Gun Owners Nationwide Must Rally To Defeat Harry Reid

Help Sharron Angle Defeat Harry Reid.

Gun Owners of America

Washington, DC --(Ammoland.com)- Thank you, everyone, for your

hard work over the last few months. Because of your lobbying efforts, the

NRA has decided NOT TO ENDORSE anti-gun Senate Majority Leader

Harry Reid in his contest against Sharron Angle.

As you may remember, GOA had alerted you last month to press reports

indicating that the NRA might endorse Reid.

Followers of the Wall Street Journal read on July 2 that:

The chief lobbyist for the National Rifle Association made an interesting

admission to The Weekly Standard following a Wednesday report by

RedState.com that the powerful gun lobby might back Senate Majority

Leader Harry Reid in his general election battle against Republican

Sharron Angle.

It’s not that they might endorse Reid – because they might, said chief

lobbyist Chris Cox – but that the issue doesn’t appear to be as much

about the records of Reid and Angle, but rather the specter of a Senate

run by either Democratic Sens. Dick Durbin of Illinois or New York Sen.

Chuck Schumer.

GOA asked you to contact the NRA and to urge them NOT TO ENDORSE

Reid. Well, as of last week, the NRA officially announced that they would

not endorse him!

This is extremely good news, because it makes it more likely that gun

owners in Nevada will now be able to make a more informed decision in

November. Now, if we can just encourage the NRA to take the next step

and endorse the pro-gun Sharron Angle!

Over her eight years in the Nevada legislature, Angle stood 100% in favor

of the Second Amendment, and was a steadfast leader in protecting the

constitutional liberties of all Nevadans. Reid, on the other hand, has

been a steadfast OPPONENT of the right to keep and bear arms, having

earned an F rating from GOA.

• To see Senator Harry Reid’s anti-gun record, please see:

http://gunowners.org/is-harry-reid-pro-gun-or-anti-gun.htm

GOA has been exposing Reid’s record for months, and has even set up a

special section on our website to expose his record. During this time, we

have seen Reid’s numbers drop, while Angle has surged in the polls — in

fact, she overcame what was at one time a 20-point deficit during the

primary to win the nomination in June.

Angle and Reid are now in a dead heat, as the Rasmussen polling firm

shows the two candidates are tied at 47 percent.

ACTION: Please ask the NRA leadership to endorse Sharron Angle in

the Nevada Senate race — as she is an extremely pro-gun advocate.

Encourage your family and friends to contact them as well.

You can call the NRA at (800) 392-VOTE (8683).

EPA Declares It CannotRegulate Traditional AmmoAUG 30, 2010 02:04P.M.

EPA Declares It Cannot Regulate Traditional Ammo

Virginia Shooting Sports Association

Washington, DC --(Ammoland.com)- Last Wednesday, VSSA put out

the call to gun owners to contact the Environmental Protection Agency

(EPA) and urge them to reject a petition submitted by the Center for

Biological Diversity (CBD), asking EPA to ban led fishing sinkers and

lead ammunition.

By Friday, things had changed dramatically.

It was no longer just something being talked about in the firearms media

– the story had been picked up by the mainstream media including US

News and World Report, Investors Business Daily, and The Weekly

Standard.

According to sources close to the firearms industry, the EPA had received

tens of thousands of emails from gun owners and sportsmen and by

Friday afternoon,EPA assistant administrator for the Office of Chemical

Safety and Pollution Prevention, Steve Owens, announced that EPA was

rejecting the petition only two days after opening a comment period

saying: “the agency does not have the legal authority to regulate this

type of product under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).”

But, according to Jim Shepherd of “The Shooting Wire” an online

newsletter, that was not what really had the gun rights community

cheering. It was the clause following that explanation: “…nor is the

agency seeking such authority.”

For shooters and sportsmen, this decision has at least for now laid to rest

the fear that the administration would find a way to move against guns

that didn’t employ what has been demonstrably proven to be the political

suicide in most of the nation-gun bans.

Friday’s announcement however is only one part of what is a very

complex interrelation between individual rights and the outdoors. The

same statement being celebrated as a win for the firearms community

should also serve as a call to action for anglers to continue to

make their voices heard.

“As there are no similar jurisdictional issues relating to the

agency’s authority over fishing sinkers,” the statement reads,

“EPA-as required by law- will continue formally reviewing a

second part of the petition related to lead fishing sinkers.”

If you’re strictly a shooter, Friday’s decision is certainly reason to

celebrate. If, however, you also love to fish, you still need to speak out

against acceptance of any portion of that petition.

The Environmental Protection Agency will continue to accept public

comment on the petition- this time directed specifically to the fishing

tackle issue – until September 15. You can find more information that

can be included in your comments related to fishing sinkers by clicking

here.

Laser Pistols To Replace AirGuns At London 2012 – WTF?AUG 30, 2010 01:56P.M.

Laser Pistols To Replace Air Guns At London 2012 – WTF?

By Lee Min Kok

2010 Youth Olympic Games

London - -(Ammoland.com)- Laser guns have shot their way into the

modern pentathlon competition at the 2012 Olympics.

The technology was showcased at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG),

replacing the standard pellet-firing air pistols for the first time in the

sport’s history.

Said Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM)

president Klaus Schormann: “We will have laser shooting for

the London Games. Based on this new technology, all

countries in the world can compete in our sport.”

Although Dr Schormann declined to give figures, he said that the cost of

shooting would be cut by two-thirds.

He was also adamant that the introduction of laser guns will

herald a new dawn, saying: “We can hold competitions in

parks and even shopping malls. Safety issues will no longer

be a big concern.

“We spoke to a few of the female athletes after their

competition (on Saturday) and not one of them had a bad

thing to say about the guns.”

Said YOG girls’ champion Leydi Laura Moya Lopez of Cuba:

“It’s already easier in a way because it’s lighter.” (ASSN: They

should consider replace the metal in weight lifting with

plastic dumbbells)

It marks the second major change made since the 2008 Beijing

Olympics. The sport had already combined its two final events – running

and shooting – into a single run/shoot finale.

Kim Dae Beom, 18, triumphed in yesterday’s final to become Asia’s first

Olympic medallist in the sport. “I can’t believe this. It is really a gift from

the heavens,” he said, after finishing well ahead of silver medallist Ilya

Shugarov of Russia.

He had trouble getting used to the gun. (ASSN: if he can’t Shoot a Gun

what is he competing for?)

Said the South Korean, who had practised with his new weapon only a

few days before the competition: “The shooting was faster and I got

nervous.”

However, he is also convinced that the future of the sport lies in the laser

guns.

This is total BS and is not true to the sport of shooting,

playing laser tag with targets has nothing to do with

shooting ability and the use of firearms, this is a perfect

example of Political Correctness gone wild at the expense of

shooting sports: USA Shooting should boycott these entire

Olympic games…AmmoLand.com

Open Carry & The Walmart Greeter

By VCDL Member: Frank Mattero

Open Carry & The Wal-Mart Greeter

Virginia Citizens Defense League

Covington VA - -(Ammoland.com)- With all the bad press on carrying

a handgun, I thought that I would relate an incident that happened to me

to balance it out.

About a month ago I was with my wife shopping. We went into our local

WalMart here in Fredericksburg. While she went on into the store I

happened to linger near the entrance checking out the videos for rent. I

habitually open carry (H&K .45) and was doing so that day. I noticed that

the elderly woman greeter was observing me and seemed a little nervous.

She approached me and asked if I was a police officer, to which I replied

that no I was not. She then responded that she did not think that guns

were allowed to be carried in the store.

She said, “I know that you cannot return guns and ammunition” and I

told her that I believed that to be the case, but that open carry as well as

legal concealed carry was not prohibited by Walmart, especially at this

store as I was a frequent shopper here.

She asked me to wait a moment while she went and checked and I told

her that it was not a problem I would wait. A few minutes later she

returned and told me that I was correct and we had short cordial

conversation on why I carry a gun.

As I was about to go into the store and join my wife, she thanked me for

being so understanding and to enjoy my shopping.

Her final comment was “please don’t go berserk while you are here.” I

assured her that I would not. [PVC: I would have asked her to do the

same ]

Deer Breeders Co-Op Joins the American Deer & Wildlife

Alliance

American Deer & Wildlife Alliance

AUSTIN, Texas --(Ammoland.com)- The American Deer & Wildlife

Alliance (ADWA) is pleased to welcome the Deer Breeders Co-Op as its

newest partner in promoting the deer and wildlife industry.

The two organizations will work together to promote the deer industry

and increase youth participation in the outdoors.

“The Deer Breeders Co-Op is one of the fastest growing deer

associations in the country and we are very excited to

welcome them as a new member to the ADWA,” says John

Meng, president of the American Deer & Wildlife Alliance.

“The DBC is extremely family-focused, and they understand

the critical need for all of us to work together to educate our

youth on the importance of land stewardship and wildlife

management. If we fail to instill within our children a sense

of value and understanding in the outdoors, we will fail to

ensure that our hunting and agricultural traditions are

around for future generations. We’re glad to have the DBC’s

support and we look forward to working with them.”

Deer Breeders Co-Op

Founded in 2008, the Deer Breeders Co-Op (DBC) works with

organizations and state wildlife agencies across America to foster better

habitat, hunting regulations and deer conservation programs that lead to

a vibrant and thriving deer industry. In addition, the DBC provides

collective bargaining and greater purchasing power for producers and

professionals working within the deer industry, and their families.

To that end, the DBC constantly works with insurance firms, feed

companies and many other merchants to ensure its members receive the

best possible prices for products and services important to their

businesses. For more information, visit www.DeerBreedersCo-Op.com

“The ADWA has been an outspoken advocate for the deer

industry and youth participation, and we are pleased to

support their efforts,” says Robert Williams, president of the

Deer Breeders Co-Op.

“They have many youth outreach programs, including a

growing FFA initiative that is introducing FFA students and

teachers to deer farming. Our organization is strongly

dedicated to family and we know that our children are the

future of our industry. We must help educate them whenever

and wherever possible, and we’re eager to work side by side

with ADWA to achieve those goals.”

The American Deer & Wildlife Alliance is a non-profit organization

working to promote the deer and wildlife industry and to preserve our

American outdoor traditions. As a part of its public education efforts,

ADWA produces Points Journal, a full-color magazine covering industry

news, wildlife management issues, products and services; Spikes

Magazine, a quarterly youth publication distributed to summer camps

and public libraries across the country; and www.iHuntAmerica.com

website, a comprehensive search engine for hunting ranches, game

preserves and outfitters.

ADWA also sponsors Keith Warren’s Deer & Wildlife Stories, a nationally

broadcast television program on the Pursuit Channel, and the Outdoor

Police Gun Owner Interactions While Carrying Concealed

Covington VA - -(Ammoland.com)- This is the account of the first time

I was pulled over by a LEO while carrying concealed.

I had just finished making a night-drop deposit at the bank of about

$3,000 when I proceeded home around 11:45 pm. I lived in Pulaski

County, VA at the time. I noticed the LEO’s lights in the mirror and

silently rebuffed myself for not having replaced my burned-out

headlight. One very important aspect of an encounter with a LEO,

especially at night, is to start things off properly, so I pulled into a well-lit

public parking area, rolled down my window, turned on my dome light,

turned off my engine and remaining headlight, and kept my hands on the

top of the steering wheel in plain view.

He approached my car and asked me if I knew why he had pulled me

over. I responded that it probably was the headlight I had not replaced as

I had worked overtime that weekend. He said I was correct and asked to

see my license and registration. At that point I politely responded

“Officer, before I do that I want to inform you that I am a CHP holder

and am currently armed with a 9mm on my person.”

I was carrying IWB. He politely asked me if I would open the door from

the outside and step out of the car. Note: never reach back inside the car

if a LEO suspects or knows you are armed. Why add tension to the

situation? I reached through my own window and opened the door from

the outside and stepped out of the car keeping my hands on the very top

of the door in plain view. He asked me where my firearm and wallet

were, and I told him I was carrying IWB in front on the left side and my

wallet was in my left rear pocket.

He asked me to show my firearm so I slowly moved my left hand and

lifted that side of my shirt by grabbing my shirt near the top. Do not lift it

from the bottom as that puts your hand very close to your firearm. The

LEO removed my firearm and placed it on the rear of the car, he also

removed my wallet and handed it to me. I removed my license and CHP

and handed them to him. He took my firearm with him to run my

license. He returned and handed me back my license and CHP which I

put back in my wallet and laid it on top of the car (again, no hands on

the body).

The LEO removed the magazine from my firearm and handed it to me.

He ejected the round that was in the chamber (I carry with one in the

pipe). The round ejected and fell at his feet. I politely asked him if he

would like for me to pick the round up for him and he said he would. I

did so and held it in my hand. He complimented my firearm, as it is one

of the smallest 9mm’s available today, and we continued to chat for

several minutes about its performance, cost, etc.

He was very friendly, and didn’t give me a ticket either. The main thing

that made this a polite encounter rather than a disaster is the fact that I

took most of the stress out of his experience. My step-dad is a retired

Virginia State Police officer, and I have other friends and family that are

or were LEO’s. When a LEO stops a vehicle he or she is literally placing

themselves in the position of being a potential target.

Encounters with LEO’s are not the time to hold a 2-A protest. Most of

them are just doing their jobs and want to go home to their families alive

at the end of the day like the rest of us. In addition, every LEO that I have

asked said that he or she wished law-abiding people carried concealed. If

we understand encounters with LEO’s to be what they are (i.e. somebody

just doing their job) and not what they aren’t (i.e. personal insults or

attacks against us as individuals) we can all go home to our families alive

at the end of the day.

Nebraska Antlerless Deer Hunter Program Connects Hunters

& Land Owners

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission

LINCOLN, Neb. –-(Ammoland.com)- The Nebraska Game and Parks

Commission is using a new online tool designed to increase hunter

access to land where landowners seek more antlerless deer hunters.

The Antlerless Deer Hunter Program allows hunters to register online

and landowners to scan the database for hunters in their area, then

contact them by telephone or e-mail.

This program is available at OutdoorNebraska.org. Click on Hunting,

Programs and then Antlerless Deer Hunter Program to access it, or go

directly to http://outdoornebraska.ne.gov/hunting/programs.asp.

“We hear from many hunters who have difficulty finding land

to hunt,” said Kit Hams, big game program manager with

Game and Parks.

“We also hear from landowners who say hunters only want to

shoot bucks or they do not feel comfortable telling hunters to

shoot does. This program has the potential to address both

problems with a mutually beneficial solution.”

Hunters provide the following when they register: name, address,

telephone number, e-mail address, counties and months in which they

are willing to hunt, preferred weapons, and the number of deer they

want to harvest.

Landowners search the database by county and can see the hunters’ first

name, contact information and hunting preferences (county, month,

weapon).

“With 136 days of deer seasons and 250,000 permits and

bonus tags that allow antlerless deer harvest, we have more

than enough days and permits to control deer herds,” Hams

said. “This is one more tool to help.”

America’s Greatest Gun Dog Men

By Tom Davis

Presented by Bernard+Associates

Twenty years as a Sporting Classics columnist has enabled

the author to share unforgettable moments with some of

America’s greatest dog men.

Sporting Classics Magazine

Columbia, SC --(AmmoLand.com)- Among the milestones that seems

to have flown under the radar of just about everybody is the one marked

by the current issue of Sporting Classics Magazine: my 20th anniversary

as the Gundogs columnist for Sporting Classics.

It was in July/August 1990 that my debut column, a piece on the

renaissance of the hunting cocker spaniel, appeared in these pages, and

while my memory’s a bit hazy, my recollection is that it was originally set

up as a provisional arrangement with the editor – then as now, Chuck

Wechsler – and I agreeing that I’d do it for a few issues and we’d “see

how it goes.”

Well, here we are 20 years later, so I guess it’s gone okay. While Chuck

and I have had our disagreements, as all writers and editors do, I don’t

recall us ever quarrelling about the substance of the Gundogs column.

On the rare occasions he’s tried to nudge me in a certain direction in

terms of content, he’s been able to make a persuasive argument;

otherwise, he’s given me carte blanche to take the column in whatever

direction interests me.

Or, to put it another way, he’s given me all the rope I need to

hang myself.

Just for the record, at this point I also have the distinction (if that’s the

right word) of being the longest-tenured columnist still writing his

original column. Of the five other columnists on the masthead when I

started, two – Shelly Spindel (Answers) and Joe Wilcox (Books) – have

gone to the Great Beyond; two – Cliff Hauptman (Fishing) and Terry

Wieland (Rifles) – no longer write for this magazine; and one, Michael

McIntosh, handed off Shotguns to another writer so that he could launch

a new column, Tales to Tell, and enjoy the freedom to muse upon

whatever floats his boat.

So I’m the Last Man Standing. The safest conclusion to draw from this, I

think, is that I quickly rose to the level of my incompetence and, against

all odds, managed to stay there.

Of course a hell of a lot of water has run beneath the bridge in the past

20 years. When I penned that first column I hadn’t yet met my wife –

and as I write this I’m counting down the days until I escort her beautiful

daughter, freshly graduated from the University of Wisconsin, down the

aisle, where I’ll give her away to a handsome 2nd Lieutenant in the

United States Army, an exemplary young man whose last name,

concidentally, is Davis. Tempis fugit, indeed.

Needless to say, I’ve reaped any number of rewards from writing this

column. It’s opened professional doors, helped get my name on books

like To The Point, The Orvis Book of Dogs, and the entire Why

Dogs Do That series . . . The list goes on.

By far the best part, though, has been the opportunity it’s given me to

meet and spend time with some of the greatest, most accomplished

breeders, trainers and all-around dog men of the 20th century. The

living legends, the Hall-of-Famers and history-makers on whose

shoulders today’s pointer, retriever and spaniel people all stand. To me

they embody a Golden Era, a time when giants strode the earth –

whether they did it on two legs or four.

There’s also this:

Invariably, the older generation of dog men have much better stories to

tell. For example, when Joe DeLoia, the revered professional trainer

from Duluth, delivered the future Hall of Fame Labrador retriever

Massie’s Sassy Boots to the kennel of Frank Hogan in the late-1940s, he

and Hogan got into a dispute over the price that had been quoted for the

dog.

How did they settle it? By shooting a round of skeet!

One of DeLoia’s clients was George Murnane, the head of the august

investment banking firm Lazard-Frères. (This was back when

investment bankers actually cared about making money for their

clients, not just lining their own pockets.)

“Mr. Murnane never dialed a phone in his life,” Joe recalled. “He always

had his secretary do it.”

Early on, Murnane told DeLoia “When you do something for me at my

suggestion or direction, you are my guest portal-to-portal. But

understand this: I don’t want you eating wieners and charging me for

steak.”

Joe repaid this trust by buying a black Lab puppy on Murnane’s behalf

that would become Spirit Lake Duke, a two-time National Retriever

Champion.

Bob Wehle: No one held to a higher standard as a sportsman and a dog

breeder.

Then there was Orin Benson, who made his name as a retriever trainer

(and is in the Retriever Hall of Fame) but could, and did, train literally

any critter he could get his hands on. Bears, otters, wolves, you name it.

One year while he was hunting in Wyoming he took a day off and visited

some of the watering holes in Sheridan – with a cock pheasant perched

on his shoulder like a parrot. He didn’t pay for a drink all day.

At one time Benson had dogs from 31 states in his Wisconsin kennels,

and during the off-season he traveled from Boston to L.A. on the sports

show circuit. A New York sportswriter, awed at one of Benson’s

demonstrations, gushed that his dogs “would bring back anything but a

bald man’s hair.” Hollywood royalty beat a path to Benson’s kennel –

Roy Rogers parked his camper in his driveway – but while he had more

than a little P.T. Barnum in him, there was steak behind the sizzle. His

greatest dog, Black Panther, was for many years the all-time high point

field trial retriever, and his success during the formative era of retriever

field trials (when British trainers dominated the sport) paved the way

for other legendary American-born pros like Cotton Pershall and Charley

Morgan.

No one I’ve met embodied more pointing dog history than Earl Crangle.

He knew James Avent, Hobart Ames and Nash Buckingham; he

competed against the likes of Clyde Morton, Chesley Harris and Jack

Harper. When he was only 22 he won the National Pheasant

Championship with the pointer Tarheelia’s Lucky Strike (who was later

featured on the cover – the cover! – of Life magazine). M.G. Dudley, the

owner of the fireball English setter, Hillbright Susanna, gave Earl a check

with the payee line left blank and told him that if anyone thought their

dog could out-bird “Dot,” he had $1,500 that said they were wrong.

There were never any takers.

The great boxing champion Carmen Basilio was one of Crangle’s best

friends, and when Basilio fought Sugar Ray Robinson at Yankee

Stadium, Earl sat ringside next to Ernest Hemingway and Joe DiMaggio.

At the rematch in Chicago a few months later Earl found himself sitting

next to Leo Durocher and a guy from Hoboken named Sinatra. Earl

trained a hunting dog for Jack Dempsey, and whenever he went into

Dempsey’s restaurant near Madison Square Garden, “The Champ” would

greet him by name and make sure he got the best table in the house.

It was such a thrill to listen to men like these tell their stories.

As someone who’s always felt he was born too late, it was a

window onto an all but vanished world.

I was privileged to watch the great spaniel trainer Dave Lorenz handle a

dog in competition on one of the last occasions he entered a field trial.

He was a hard man to get to talk about his career and his

accomplishments, although they spoke eloquently for themselves: four

National Springer Championships, 15 National placements overall, 23

Field Champions. After my column on Lorenz appeared, I got a letter

from a younger pro who told me that Lorenz – a man he held in awe –

had gone out of his way to help him when he was starting out. That’s the

kind of class Dave Lorenz had.

Still, no one exemplified class, in every word and deed, like Bob Wehle

did. No one hewed to a higher standard as a sportsman and a dog

breeder; no one was more generous to those he considered deserving (or

had less time for flatterers and bullshit artists).

I treasure the time I spent in Bob’s company, walking puppies (while he

flicked his ever-present wing-on-a-string to evaluate their pointing

style and intensity), talking about the past, present and future of Elhew

Kennels, and simply relaxing in the rustic, cottage-style homes he and

his lovely wife, Gatra, shared in Alabama and upstate New York.

There are two honors I’ve received in my lifetime that I’m terribly proud

of. One was being asked by Bob to contribute a Preface to his book

Snakefoot: The Making of a Champion. The other was being asked

by Gatra to speak at Bob’s memorial service. The latter was perhaps the

toughest assignment I’ve ever had –nothing I said could have done

justice to such a man – but I managed to make it through without

breaking down. Then, on the way out (Earl Crangle was with me), we

stopped to say goodbye to Snakefoot, and when the old champion

tottered out of his kennel and pressed his gray muzzle against the wire,

the emotions I’d held in check came out in a flood.

It was the same a couple winters ago when I finally met W.C. Kirk, the

trainer and handler of the dog that burns brighter in my imagination

than any other: Johnny Crockett, the last English setter to win the

National Championship. I’d wanted to meet Mr. Kirk for 40 years – it’s

not stretching things to say he was one of my boyhood heroes – and

when he opened the door of his home outside Bowie, Texas, and greeted

me in his kindly drawl, the words wouldn’t come. I had to turn away, pull

a handkerchief from my pocket, and try to compose myself. My eyes, you

see, had unaccountably filled with tears.

That’s funny: They’re doing it now, too.
