The Metropole OrkestConducted by Jules Buckley

Page 3: Amos_ Gold Dust

20 years ago, when Lit tle Earthquakes was released in the states, I was touring alone with just a piano on stage.A passion I remember having was to play these songs one day with an orchestra.I wondered if it could still feel intimate with over 50 people playing on the stage together.

When the Metropole Orchestra called and invited me to bring the song girls and play with them, the f irst idea that came to my mind was that of a Memory Box and a desire to desig n a sonic one.So I called up philly (JPS) and we talked about picking songs that we could tailor specif ically for the Metropole.

In rehearsals with the orchestra, I was startled at f irst because as we began playing songs that I knew quite well structurally, I began to see new pictures in my mind as the sound of the instruments roared through my veins. It was as if the orchestra were revealing to me subtle meanings of my own songs I had not yet discovered. This is when collaboration turns into an intimate back and forth conversation. Alex from DG said, “have you thought of capturing these sonic conversations in a studio properly with these arrangements?”

More songs stepped forward for the studio sessions in Holland. Many of these songs were writ ten out of having conversations with people at stage doors, standing somewhere having a cup of cof fee, when someone comes up to you and tells you their story. And a lot of times I don’t ever see them again and yet they have changed my perspective in just a few minutes.

I guess in a way Gold Dust is about celebrating over 20 years of all the conversations that have happened which inspired many of these songs. And it’s a collection of new recordings of where they are now and who they have become.
