USE OF COMPACT MATERIALSIN BUILDING, ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN

WHERE IN BUILDING, ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN CAN COMPACT MATERIALS BE USED? where there are straight boards glued together to

make various objects in interior - jointless elements with high use, image and design quality can arise.

where there is an aim to combine materials and achieve higher functional perfection of some interior parts.

where there is an aim to achieve extraordinary perfection and shape unity not only in the objects’ size but also in the freedom in interior shaping when designing interiors.

where there is an aim to brighten designed objects completely or only individual parts of them and move the interior modelling to an absolutely different level.

where there is an aim to combine various colours and maintain a tight shape simultaneously.

where there is necessary to achieve hygienic and aseptic environment without and possibility of settlement and growth of bacteria.

where there are extreme requirements on outer face from architects and designers.

IN WHAT KIND OF OBJECTS IT CAN BE USED? In commercial objects (multifunctional buildings, hotels, health care, restaurants, public areas, etc.) outer and inner facing all sorts of receptions

Organicity and unity of shape, new possibilities in manufacturing, extraordinary freedom – in these words the work with compact materials, such as CORIAN® or HI-MACS, STARON, SOLID STONE can be described.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CORIAN® MATERIALMaterial and its properties Corian® is a solid, homogenous and massive material (weight 1m2/22kg) with evenly distributed colour and texture in cross-section. This material is exceptionally resistant and durable. It proves very good mechanical properties such as hardness, toughness, abrasion resistance and tenacity. Scratches and nicks can be simply removed by regrinding and repolishing without any change or homogeneity of coloured surface. Corian® cannot be chopped or shattered and it is not fragile, however, it must be braced to prevent any sagging. It is frameless only in case of being glued together into a favourable shape. Depending on application, steel, stainless steel or aluminium profiles, humidityproof MDF boards, plywood or DTD, plasterboard or Perspex boards are used. In kitchen surfaces, frame construction and partial bracing is recommended because of heat removal.

ManufacturingCorian® is produced in form of boards and it is treated in the same way as hardwood (saw, grind, glue, mill), it is also possible to bend and shape it into closed circles and 2D and 3D objects can be created from it. Minimal shaped radius of material 12,3mm thick is 100mm. Warning: darker colours and smaller radius can cause „turning white“.

PatternsBy means of joint technology we can create logos, mosaics and marquetries with diverse colours without any obvious joints between the colours. Corian® can be well combined with wood, glass and metal. With the use of heat, photos, letterings, etc. can be sublimated into the Corian® surface.

TransilluminationBright colour hues in weaker thickness (i.e. 6mm) can be sufficiently transilluminated, which makes the impression of subject’s levitation in the space. Or into the material of thickness 12,3mm we can mill any ornaments, letterings, logos which will come forth and shine thanks to this. Moreover, special set of colours was developed designed particularly for easy transillumination; these colours, marked ICE, enable perfect transillumination across the board.

DilatationFurthermore, different thermal expansion must be expected for Corian® and bracing materials and

constructions, i.e. though surface of any size without joints can be produced, dilatation between Corian® and construction must be provided.

UV radiation resistanceCorian® is colour fast, resistant to sunshine and other climatic influences, so it is possible to use it in exterior as well (frontage facing, banks). Yet long-term influence of acid rains, extremely strong sunshine, thin layer of dust or algae can cause a slight fading out of colours on the surface. These changes however can be prevented if regular maintenance by workers with special equipment is done.

Non-porous surfaceThanks to compact and non-porous material without joints, all liquids remain on the surface, therefore the board is easily cleaned and ideal hygienic conditions are ensured. This enables us to use it in laboratories and hospitals. Also viruses can be cleaned away and radioactive substances can be decontaminated.Nevertheless, take special care with strong acids (concentrated sulphuric acid), ketones (acetone) and chlorinated solvents (chloroform). These can cause a change in surface colour. This can be repaired by regrinding or cutting the damaged part out and gluing a new part in.

Heat resistanceCorian® withstands long-term temperature up to 180˚C, short-term temperature up to 360˚C, depending on the heat source size and thermal variation between the site of heat and surroundings. For example a cigarette which can have more degrees is a very small site and can only cause a very small area turning yellow which can be easily removed by abrasive detergent and a small sponge with Scotch Brite layer.

Fire enduranceMaterial flammability is categorized as B1, which is very important for application into school buildings, hospitals, hotels, airport lounges and railway stations. Corian® is neutral and non-toxic material. Under normal thermal conditions it does not radiate any gases. When on fire, it releases carbonic gases and smoke that is optically bright and does not contain toxins.

Suitable colour hue choiceHues particularly marked in the DuPont™ company colour box are not suitable for extremely stressed surfaces, because these hues contain a large amount of pigment; hence the attrition and abrasion are far more obvious.

Shaped pieces (sinks and washbasins)Beside boards, DuPont™ also produces casted shaped pieces whose outstanding feature is great solidity, endurance and heat resistance which is far more higher than shaped pieces manufactured by gluing and pressing according to individual design.

LifetimeMaterial’s endurance and lifetime is not limited. Guarantee offered by the processor awarded with Quality network certificate from DuPont™ company is 10 years. Company A.M.O.S. DESIGN s.r.o. is a holder of certificates “Quality Network” and ISO 9001. Technical assistance Company A.M.O.S. DESIGN s.r.o. offers full technical assistance to architects and designers in solving projects; we work in the program AUTOCAD.
