September 14-15, 2010

The Hilton City Avenue, Philadelphia, PA, USA

Even in the economic downturn, the medical device manufacturing industry has maintained margins by taking measures to become as cost-effective as possible. Health care is continuing to improve quality of life with new devices.

Overall, the market is expected to continue growing with the aging population and increased life expectancy, and expanding markets in developing countries. Areas for expansion include home-use medical devices as patients expect to have more control and more easily operated equipment. This places heavy demands on designers, trying to make accessible technology with good safety features.

Innovations in medical procedures are giving rise to new medical devices with high level performance. Neurology is a key area for research to tackle brain and spinal cord injuries and restore patient functions. Cardiology is a key area for device use from catheters and stents to pacemakers and even artificial heart tissue. Joint replacements in orthopedics and tissue matrices are other examples of medical implants.

Many medical devices incorporate polymers, either as key components or as coatings to improve the biocompatibility of other materials. Polymers are relatively easy and cheap to manufacture, and in medicine they must also withstand sterilization procedures. Many devices require different properties such as stability of a stent combined with slow drug release to combat infections. Antimicrobials can also be added to the plastic to limit bacterial growth and silver ions have a key role here. All components of a device must pass extensive testing to minimize risk to the patient.

Medical Grade Polymers 2010 provides an expert forum for device designers, OEMs, manufacturers, researchers and suppliers to the industry. It is a unique place to hear about the latest technology and material trends and to debate important issues with top professionals.
