Any candidate should be aware that she or he will have to be extremely self-reliant and open to the local culture, as candidates are sought to work in the capital, Muscat, but also in other regional cities in the country (Nizwa, Sohar, and Salalah). This offers different opportunities and challenges. Living outside the capital, for example, would give someone seeking to improve their Arabic and learn about Omani culture a real advantage. Interns may be expected to attend occasional meetings in Muscat, which will be scheduled so as not to conflict with teaching duties. Air fare will be reimbursed for the intern traveling from Salalah for these meetings. Candidates should also expect occasional field visits from AMIDEAST staff for quality assurance. Interns will have a local point of contact in the Ministry of Education at the school(s) where they will teach and AMIDEAST will further provide contacts of other local or expatriate community members as available to assist in chaperoning planned events and enhancement activities. AMIDEAST is looking for individuals who have skills, interests and experiences that indicate they would work well in different cultures, and applicants should be able to demonstrate that they work well both as part of a team and independently. An ability to adhere to school and community protocols is also a pre-requisite. Working knowledge of Arabic will be helpful, but is not required.
