How different might your life be, if you could rest easy knowing that the man or woman you have chosen to spend your life with, is your one true love? That through careful thought and prayer and the blessings of your family, you are truly marrying your lifelong partner? For the Amish, this is just another simple way of life for them. In this special Valentine’s edition of the Amish Heartland, you

will read about the special relationship formed between a young Amish man and a young Amish woman as they begin their courtship. Learn about their modest relationships and the steps they take in preparation for their future together. If you are planning a trip to Amish country this month, consider

taking some time for you and your significant other. Take time to just be you and rekindle a flame that once burned bright before your lives got too busy or just plan a romantic getaway from it all. Consider checking into Donna’s Premier Lodging, and enjoy luxury and comfort and take the time to grow closer to one another. As you’re spending your evenings relaxing in luxury, plan your

days checking out the local shops. What could be more romantic than taking a step back in time and discovering treasures from the past. Take a stroll through the aisles of the Walnut Creek Antique Mall and see a large variety of items from times as old as the 1800s and as new as the 21st century. Plan to travel to the far east end of Amish country and visit a

small shop in Navarre, stock full of the cutest, plush teddy bears around. Top off your romantic getaway by giving one of these huggable teddies to your sweetheart. Don’t fret men, if you’re afraid this store will be to overbearing with loveable cuteness, make your way upstairs to find a small collection of unique antiques to peruse. Whatever your plans are this month, take some time to truly

appreciate, not only the relationship you have with your significant other but everyone else you care about in your life. Also, don’t forget to take care of yourself, for it can be difficult to truly love and care for others when you do not have that respect for yourself.

STORY & PHOTOS BY CATIE NOYES • EDITOR

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and who wouldn’t love to receive a cuddly teddy bear from someone they care most about? Main Street Bears in Navarre offers a wide selection of teddy bears whether you’re looking for a cuddly gift or something to display on a shelf. “Everyone is always in

a good mood when they come in and see all the cute, smiling faces greeting them,” Janet Medure, owner, fondly referred to her teddy bear collection. Shelves line the walls, filled floor to ceiling with plush, fuzzy bears. In 1994 Medure’s husband

purchased the current building at an auction. After a year of remodeling, Main Street Bears and Collectables opened in July of 1996. Everything seemed to fall right into place; Medure was getting the bear shop she always wanted and her husband would be getting his much anticipated antique shop.“Everyone thought I was

crazy at first,” said Medure. After quitting her job as a bank manager, Medure decided she wanted to start her own business. “My husband always wanted to

sell antiques and I always wanted a store to sell my bears.”Medure’s husband would always buy

bears for her as gifts and collectables and soon Medure found herself going along with her husband to buy bears. “It became an adventure to go and find them together,” said Medure.Medure purchases her bears

wholesale from multiple companies but said “mostly they come to me.” She searches online and looks through catalogs to find different collections to sell in her store.

“I’m always looking for new and different bears,” said Medure. “I’m always amazed by the new collections released by different companies.” Medure evaluates her bears down to

the last detail, impressed by the new fabrics used to make the bears and has discovered many companies have developed materials that feels like real fur.Main Street Bears carries several

collector bears such as Boyds Bears, which Medure has found to be the most popular amongst her customers,

the Bearington Collection and Gund Bears. Collectors will find themselves in bear heaven as they take in the wide variety and selection. When asked what her favorite bear

is, Medure finds it very hard to pick a favorite. “It’s like picking a favorite

child. I find something unique in all my bears,” said Medure. “I have to like everything I purchase or I wouldn’t want to sell it in my store.”Valentine’s day is a very popular time

to purchase a bear for a loved one and Main Street Bears has a selection of adorable Valentine’s themed bears to offer. Medure recalls a young man coming into the store and purchasing a bear that he wanted to hide an engagement ring in. Another man came into the shop looking for a bear to surprise his wife with along with a diamond necklace he had purchased for her Valentines gift. Medure helped him to pick out a bear and placed the necklace around the bears neck and carefully wrapped it up for him. It brings a smile to Medure’s face to see these men actually putting forth an effort to make the day special for their sweetheart. The idea of giving the gift of a teddy

bear is highly encouraged by Medure. “Teddy bears will last (longer than chocolate and flowers) and serve as a good memory (from the moment they

8

receive their bear)” said Medure. A bear can be very complimentary to gifts like chocolates and flowers.Scattered among the bears and

on the upper level of the building, is a small variety of antiques. You will find antique chairs and benches as well as cabinets and shelves serving as temporary bear displays. Men fear not; if you’re out strolling the town and shopping with your wife and she feels she must take you into the bear shop to look around, you can find some comfort in knowing old tools and interesting antiques can be found inside as well.Medure explained, her husband

travels to auctions and sales to collect his antiques. Sometimes they will receive phone calls inviting them to pick through a home of a loved one who recently passed away. “We are always looking for different items,” said Medure.Navarre has proven to be a great

city to live in and start a business and Medure has found great support from the community. “Being a small town, we all support each other and look out for each other,” said Medure. Everyone’s business is different and even if they have similar concepts there is always something that makes each one unique. Like any small business, Medure

hopes for her business to continue to do well. Being located along the “back road to Amish Country,” as Medure refers to it, they receive traffic from tourists traveling

down State Route 21 to State Route 62. “We are always looking for new lines of collections and consider customer recommendations,” said Medure. Main Street Bears is located at 225 N.

Main Street, Navarre. Store hours are Wednesday-Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information call 330-879-9655.

Amish CourtshipIt’s about finding the one the Lord

meant for you to spend your life with. Through prayer and His way, young Amish men and women are brought together in the purist of ways. Courtship among young Amish men

and women varies greatly from one Amish community to another. Just like dating practices in the English world, dating in Amish communities has modernized, in some ways, with the times. For example, Amish men and women may not begin dating until their mid to late 20s, whereas, 20 or so years ago, Amish couples would begin their courtship in their early to late teen years.Amish youth typically meet through

hymn singings, volleyball games and

youth only events, said Arlen Miller, a local marketing and communications specialist and previously Amish. Youth also tend to meet frequently at other Amish weddings, said a local, old-order, Amish man (who wished to remain anonymous.)Once they have decided they are

interested in getting to know a certain individual on a deeper level, Amish men and women think through their decision very carefully and may even discuss their decision with their parents. “Young people are encouraged to think their choices over and pray about it,” said the local Amish man. “We don’t encourage past-time

dating” (or dating just for fun,) said

the local Amish man. When Amish youth decide to date, they are planning for their future and are intending to pick a mate to plan their life around. However, if at any point the couple feels they have not made the right choice or it is not “the Lord’s leading,” the couple is encouraged to break it off.Remember in grade school, when

you decided you liked someone but you were too shy to approach the boy or girl in fear of rejection or embarrassment? So you wrote your feelings in a note and secretly slipped it on their desk or you used your best buddy as a go between. Young Amish men will typically follow these same youthful tactics. Amish men typically

use this same approach of writing it out in a letter or using a friend to get a feel if the girl is actually interested, explained the local Amish man.“Very rarely has a young Amish

woman asked for a date of a young Amish man,” said Miller. “It would be an unaccepted approach since the man, after marriage, is expected to be the leader of the home as noted in the Bible. In the same way, the young man is expected to take the lead before marriage.”After long hard thought and prayer,

with both genders consenting to getting to know each other better, dating begins. “Going out is not as much the thing as coming in,” said the local Amish man. Typically the young

man will come to the girl’s home and they may go for a walk or play games with the girl’s family or talk. In the past, dating took place in

secrecy, explained the local Amish man. The young man would visit the girl’s house late in the evening and try to keep their relationship a secret, but the truth would eventually come out. “Now, anymore, the younger generations are much more open about it.”After spending a Sunday afternoon

together, either alone or in the company of the girl’s family, an official date takes place in the evening hours often after returning from youth hymns, explained Miller. During this time the couple will typically sit together sharing Bible readings and prayer and simply talking. The young Amish man will then leave for his home late in the evening typically around 11 p.m. or midnight, explained Miller. It is highly encouraged that young

Amish couples avoid public displays of affection and practice a “hands-off” approach in their relationships. This particular practice is typically common among most orders, while some households may be more lenient. A young Amish couple will

typically date for one to two years (two years being the longer end of the spectrum) before they begin to talk about marriage. At this point it is typically assumed the couple will become wed and no formal proposal is made. It then becomes a matter of discussing whether to plan for a June wedding or October wedding, explained the local Amish man. “In general, the Amish youths,

especially young ladies, are shy among members of the opposite gender showing deference and respect, not wanting to be forward,” said Miller.

The bedroom is one of the most important rooms to consider when it comes to decorating. Your bedroom is your oasis. Not only should it be a place of rest, but a place to escape and relax. You should feel comfortable in your room. You should be able to reach a state of peace and rejuvenation in your room. All these things should be taken into consideration when picking furniture and designing your personal space. It’s important to have a plan before

you begin any type of major re-design project. Think about the color schemes and design patterns before you start covering your walls in paint and wallpaper. Colors- This is your opportunity to

show off who you are. Your color choices can reflect your personality but can also affect your mood. If you are looking for a calm, serene, oasis, consider using blues, grays and greens;

cool colors. Maybe you have a darker space and your looking to brighten up the room with reds, yellows or pinks; warm colors. Furniture- It is important to keep

in mind exactly how much space you have to work with. This may sound like common knowledge, but taking exact measurements and laying out a floor plan can save you the hassle of having to return furniture that didn’t end up fitting as planned. Accessories- A throw pillow here, a

table lamp there; accessories can really show of your sense of style and complete your image. Not only does the bedside lamp provide another source of light, but it could make a decorative statement. Make it Functional-You can never go

wrong with extra storage space. Consider a bed that sits high off the floor making it easy to stow away storage bins or purchase a bed with storage units built in. End of the bed storage units can double as a decorative chest or bench. Think vertically; construct shelving units above doors or high up on walls and store items that do not need to be regularly accessed. The key is to make your room a place

you will feel most comfortable in. Plan a trip to a furniture store and view bedroom set-ups presented to you right in the store. Whatever you’re looking for, the friendly staff at each of the Furniture Heartland stores will be more than happy to offer their expertise in finding furniture and accessories to fit your style.

Walnut Creek Antiques

Antique malls are a treasure trove just waiting to be discovered. Some people enter with a purpose, looking for the rarest of the rare, searching for specific tools or antique dishes. Others venture in for the experience, to walk down the aisles and take in the history of it all, wondering if their grandparents or even great grandparents used these tools in their everyday lives.Just off the beaten path (or state route 39 depending on how

you look at it) sits Walnut Creek Antique Mall. 15 years ago, LeRoy Raber found himself unable to continue in his previous line of work due to back health issues. He was asked to manage a small antique shop in a building that once housed the Mast Harness Shop. Although Raber had never considered this line of work, he soon

found that he very much enjoyed it. “I was asked to manage the antique mall 15 years ago and I never looked back,” said Raber.

While Raber said he appreciates these more “younger generation antiques,” he still enjoys the primitive rare find that may show up in his store. “To me it (antiques in the 1950-1960 group) doesn’t hold much value, but it brings in the younger crowd,” said Raber. It’s exciting for Raber to see the younger generation sharing interest in the antique world.“I don’t want this to be a museum,”

said Raber. He likes to see his

“It got in my blood and I ended up really liking it.”It’s amazing just how many

treasures can be found in 11,000 square feet of space. Different vendors rent out spaces in the store in order to showcase their merchandise. While some vendors are just looking to get rid of great grandpa’s tool collection that has been cluttering up the barn, other vendors are looking to make a living off of the unique items they have to offer.“We offer a large variety of

antiques which contributes to our success,” said Raber. “So many people come through with different tastes; everyone’s looking for different items.”Walking through the store,

customers will see antique items from the early 1800s all the way up to the 1950s and 1960s and up. “I enjoy seeing the old primitives (from the early 1800s,)” said Raber. “But I think we are starting to see a generation gap with the younger generation interested in what our parents and grandparents had (items from the 1950s and 1960s,)” said Raber.

inventory continue to move and grow with new vendors. Items tend to go in cycles, explained Raber. An item that was very popular one year and seems to be wanted by everyone may not be as interesting the next year, but may become of interest again a few years down the road. Raber said, one of the most

interesting items he had in his shop was a piece of carnival glass made in Millersburg. It sold for $18,000.Walnut Creek Antiques has kept in

good standings with the community. “We have lots of repeat customers and we have great business all year round,” said Raber. Last year’s mild winter kept customers steadily coming in the door even in January and February which are typically slower months for Amish Country shops.

“It’s exciting to see what the future is bringing,” said Raber. “We are quite fortunate to have a shop full and have a waiting list for vendors.” Walnut Creek Antique Mall is

located at 4872 McKinley Place Dr., Walnut Creek. Store hours are Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information call 330-893-4010.

Picture yourself walking across the threshold of a quaint little cottage hand-in-hand with your

sweetheart. Upon entering, candlelight fills the room as candles are placed strategically on countertops and end tables to cast the perfect glow around the room. A bucket of champagne on ice sits welcomingly on the nearest table. As the two of you pour yourselves

a glass, you take in the surroundings of the beautiful cottage and make yourself comfortable. Tucked in the corner of the room is a small heart shaped Jacuzzi for two, surrounded by candles and rose petals. The fireplace flickers along the far wall and emits a soft, warm glow as you cuddle up close to your significant other on the couch. You feel totally secluded from the busy city just outside your window.

We do anything we can to make a couple grow closer together

Donna’s Premier Lodginga cozy retreat for two

AMISH HEARTLAND 37

Storefront after storefront grace the south edge of State Route 39 as it passes through the heart of Berlin. People bounce from door to door with shopping bags filled to the brim with goodies they have purchased and vehicles constantly buzz up and down the busy street. It’s hard to imagine that just behind this row of businesses, awaits peaceful cottages, villas and suites all ready to host the most romantic of getaways for any couple. When Donna Marie Schlabach

bought the land for Donna’s Premier Lodging, she planned on turning the buildings into a rental property of sorts, explained Nicole Hershberger, employee at Donna’s. As she thought on her business venture some more, she began to envision a romantic bed and breakfast feel for her cottages and villas. 20 years ago, Donna Marie took pride

in being one of the only lodges in the area. While much has changed since

then, and many other lodges have been incorporated into the area, Donna Marie’s care for her guests has kept her going strong.Donna’s Premier Lodging focuses

mainly on couples and being a perfect romantic getaway. Every room has a couples Jacuzzi and fireplace setting, both perfect for sharing a glass of champagne and the company of a significant other. Newly married couples can take

advantage of honeymoon suites and accommodations. Couples can also take advantage of anniversary packages or just a nice get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Rooms can be customized to fit

every couples needs and make their stay magical. Each room is prepared with candles and rose petals to set a romantic scene. Champagne and chocolate covered strawberries can be ordered and prepared upon arrival and after awaking from a peaceful slumber

38

a hot meal can be prepared for guests right in their room.Friendly staff at Donna’s will work

with you to create the ultimate dream getaway package. “We often have men call in and say ‘I’m looking to surprise my wife,’ and we work with them to customize a package that works for them,” said Hershberger. Donna’s set-up is the perfect scene for

wedding proposals. After receiving a call from a man who wanted to create a night his girlfriend would never forget, the staff got right to work prepping their room for the big night. “We lit candles and had a special CD playing the groom-to-be had requested,” said Hershberger. For the month of February, Donna’s

provides Valentines packages for couples. The “Prelude to Romance” package includes a one night stay in a cedar cabin, chalet or villa. Couples receive a box of chocolate covered strawberries or a sweetheart cake, a

complimentary bottle of champagne and a Romance Breakfast will be served directly to your room in the morning. Rose petals and candles are placed around the Jacuzzi and and more rose petals are sprinkled on the bed to complete the romantic ambiance. Another special package for February

is the “Romantic Sensations” package which includes a one night stay in a cottage, bridal suite or sauna suite. The Romantic Sensations card game and 7 Steps to a Perfect Night of Passion make this package perfect for growing closer to your partner and getting to know them on a deeper more romantic level. Heart shaped petals and candles are placed around the Jacuzzi and bed in this package as well, and a bottle of strawberry champagne is provided. The “Chocolate and Peppermint

wine. Couples can also enjoy the freshly fallen snow on a romantic sleigh ride or carriage ride for two. “We do anything we can to make

a couple grow closer together,” said Hershberger. “Relationships can be hard and it’s important to take the time to strengthen it and grow closer together.” All together Donna’s provides 17

accommodations. Cottages, villa’s and suites sit on roughly three acres within walking distance to downtown Berlin. cedar cabins and chalets are just a mile from town tucked back in six acres of wooded seclusion. Hershberger said, while the lodging

is mostly geared towards couples, she is working on developing packages for the solo traveler. Often times you just need to get away and allow some time for yourself; you need some downtime. “Who doesn’t like a warm bubble bath or kicking back to read a good book in front of a fire?” said Hershberger.Donna’s is always looking for ways to

improve their guests stay. “We are open

to calls, if someone says we want ‘x,y,z’ we look into it,” said Hershberger. So drop the kids off at grandmas for

the weekend and take some time to rekindle an old fire. Bring passion back into a relationship or just take time to grow closer to the one you love. Don’t just wait for a birthday or anniversary as an excuse, plan a spontaneous get away to surprise your sweetheart or make this Valentine’s day the best one yet.Donna’s Premier Lodging is located
