor, and hungry for self-satisfaction at others expense. They worshipeda god who did not mind whether they lived that way as long as they paidhim proper homage in regular, beautiful worship services. Although theyclaimed to worship the true God and even put on elaborate worship ser-vices to show they did, their actions in daily life showed that their worshipwas hypocritical. With actions like these, how could they claim to worshipa God who said, Since there will never cease to be some in need on theearth, I therefore command you, Open your hand to the poor and needyneighbor in your land (Deuteronomy 15:11, nrsv )?

The god the people of Israel worshiped during Amoss time was notthe God who had taken Amos from tending the flock and had com-manded him to prophesy Gods message (Amos 7:15). For Amos, Godcould not be tamed to fit with human desires. The God whose mes-sage Amos delivered would not put his stamp of approval on the greed, prejudice, and power plays of human culture in exchange for elaboratesacrifices and regular attendance at the worship services. Amoss God wasnot a tame God. Indeed, the God whom Amos served was a God who

roars (Amos 1:2). Amos said (3:8) that, like a lion, this God has roared. The whole Book of Amos is about the roaring of this God against his

people Gods own people , let us note. Amos, the first of the writingprophets, burst upon the eighth-century scene with a powerful and pow-erfully unpopular message from God. God was fed up with the peoples

20 Amos: The End Has Come

mistreatment of the poor and the powerless, fed up with the luxuriousliving of some of the people at the expense of others, and fed up with

these peoples thinking they could get away with it if they just sprinkled afew grains of religion on their sorry behavior.Gods attitude was not based on whim, either. When God had entered

into covenant with Israel, God had made clear the kind of behaviorexpected. Israel had simply disobeyed and had done so flagrantly.

Thus, Gods message through Amos was, the end. Gods bite waseven worse than his roar. Because of Israels evil behavior, the end wascoming upon the nation of Israel. Israel could not count on some pre-

sumed special relationship with God to forestall it, either. So Amos cried(4:12, nrsv ): Prepare to meet your God, O Israel! These words were nota call for repentance but a warning of the end. As the Lord said to Amos(8:2, nrsv ), The end has come upon my people Israel; I will never againpass them by. These are sober, challenging wordswords Israel did notwant to hear. Likely we dont want to hear Amoss words either.

As you study the Scriptures from Amos, ask yourself, How would theGod of Amos relate to us and our culture? After studying Amos, we mayalso want to tell Amos, Go back where you came from and prophesy there (7:12).

Frankly, we tend to want the god of the status quo of the privileged, the god Israel worshiped. We want to feel that God thinks a whole lot likeus. We also want to feel that this God is for us and our ways. The idea thatGod may be against us because of our sins, including our sins against ourfellow human beings and especially the most vulnerable people of our

society, has never been popular. Today is no exception. These desires of ours mean that the prophet Amos has much to say to us if were willing tohear itand even if were not.

Lesson one, No Exceptions, deals with Amos 1:13:2 and empha-sizes that all peopleeven those who consider themselves Godspeopleare accountable to God for their behavior, with no exceptions.Lesson two, The Religion God Despises, points out that God does nothonor worship disconnected from living justly in daily life. Lesson three,

Dont Preach to Us About That , is on Amoss encounter with the reli-gious leadership of the day who, allied with the governmental leadership, rejected Gods message. This lesson calls us to consider how we may berefusing to hear Gods message ourselves in our corporate and personallives.

2 He said:The Lord roars from Zion

Because they have rejected the law of the Lordand have not kept his decrees,

because they have been led astray by false gods, the gods their ancestors followed,

5 I will send fire upon Judahthat will consume the fortresses of Jerusalem.

6 This is what the Lord says:For three sins of Israel,

even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. They sell the righteous for silver,

and the needy for a pair of sandals.7

They trample on the heads of the pooras upon the dust of the groundand deny justice to the oppressed.

Father and son use the same girland so profane my holy name.

8 They lie down beside every altaron garments taken in pledge.

In the house of their godthey drink wine taken as fines.

9 I destroyed the Amorite before them, though he was tall as the cedarsand strong as the oaks.

I destroyed his fruit aboveand his roots below.

10 I brought you up out of Egypt, and I led you forty years in the desertto give you the land of the Amorites.

11 I also raised up prophets from among your sonsand Nazirites from among your young men.

Is this not true, people of Israel?declares the Lord .

12 But you made the Nazirites drink wineand commanded the prophets not to prophesy.

    13

Now then, I will crush youas a cart crushes when loaded with grain.14 The swift will not escape,

the strong will not muster their strength, and the warrior will not save his life.

15 The archer will not stand his ground, the fleet-footed soldier will not get away, and the horseman will not save his life.

16 Even the bravest warriorswill flee naked on that day,

    declares the Lord .

28 Amos: The End Has Come

th n m rical Sa i gCareful readers of Amos 12 quickly detect the standardized formor patterned way in which Amos expressed the judgment sayingson the nations. The phrase, for three sins . . . even for four, beginsall eight pronouncements. Amos was the only prophet in the OldTestament to use this literary device.

This kind of numerical saying ( n and n + 1 ) was a favorite tool of the wisdom teachers in Israel (Job 5:19; Proverbs 6:1619; 30:1517,1820, 2123, 2931). They used it to organize a number of items forconsideration and reflection. Favorite numbers used by them werethree/four and six/seven. The numbers should not be taken literally.

Amos did not mean that God would forgive three of their sins butnot the fourth one. He used the numerical saying to assert that thesinfulness of the nations had reached a saturation point with God.God had had enough of their rebellion and determined to punishthem.

Your sons and other neighborhood boys are playing footballin your yard when rough tackling causes tempers to flare. All theparticipants share in the blame of the fight that results. How do yourespond?

Discipline no one (boys will be boys).

    Discipline your kids only.

Discipline your kids and other kids equally.

Discipline all the kids but your kids more firmly.

My now adult sons could reveal to you what I chose to do. Weknow what our heavenly Father does.
