Contents Letter from the art director

Hi!You might not know me yet, but one day you will. My name is Amina

Parker and I am an aspiring art director. I am currently in my second

year at Vega, The Brand Communications School. I chose ot specialise

in a subject called Visual Communication because it was what ap-

pealed to me most. It might sound cheesy but I am passionate about

design and at the same time fashion. I decided that in order ot get

these two to work together, my aim is to one day work for a fashion

magazine as their art director. Feel free to look through my portfolio and

For this assignment, I was required to find a business with a logo that was not working for them and create a new one that was better suited for them. I was then required to design a business card, letter head, fax sheet and complement slip.

Osmans Foods is a catering company that specialises in Indi-an cuisine. I manipulated a fork and added dome elements from the buildings you see in India. For the business card and compliment slip, I made use of the recipe cardshape and look.

During Brand Challenge, we first had to create a personal brand image and

this is the branding we chose for ourselves. My group members were Natalie

Kirkwood, Ludumo Toni, Robyn Britz, Leah Wicks, Cheryl Dube, Ryan Wolters and

myself. We were given the task of doing a campaign for the Japanese brand

Sansui. We proposed they target students and make them feel as if they are

secret genuises and Sansui is the simple solution in their lives.

The concept behind my cookbook is inspired by hipster style. It mocks the fact that hipsters are vegan even though they wear designer clothes and smoke cigarettes. I chose to use illustrations that depicted the hipster lifestyle with very neutral colours as backgrounds. I went for a very simple look and feel for my book. A lot of my concept and quirki-ness is seen in my text. To add an inter-active feel to my cookbook, the helpful cut outs section is perforated.

blend in a blender until it’s all liquid

pour into ice cube trays, let freeze

put the ice cubes back into the blender,

add in juice from 1/2 a lemon and the zest of 1/2

an orange.

blend with water/watermelon juice to keep things

moving.

blend until everything is smooth.

Strawberry green tea lemonade

Throw everything in your bender like you don’t care.

Because you probably don’t.

two handfuls frozen strawberries the juice of 1/2 a lemon

1 tbsp agave, or 2 tsp raw sugar

1/2 cup water + 2 tsp green tea matcha powder

OR 1/2 cup chilled brewed green tea

Vanilla Glazed Carrots

• S T A R T E R S •

Peel and dice a sweet potato. Toss in some olive oil and sea salt. Place in a baking sheet,

bake at 450f for 30-40 minutes, or until they start to brown on the edges. Sprinkle

a little bit of brown sugar over them and stir. Pour out any excess oil. Bake for another 5-10

minutes.

Scrub any number of carrots and cut

off the ends. Prep about 4-5 carrots per person

you’re going to serve. Place them in a baking pan.

Make a mixture of olive oil, a little brown sugar, and a splash of vanilla extract.

Drizzle over the carrots until they’re Adequately coated.

Sprinkle coarse sea salt on them as well.Bake at 375f for 30-40 minutes or until very

tender.

Wash and cut a half pound of potatoes.

You can cut them to however small your preference.

Boil potatoes until tender in the centers. Drain them and let them cool a little.

Add them to this mixture: 1/2 cup vegan cream cheese, 2 tbsp nayonnaise, 1/4 cup finely chopped celery & carrot, 1 tbsp dried cranberries, 2 tbsp sunflower seeds, 1 tbsp

nutritional yeast, a squeeze of spicy mustard and 1 long squeeze of lemon. Add salt to

taste.Stir until everything is mixed together

and there are no big chunks of cream cheese left.

I chose to do a direct mailer to try and get corporations to donate funds so that communities could start their own food gardens. I played with the fact that we do not realize how privileged we are and how we take things for granted. I also looked at not seeing things that are right in front of us. When the person receives their direc-tion mailer, they would see a black and white box with a little story on it. The story tells them nothing about the corporation. It just tries to get them thinking. The story is my call to action in a way. Once the box is opened, they are then exposed to the Trees and Food for Africa logo. Inside the box is a plan black mug with no mes-sage on it. Instead there is a leaflet that tells them to make a cup of tea or coffee and to contemplate. The mug is colour changing and once hot liquid is poured in, it will change to white with a black message.
