Ammunition storage and inspection

Ammunition stored and managing – according national &

international norms (STANAG - AASTP 1- 3),

MoD – M3 and GS Support Command - responsible for

ammunition acceptance in the ammunition storages,

GS Support Command (Ammunition Surveillance Division-

ASD) - responsible for ammo storage, management and

inspection during service life,

ASD has sections for:

- explosive materials managing,

- system ammunition section for managing and testing,

- laboratory testing and coordination civil test capacity.

Future ammunition stockpile in the CAF

• Modern and small armed forces - downsized andrestructured.

• According Long Term Development Plan 2008 - 2015,CAF will have approx. 17.000 tons of all typesammunition,

• Ammunition surplus: approx. 21.000 tons brutto

(non perspective, unserviceable, unstable).

Surplus ammunition groups

• Infantry ammunition (14.5 mm and below): 15 %,

• Mortar bombs (60 – 120 mm): 5 %,

• Cannon, tank and cluster ammunition (20 – 203 mm): 42 %,

• Missiles – MLRS and anti-tank: 15 %,

• Anti-tank mines: 10 %,

• Torpedoes: 1 %,

• Aircraft bombs: 2 %,

• Bulk explosives and propellants, fuzes, warheads: 10 %.

Quantity: 21.000 tons (brutto).

Destruction of obsolete and surplus

EOD personnel (pyrotechnicians) at

the designated location (OBOD).

• destruction capacity / day is around 4,5 t,

• disassembling capacity / year is around 1.000 t,

• destruction capacity / year is around 1.000 t.

USA initiative for destroying surplus of MANPADS with financial and technical support by Government of USA - US Department of State (PM/WRA),

Implementing Arrangement (1 mil US $): MANPADS destruction and improvement of storages physical security – during 2009.,

Destruction surplus of SA-7B MANPADS - 9M32M (929 pcs) – by OBOD technique in Croatia,

Security improvement of army MANPADS storage facility in accordance with NATO standard – with assistance of US DefenseThreat Reduction Agency (DTRA),

The Way Ahead 2009. – 2015.

Ammunition Surveillance – Adoption and implementation of

STANAGs, APs, AASTP1-3, to upgrade safe maintenance of

stockpile,

Transition to NATO and UN classification system of

ammunitions and explosives,

Resolve problem of future ammo stockpile storage – build

new storages at the perspective locations,

Continue to ammunition surplus disposal – sale, donation,

destruction (OBOD, industrial demil) by CAF and commercial

sector capacity with international assistance,

Replacement the old and obsolete ammunition with new

types of ammunition for new combat systems,

Permanent personnel education for ammunition life cycle

management.
